9 K 2 3 STATE HONORS GRAYLING HIGH AS EXEMPLARY SCHOOL Grayling High was selected as one of the best high schools in the state through the 1985-1986 Michigan Secondary School Recognition Program. The Michigan Department of Education announced Grayling High School as a Michigan Exemplary High School. In the 3 years of the secondary school recognition program, only 25 high schools from about 780 in the state have been honored as exemplary. Grayling High School was selected as one of seven finalists from 73 applications around the state and then went on to win the exemplary award. This is the first year of the recognition program that an on-site inspection was performed. Rod Place, principal for St. Joseph Public High School, was the observer sent to Grayling and he said he was very pleased with what he saw. Place said he borrowed some ideas from GHS for his larger school. He also said one of the most important standards considered in the judging was Is the school giving the community what it wants? Place said GHS has a community high school and doing a good job giving the community what it wants in education. When GHS was nominated for the exemplary award, Superintendent Kent Reynolds said it was a real plus for the community and a fantastic honor for the school district. GHS Principal, Carl Naghtin, said the honor speaks well for the students, staff, and entire community. He said it takes a team effort to produce a good program. STATE RECOGNITION - The State Board of Education honored Grayling High School as one of the best high schools in the state in ceremonies on April 22, 1986, at the State Law Building in Lansing. Accepting the award for Grayling High were Crawford AuSable School District Super- intendent Kent Reynolds (1 eft, ho 1ding award), Carl Naghtin, GHS Prin- cipa 1(behind award), Andrea Bedard, Vice-President of Junior Class(right, holding award), Bernadine Dosch, Crawford AuSable School Board of Education president (right of Bedard), Tina Meldrum, GHS student, Neil Longworth, Gayle Prause, and R.J.Hannan, GHS instructors, and Annetta Miller, from the state board of education. At left is Charles Spencer, GHS instructor, Bill Klinger, GHS counselor, and Barbara Dumouchelle, vice-president of the state board of education. (Chuck Kolb photo) L AC E Y Stephan RESPECT AND ADMIRATION In light of respect and admiration, the 1986 Yearbook Staff appreciably dedicates the 1986 SAGA to Mr. Lacey Stephan. Whether in the classroom or out, he has shown friendship and assistance to each of us at least once during our high school career. It is not necessary to repeat Mr. Stephan's educational background nor his hobbies at this time, because we feel that the students are fortunate to have a teacher of his caliber on the staff. All we have to know, is that the willingness and concern of students is first and foremost in Mr. Stephan's mind and he has proven that time and time again. Those of us that have had him, we thank him, those of us that have not, have missed that little something extra. Mr. Stephan ismost deserving of this recognition and the faculty and student body congratulate and thank him. The 16 Taking a Loss With Style Although this year’s Homecoming Dance wasn’t a victory dance, it was a celebration. The excitement and cheer display- ed at the dance hardly represented the Viking Homecoming loss to the St. Ignace Saints, 44-0. The dancing and the cele- brating continued throughout the night to the music provided by Bob Greenwood. Being honored at this year’s celebration were the mem- bers of this year’s Homecoming court and Kim Springer and Kevin Hudson, Grayling’s Homecoming King and Queen. Tim Zigilia, Michelle Welsh, Leslie Fraser, and Jeff Palmer take time out from dancing to enjoy a little conversation. Comedy, Terror and Love strike the stage of the GHS Players. The Fall Play, presented by the GHS Players was a terrifying comedy entitled, Horror High, written by Tim Kelly. This is a play about a young man, Marcus — played by Karl Schmidt, who years before, on Prom Night, lost the election of President of the Student Body. In retaliation, he burned down the gymnasium. Since then, he has spent his days in a nearby asylum, plotting his revenge. Now he’s back and it is up to Audrey, the brightest girl in the high school, to come up with a method to catch Marcus. Audrey, played by Erin Barrow, restages Prom Night! This is a play that is filled with slapstick humor, action, jokes and mistaken identities, which all add up to major hilarity. The Winter Play, however, takes on a much more serious line of action. The play, The Haunting of Hill House, adapted for stage by F. Andrew Leslie, involves a group of people, headed by Dr. Montague, that are “psychically receptive”. They are brought together in Hill House, which is a brooding Mid-Victorian Mansion, known as a place of evil, and also known to “contain ill will.” These visitors have come to probe the secrets of the old house and to draw forth the mysterious powers it is alleged to possess- powers which have brought madness and death to all of those who have lived there in the past, (3 men and 4 women). These visitors are later joined by Dr. Montague’s wife, as portrayed by Kristine