Mr. Otus C. Thomas, the caretaker, and his faculty gardeners have lovingly supervised its growth from the tiniest bud to the full-blown rose. Our class flower, the rose, symbolizes our class spirit and personality. As the poet has said: “Across the shining road of time, A fragrant flower chart, God sent a rose for every clime, A rose for every heart.” The gift of courage for achievement, and the hope for peace and service to our fellowmen that we have cultivated and learned to encourage in our school years will be our tribute to the challenge of one who: “When blossoms flower’d mid the snow, Upon a winter night, was born the child, The Christmas Rose, The King of love and light.” ERULDY yee pose Pan incete the EYQ, The theme of Our year book, Te Rose, por trays the sperrt of our principal gardener My. This preparation began with approximately thirty students, of which only sixteen remain. As miniature plants we needed the guidance, understanding and assistance which have been offered us by our parents and teachers during our twelve years in school. In the first grade we were guided through the A, B, C’s by Mrs. Allen, and in the second Miss Straughn helped our roots grow deeper and stronger. The third was somewhat noisy because we were stars of a rhythm band, under the direction of Mrs. Swaim. Our fourth year was highlighted by the making of pot holders for our mothers and raising potted plants to sell for the March of Dimes. Our willing helper here was Mrs. Elkins. By the time we entered the fifth grade, we were developing rapidly into fine young stems upon which many new shoots were being added from neighboring communities. We were blessed by having Miss Buie as our teacher who shared our enthusiasm in art work and proceeded along with us into the sixth grade. Our seventh year might be described as the most adventurous because of the many hikes we enjoyed. Sharing them with us was Mr. Cliff Thomas. In the eighth grade Mrs. Bruce Pugh traveled with us to the neighboring schools for the Junior League basketball games. Our girls walked off with the championship honors that year. After the many years of preparation and growth we entered high school in nineteen hundred and fifty-one as fresh shining buds. As Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors we enjoyed many activities such as parties, banquets, Glee Club, and sports. Now as Seniors we have grown from buds to full-blown roses. Our school years have given us many cherished memories that will remain in our hearts forever. JETTIE JO ALLRED, Historian 26 MILJOOI Us (ROSIE ELLIS” 27 CLASS POEM “The Garden of Tomorrow” waits for us, the Class of ‘54. Life holds for each of us joy and sorrow in store. We may wander far before we find our place in life, Through years of wondrous peace and possibly years of strife, But somewhere there’s a niche for each of us to fill. God will help us find our way around some distant hill. We'll journey on in life reaching upward for the sun, Someday to find our niche and glory in a job well done. —LOUISE PUGH 28 fife zs the roses hope while yet unblown __ eats ae Se Oe Se HeDr ae 29 JUNIORS Bobby Nelson Jane Pugh Betty Reeder Jean Hall Carl Walker Louise Allred Rabon Thomas Lou Etta Williams Clara Shelton Jesse Williams Stella Smith 30 JUNIORS Shelby Routh Cecil Cox Robert Carter Mary Barbre Harry Nixon Ruby Presnell Paul Whitaker Louise Poole Margaret Wiles Allen Brown Patricia Wright 31 JUNIORS Margaret Cox Tommy Hunt Ray Williams Martha Cox Margaret Ellis Iris Williams Phillips Fagg Linda Bunting Elsie Lineberry Ralph Groce Delette Williams nays CFazrel Nigh School OUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE MARCH OF DIMES Mrs. Redding’s first grade. : i. ees Miss Buie’s first and second grades _........-.. __..-___...._ - ee a Miss Florence Baldwin’s second and third grades : = Mrs. Bortner’s third and fourth grades = ak Me eee Coley F Mrs Bikinis fourth: race eee 5 es! ee ee MrssePuch saritthe crade serene ee ha ee 1 oe oe eee Missi Swanarbaldwin7s fiitheatidesixthy otades; 2. 2 ee Mr. York’s sixth and seventh grades sae es WMiree Maus@sevenmtn oface yee sae a eee eee co 2 Re sn Mra Cliffe nomas serchth sotade ameeee ee es te ee ee ee Ninth grade _ At eee S} peomen eee et ee Tenth grade _ Fae Ret ee es ee ; Eleventh grade _. ere “4 Twelfth grade pe RRR EM pete RES ) G SOPHOM Carletta York Thomas Cross Marian Glasgow Varner Letha Pugh Tackie Alfred Dunn Serttred spr B ° : = 3 uu as Yr Se fem | ao jem fed 2 iss} Ae, a Ss B 4 © vg q 5 Ss a a} — iS) a x Dorothy Pugh Russell Smith 34 PHOMORES O S Barbara Fields Ralph Kirkman Henrietta Johnson Larry Fagg Betty McMasters Charles Davis Mary Routh Jimmy Jenkins Joyce Routh Donald Lineberry Peggy Kirkman Vernace Pugh 35 SOPHOMORES Johnny Ester Retha Reeder Virgil Reeder Louise Thomas Gene Walton Doris Whitaker se vee reer ee atin Junior Cross Donnaire Pennington Ned Caudle Not pictured—Eugene Amick 36 FRESHMEN ath father YE OSC LGG art Le Ye MAY ’ Herrick CAASE Offece tS at Folt Hea at 37 Janice Pugh Harold Hurley Alice Williams Bobby Routh FRESHMEN Tommy Poole ‘Joan Routh Gary Lineberry 38 Donald Hughes Virginia Routh John Lineberry Irene Wicker J.
