I would like to take this page and give thanks to a few people. Lori Gust, Joanna Myers and Sherri Jensen, who helped put the yearbook together. Lori and Joanna worked during their 7th hour study hall. Sherri typed many things for Boss and I. Linda Lobsinger and Kathy Lovely who put up with a lot of guff from me running the hallways to get stuff for the yearbook. The teachers who also put up with a lot of bother. Could I please have a write up for this by--------? l'hese write ups helped a lot putting the book together. I would like to thank Boss for his help. Basically for everything. I could never find the right words. lo my fellow classmates of '87 I would like to extend CONGRATS This was a fun class to be with. lo the Classes '38, '89 and '90, best of luck. YEARBOOK STAFF William Bonkowski Katie linker Yearbook Advisor Student Editor Business Manager Saga 1987 is a chronicle of the events which made the 1986 - 1987 year at G.H.S. special for all of us. Producing such a memoir, or diary, is difficult under the best of circumstances as including every event and person deserving of recognition is impossible, lhis dilemma of selecting appropriatly, coupled with inadequate staffing and dependancy on others to provide write ups, photo schedules and photos prior to printer deadlines made the challenge of delivering this yearbook strenuous to say the least. Meeting this challenge, and doing so virtually alone, was your Student Editor, Katie linker. For her dedication and performance above and beyond , and for her unfaltering committment to serve her fellow students and this advisor, she has earned my deepest gratitude and respect. Special thanks also go to Lori Gust, who contributed generously of her time and talent when it appeared this book would not meet deadline. Joining Lori, were Sherri Jensen and Joanna Myers, who typed feverishly at the 11th hour to provide the captions and script necessary to tie Saga 1987 together. I can't thank them enough. Finally, and this is last but not least , I salute each and every student of G.H.S. for providing a year of notable accomplishments, worthwhile activities and just plain fun, all of which has made recording the passage of this year a worthwhile and personally fulfilling experience for Boss . YEARBOOK DEDICATION Mr. Weiland wife Beth (right) daughter Jeannette On May 9, 1987, the Saga Yearbook was dedicated to Mr. Weiland at a luncheon held at the Grayling Holiday Inn. Mr. Weiland started teaching in Grayling in the fall of 1965, Teaching Biology and Science. He was the head football coach for 12 years and in that time he won 3 League Champion- ships. As an assistant track coach he had one league championship to his credit. Mike has been coaching skiing for 21 years and in that time his teams have won 8 League Championships and one regional championship; also 2 of his skiers went on to win the state ski championship (individuals). His involvement in community projects over the years has kept him busy. He has coordinated the Blood Banks at the high school for the last 12 years and is on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross. Mike also sits on the Grayling Recreation Authority Board which is responsible for the management of Hanson Hills. Mike Weiland has devoted over 21 years to his profession and as many to his community and is a credit to both. His concern for his students as a teacher and a coach has helped many to go on to further their education. His willingness to take the time to work with them and advise them has shown that his concern for his students is uppermost in his mind. He carries the same enthusiasim into his community work and they too benefit from his concern and hard work. Veacher+Coach+Citizen+Friend - Dedication committment, responsibility and Mike Weiland has not only met this criteria, but surpassed it. The 1987 Saga Yearbook is proud and honored to have this years book dedicated to Mr. Mike Weiland. 6
