FOREWORD They put us ships upon the sea, with strong tides, strong winds, and a strong will--and when our anchors dropped at last, our journey was complete. This expresses our thoughts and endearments which we leave to our faculty by the '59 edition of ''Chapel Memories. ' This is our thanks for the numerous times they have taken us under their billowing white sails and set us upon the course of right and love with their compasses; for the many times they have secured their guide ropes to our masts and kept us from toppling on the wind- tossed sea of life; for their ever-faithful and reliable hand at the helm, during our journey, which has steered us on the proper courses, Yes, truly this is our thanks to our mold lofts andthe builders who shaped us, by their hands, into a great fleet of ships. We know that with our ships of love and knowledge, we can conquer the world. Raymond Ward MR. OTUS C. THOMAS, Principal As Captain of the ''Good Ship Chapel , he has shown us a true picture of service to man- kind through his help, encouragement, and example of daily living. He has contributed so much to our adventure on the ' 'Sea of Education , for which we are very grateful. SCHOOL BOARD To our Superintendent, the Randolph County Board of Education and the Grays Chapel District Committee, we, the students and faculty of Grays Chapel High School, wish to express our sincere appreciation for your leadership, devotion, and work for our school and our community. Through your interest and time, our school has grown and will continue to grow in the future. You have given us greater opportunities for learning and teaching. May our contribution to our school, community and world follow the course you have set for us and we shall strive to be worthy citizens and steer others to high ideals and faith. Mr. W. J. GLASS OR Oe Ever our thoughts will always turn to Classmates, we will soon be parting Our days at Chapel High. From faces grown so dear. Ever in dreams we will remember, But never will we cease to love them, And recall them with a sigh. Though we be far or near. But as we bravely face the future, And as we go to face tomorrow, Leaving things we loved behind; Leaving friends we loved behind; We will always remember Our Class of '59. We will always remember Our Class of '59. Lynda Wright 36 CLASS HISTORY In the year 1947, we, the Seniors, started to work on the Sea of Education . We loved rowing our small boats up the channel and spent many hours on watch learning about the seas beyond. With the guidance of our helpful officers, we learn- ed to navigate and set our sites toward new horizons. We were delighted on the days when our head officers would let us leave our boats and under their guidance hike to the surrounding islands. At last, in 1955, we had the knowledge necessary to leave our small boats and become ' 'Freshmen on a Ship that sailed larger and deeper seas. At first this ship was strange, and we knew not when or how to get on deck. Under the guidance of our great Captain, Mr. Otus Thomas, we soon learned our duties and our way around on board ship. And now the long awaited day has come. We are now ''Senior-Crewmen , and as we leave our present ship for a still larger ship on which many of us will spend the rest of our lives, we hope that the future seas will be calm. We are proud of our ship and of our crew's record, but as we Set sail on still deeper seas, we know that we shall never forget our days spent together on this ship and on the great ''Sea of Education .
