Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1987 volume:

1987 1 he Class of 87 has worked hard over the last four years at Grayling High School. As incoming wide eyed freshmen they set high goals for themselves, and as out going seniors they have maintained many of their goals. In a graduating class of 113 seniors, A6 or about A0% have been accepted and plan to attend a four year college or university next year. The majority of the A6 seniors will be attending the major colleges and universities throughout Michigan and two seniors will be attending schools out of state in Evanston, Illinois and Notre Game, Indiana. Iwenty two seniors have enrolled in community colleges and business schools throughout the state. Another 13 students are planning on continuing their training and education in the armed services for a total of 81 students or 70% of the graduating class is going on for post secondary training. The seniors not going on for post secondary training have secured employment in our community or other communities or at this time have not made a final decision on their career plans. lhe Class of 87 should be proud of their accomplishments and this is why Grayling High is A MICHIGAN EXEMPLARY SCHOOL. 1 -ft ' DEDICATION.................................6 STUDENT LIFE...............................8 HOMECOMING................................10 SENIORS...................................16 JUNIORS...................................30 SOPHOMORES................................35 FRESHMEN................................. ,0 Girls Basketball....................50 Volleyball..........................5A Boys Basketball.....................58 Wrestling...........................62 Girls Ski...........................6A Boys Ski............................66 1 rack..............................68 Baseball............................70 Cheerleaders........................72 Honors..............................7A ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES................76 Advanced Studies....................77 Building Trades.....................78 National Honors Society.............80 Forensics...........................82 Youth In Government.................8A Student -Council,...................85 Alumni..............................86 Bloodmobile.........................87 Musical.............................88 Play................................90 Band................................91 BAND......................................91 CANDIDS...................................96 WHO'S WHO?...............................10A TEACHERS.................................105 HONORS NIGHT............................. |H PROM.....................................112 BACCALAUREATE............................116 CLASS NIGHT..............................118 COMMENCEMENT.............................120 SENIOR SIGNATURES........................122 AUTOGRAPHS..............................12 t YEARBOOK STAFF William Bonkowski Katie linker Yearbook Advisor Student Editor Business Manager Saga 1987 is a chronicle of the events which made the 1986 - 1987 year at G.H.S. special for all of us. Producing such a memoir, or diary, is difficult under the best of circumstances as including every event and person deserving of recognition is impossible, lhis dilemma of selecting appropriatly, coupled with inadequate staffing and dependancy on others to provide write ups, photo schedules and photos prior to printer deadlines made the challenge of delivering this yearbook strenuous to say the least. Meeting this challenge, and doing so virtually alone, was your Student Editor, Katie linker. For her dedication and performance above and beyond , and for her unfaltering committment to serve her fellow students and this advisor, she has earned my deepest gratitude and respect. Special thanks also go to Lori Gust, who contributed generously of her time and talent when it appeared this book would not meet deadline. Joining Lori, were Sherri Jensen and Joanna Myers, who typed feverishly at the 11th hour to provide the captions and script necessary to tie Saga 1987 together. I can't thank them enough. Finally, and this is last but not least , I salute each and every student of G.H.S. for providing a year of notable accomplishments, worthwhile activities and just plain fun, all of which has made recording the passage of this year a worthwhile and personally fulfilling experience for Boss . Sincerely, William J. Bonkowski, Jr. Yearbook Advisor I would like to take this page and give thanks to a few people. Lori Gust, Joanna Myers and Sherri Jensen, who helped put the yearbook together. Lori and Joanna worked during their 7th hour study hall. Sherri typed many things for Boss and I. Linda Lobsinger