ERNEST L. BORTNER MR. ERNEST L. BORTNER a wel ter We, the Beta Club, dedicate this, our 1955 “Chapel Memories” to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L. Bortner, whose interest in the activities of the school is shown by their hard work and encouragement to others. [3] Foreword It has been said that with a key, a pencil, a ballot and the Bible that society can establish a civilization of vision and promise. We hope that this year’s edition of “Chapel Memories” will make you aware of the many keys awaiting your use to develop each individual into a mature “Keeper of the Keys.” Keys have been identified as instruments for the operation of locks or as a solution to a problem. We have found keys, in both instances, applicable to our school life. The faculty has handed to us the major key to success by teaching and inspiring us to attain that which we desire. They have extended to us the keys of knowledge, that will interpret and deal with the situations found behind all locks. May the years give us the strength to choose the actions, the thoughts and the beliefs that educate, serve and create. [4] FACULTY MRS. KATHLEEN B. Thomas. Students in the school and patrons of the community collected a total of $880. This far exceeds the 1954 collection of $638.30, said Principal Thomas. A check for the above amount has been sent to Dimes Director Earl Hucks. Mrs. Bruce Pugh and Ernest Bortner were co-chairmen for the drive. Mr. Bortner planned the activities with the students and Mrs. Pugh the activities in the community. Activities sponsored included square dances, ball games, and movies. The students, teachers, and mothers sold the following things during the drive: cakes, candy, pop corn, peanuts, French fries, coffee and hot chocolate. Mrs, Pugh’s elementary class brought in $60, while Mr. Bortner’s 11th grade was tops in high school with a total of $153.25. In his report on the drive Mr. Thomas said he wished to express his appreciation to students, teachers, and patrons for helping to make the March of Dimes such a wonderful success.