Cottenham, and a friend, who have come to Hill House for their own reasons. They too, are soon ab- sorbed by the supernatural, but their approach is via direct communication with the departed spirits — a type of psychic research, which is regarded fearfully by Dr. Montague, who is played by Robert Fitzgerald, and which, as subsequent events bear out, brings on a crisis in which the evil forces of Hill House are goaded into a new, and for one of those present, fatal fury. Written by yearbook staff member Patty Hatfield FORENSICS: It is not all work and no play 1986 was the best year ever for the GHS Individual Speech Events Team, coached by Nancy Lemmen. Grayling competitors won trophies, plaques, or medals in every invitational they attended. Nearly every member of the team won an individual award sometime during the season, and everyone helped to win the first GHS Team trophy in forensics — a first place — at the Manistee Invitational. Two team members, Senior Stephanie Hindmarsh (Dramatic Interpre- tation) and Junior Kim McDonough (Extempore Speaking), qualified at Dis- tricts to compete at the regional level, and Stephanie won at Regionals to qualify for State Finals. To yield success, Forensics requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but it isn’t all work and no play. Being a member of the team gives students the opportunity to meet competitors from other schools and make new friends throughout the state. The competition can sometimes be quite intense, but with lots of deep breaths and support from fellow teammates, it is a very rewarding experience. Each year the class studies several 2-4 week units on subjects that interest the students, which this year included death and dying, birth, values clarification, and community service, as well as many others. Many A.S. assignments revolve around small group activities, and one fifth of each student s grade is determined by an individual project which may be based on any subject he or she wishes to study. Some outstanding projects this year included: developing a city of the future, creating a saleable bicycle safety computer program, learning the lan- guage of the deaf, and getting speaker Jim Tuman to address GHS students. Field trips are also an important part of Advanced Studies. Students attended the third an- nual Stratford Theater trip this year to see Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night , and also traveled to the Detroit Institute of the Arts. The program also expanded its computer resources to include two IBM PCjrs, and other computer apparatus, and for the second consecutive year competed in the Academic Festival in Elk Rapids, doing quite well in the “Brain Strain competition. These and other activities have helped make Advanced Studies an important and valuable asset to participating students’ daily routines. Erin Hickey, Junior 3rd year A.S. Student The Building Trades class is one of the only classes that gives the students the hands on experience that a student may need in the years to cane. When these students finish the class they have a feeling of accorrplishment all of their o i because it has answered one question that is often brought up in a. classrocm Where are we going to use this in life? Trades answers this question by using the knowledge that is taught in an actual job situation. Guests at the high school are always welcomed by the students with appreciation. The students not only enjoy being out of class but also enjoy the lectures and entertainment that is brought to the high school. Each person is different and his or her own opinion about the topic in question. This year the different guests not only reached the students but also the teachers as well. The bands were well accepted by the student body as they had time to party during class hours. The speakers were greatly appreciated both all of the school because it changed the everyday routine and tought the students in fun type of way. The Red Cross is a vistor every year at Grayling High. The Students who give blood have that special feeling of accomplishment because they have help to save a persons life. This is a very special feeling to know for only a small amount of blood that will be replaced in an hours time. Many students who can not give blood help in a very special way also. They work in the blood bank to help the Red Cross members keep things in order. Sometimes people try to give blood but are disappointed because they can not give blood, this is just as special as giving ’ cuz it means that they tryed and that’s what is important. 153 6ratilina State Bank Grayling and Frederic Best Wishes Class of c86 Alumni Association This year we recognize Myrle (Peg) Milnes. Her teaching career started in the building that housed K-12, our former High School, built in 1916...just before Peg came here to teach...and to become Mrs. Roy O. Milnes. She taught 7th grade Health and Geography, 8th grade English. We remember her most for the work she did with our Glee Club. Music was the love of her life...and young people. She retired in 1965, after 27 years service. She taught 1918-23 and left to raise her children, Jane Elizabeth (Rosin), class of ‘44...Roy, class of ‘48.