and Kathy Lovely who put up with a lot of guff from me running the hallways to get stuff for the yearbook. The teachers who also put up with a lot of bother. Could I please have a write up for this by--------? l'hese write ups helped a lot putting the book together. I would like to thank Boss for his help. Basically for everything. I could never find the right words. lo my fellow classmates of '87 I would like to extend CONGRATS This was a fun class to be with. lo the Classes '38, '89 and '90, best of luck. Katie linker Student Sditor Business Manager 1937 Sag? Yearbook YEARBOOK DEDICATION Mr. Weiland wife Beth (right) daughter Jeannette On May 9, 1987, the Saga Yearbook was dedicated to Mr. Weiland at a luncheon held at the Grayling Holiday Inn. Mr. Weiland started teaching in Grayling in the fall of 1965, Teaching Biology and Science. He was the head football coach for 12 years and in that time he won 3 League Champion- ships. As an assistant track coach he had one league championship to his credit. Mike has been coaching skiing for 21 years and in that time his teams have won 8 League Championships and one regional championship; also 2 of his skiers went on to win the state ski championship (individuals). His involvement in community projects over the years has kept him busy. He has coordinated the Blood Banks at the high school for the last 12 years and is on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross. Mike also sits on the Grayling Recreation Authority Board which is responsible for the management of Hanson Hills. Mike Weiland has devoted over 21 years to his profession and as many to his community and is a credit to both. His concern for his students as a teacher and a coach has helped many to go on to further their education. His willingness to take the time to work with them and advise them has shown that his concern for his students is uppermost in his mind. He carries the same enthusiasim into his community work and they too benefit from his concern and hard work. Veacher+Coach+Citizen+Friend - Dedication committment, responsibility and Mike Weiland has not only met this criteria, but surpassed it. The 1987 Saga Yearbook is proud and honored to have this years book dedicated to Mr. Mike Weiland. 6 7 8 VICTOR 9 Float Competition: 1st place Seniors 2nd place Juniors 3rd place Freshmen Ath place Sophomores The theme for homecoming this year was seasons, drawn for us by our class sponsors. Our Seniors will be moving on to the game of life and our Juniors will continue to play football. As my last season I will always remember the games but I will miss the coaches, players and the great camarada that football has provided over the last eleven years. Best of Luck to everyone involved in Grayling Football and thanks for the opportunity to coach your sons. Sincerely Head Coach Bill Klinger NEVER, NEVER, GIVE IP. .. The 1986 Junior Varsity Football learn enjoyed its most successful season in many years. With a 6-2 and 1 season record the team benefited from solid line play and hard running backs, on offense and a hard- hitting and mobile corps of linebackers on defense, lhe Sophmores who led this year's team experienced much playing time as Freshmen and this year's Fresh- men class provided some solid support, learn captains this year were Rusty Argue and Brian Kernstock. They provided excellent player leadership on the field. Coaches Wolcott and Spencer felt that the season's greatest moment ocurred when the Junior Vikings trounced the Cheboygan Chiefs in the second game of the season 16-6. Wrestling is a sport which requires strength speed, dedication, mental preparation, and an unsurpassed desire to win. To be a Viking Wrestler requires a special breed of man and an extraordinary commit- ment to excellence. With a successful 1986-1987 season behind us we must look to the future with :he return of state qualifiers Tim Colling (top 12), Brian Kernstock ( top 12), Bucj Monforton (top 8), Ward Jones (5th Place), Regional qualifier Tim Cook an Mark Dan Lowe. Grayling can only anticipate the performance of such an experienced Viking squad. I will rfiss Coach Ferguson, my comrades, and the countless individuals who have supported not only me, but the wrestling program as a whole. I will miss wrestlnig and every- thing it has done for me. But the thing I will miss most is the Basketball Players! Especially the ones who think they can beat us on the mats! At that time, the advisor for the local chapter was the principal of the high school, Elmer Fenton. In the beginning, the organiza tion was not active in membership. The new members were inducted at a dinner ceremony and received a membership card. Their membership in the National Honors Society was noted by