STATE HONORS GRAYLING HIGH AS EXEMPLARY SCHOOL Grayling High was selected as one of the best high schools in the state through the 1985-1986 Michigan Secondary School Recognition Program. The Michigan Department of Education announced Grayling High School as a Michigan Exemplary High School. In the 3 years of the secondary school recognition program, only 25 high schools from about 780 in the state have been honored as exemplary. Grayling High School was selected as one of seven finalists from 73 applications around the state and then went on to win the exemplary award. This is the first year of the recognition program that an on-site inspection was performed. Rod Place, principal for St. Joseph Public High School, was the observer sent to Grayling and he said he was very pleased with what he saw. Place said he borrowed some ideas from GHS for his larger school. He also said one of the most important standards considered in the judging was Is the school giving the community what it wants? Place said GHS has a community high school and doing a good job giving the community what it wants in education. When GHS was nominated for the exemplary award, Superintendent Kent Reynolds said it was a real plus for the community and a fantastic honor for the school district. GHS Principal, Carl Naghtin, said the honor speaks well for the students, staff, and entire community. He said it takes a team effort to produce a good program.

L AC E Y Stephan RESPECT AND ADMIRATION In light of respect and admiration, the 1986 Yearbook Staff appreciably dedicates the 1986 SAGA to Mr. Lacey Stephan. Whether in the classroom or out, he has shown friendship and assistance to each of us at least once during our high school career. It is not necessary to repeat Mr. Stephan's educational background nor his hobbies at this time, because we feel that the students are fortunate to have a teacher of his caliber on the staff. All we have to know, is that the willingness and concern of students is first and foremost in Mr. Stephan's mind and he has proven that time and time again. Those of us that have had him, we thank him, those of us that have not, have missed that little something extra. Mr. Stephan ismost deserving of this recognition and the faculty and student body congratulate and thank him.