a gold emblem that was placed on the diploma. After Mr. Fenton retired from the advisor position in 1968, the leadership role changed hands almost at a yearly basis. School faculty members thet have served as advisor throughout the history at Grayling High School include former Assistant Superintendent Fraser Dean, former principal Charles Batway, Paul Lerg, Robert Bovee, and Bill Klinger. Former principal Kent Reynolds served as advisor for consecutive years until Dora lanztsch assumed the position in 1981. It was at this point in the AuSable Chapter of the National Honor Society underwent a drastic change in both function and purpose. Uhder the leadership of Mrs. Lanttsch, the charter began to perform service activities and community projects. Mrs. Lanztsch brought the charter to the current standards that require each member to volunteer a minimum of five service hours per school year of membership. Thus, the AuSable Chapter of National HOnor Society was transformed to an active service organization from a passvie in name only one due to the contributions of Mrs. Lanztsch. Now that Mrs. Lanztsch has retired from her position, the precedents she has set will be followed by the new advisor Terri Wakely. 81 Forensics leam '87 Forensics l'Eam After Districts Front L-R: Kim McDonough, Erin Hickey, Karl Schmidt, Coach Nancy Lemmen Lezlie Holden, Jamie Montoya. The program began in 19A8 in Michigan and G.H.S. began to participate in 1985. Over 700 students across the state meet in Lansing for four days each spring. Students act the roles of legislators, lobbyists, press agents, pages, governor and cabinet officials in the capitol building itself. A few goals of the organization are:to understand the legislative process; to formulate positions on issuic and respect differing viewpoints; and to develop and test leadership potential. lhe G.H.S. Every morning, as others enjoyed the warmth of a classroom, Viking band members donned jackets and instrument and prepared for another performance. Later, as the grass was covered with snow and the clouds even more menacing, there still was no rest for musicians, who traded their jackets for a chair and stand. Band is more than a class; it's a family. A family composed of many intelligent, and very talented people. And these people, in turn, are responsible not only for enlight- ening others with music, but the emotions and ideas that accompany those very expressions. So, as we see our Viking Band in action, whether it be marching in a parade or performing on a football field, let us not only listen to wonderful sounds, but also show appreciation and realize how fortunate we are to be acquainted with such a fine organization. Ed is our maintenance man at the high school and has been since July in 1973. He keeps things in good repair and at times this can be very frustrating. His work with the staff and students is greatly appreciated, so when you see him, thank him for a job well done. A brief biography on Ed's past is as follows: Ed's parents came to the U ited States from Germany in the early 1900's and settled in Saginaw, Michigan, where he was born, and his father owned and operated a grocery store. His parents bought a large tract of land East of Frederic on 612 which became known as Hartig Pines Subdivision. Their weekens were spent up North and during the week they remained and worked in Saginaw. Ed was to go into the Navy in December of 1953, but a very serious accident left him paralyzed and after several operations and many months of physical therapy he was able to walk again. He met his wife Sally at the hospital where he was at and she was taking a Licenseo Practical Nurse course there also. On April 9, 1955, Ed and Sally were married and have three children and also have three grandchildren. Ed and Sally belong to the Para-Dice Motorcycle Club out of Grand Rapids and travel throughout the country with them. They have a 1982 Honda Aspencade with a side car that they use on their trips. Ed's hobbies are fishing, hunting and oil painting. A big THANK YOU goes out to Ed Hartig for a job WELL DONE. 130 131 ratjling §laU j atth Grayling and Frederic An affiliate of Citizens Banking Corporatio Best Wishes Class of ‘87 Your love Special Eternal Complete The Orange Blossom Diamond ring you select will reflect the timeless beauty of your lives together Select your rings from our large collection of finely crafted Diamond rings to celebrate your love Choose Orange Blossom and make your dreams come true J 01 66 ’ THE RING LEADERS SINCE 1941' JEWELERS GIFTS 235 MICHIGAN AVE., DOWNTOWN GRAYLING, 348-5111 Hours Monday thru Saturday 9 to 5:30; Friday 9 to 9 1M “CO VIKINGS” Good Luck To The Grayling VIKINGS During Their ‘ S7 -‘8 8 Season!
