‘83 Saga September 1982 - June 1983 GRAYLING CRAWFORD A Champions Build Pride The school family as well as the community share in the athletic achievements of Karyn Reynolds and John Solomonson. Karyn is the 1983 State Ski Champion in the Slalom. John is the 1983 Class C Wrestling Champion in the 167 pound weight class. This was the first time that G.H.S. placed two Champions during the same school year. Grayling High School Grayling, Michigan School Colors: Green and White About this Issue A school yearbook is just what the name implies, a book about the people and happenings that make up a particular school year. The ‘83 Saga tells the story of the 1982 83 school year at Grayling High School. As such, it is a book about the students and staff, their teaching and studies, their social life, organizations, achieve- ments and sporting events. The book has been produced by a group of GHS students and their advisor. It has been prepared for the present, for 1983, but its greatest value may be ten or twenty years in the future, for the present soon becomes the past and we want to keep in touch with yesterday and all our friends. When the school doors opened in September we found a new principal, Mr. Carl Naghtin in charge of the day to day happenings at G.H.S. Prior to coming to G.H.S., Mr. Naghtin served as high school principal at Lakeville Community Schools. Mr. Naghtin received his bachelor of Science and the Master of Arts degree from Western Michigan University. He earned his Specialist in Education degree from Central Michigan Uni- versity. Mr. Naghtin is not just an educator, he is also a husband and parent. We have included a pic- ture of Carl and Marilyn Naghtin taken at the Christmas Dance. They have three children, daughter Pam and sons John and Brad. 6 Administration Mr. Mike Branch Assistant Principal Pam Alexander Special Education Central Michigan University William Bonkowski Study Hall University ot Michigan Becky Brown English, Gym teacher Central Michigan University 4r. Twelve micro computers were installed in Mr. Smith's classroom during the sum- mer of '82. When the school year began students eagerly gathered around the electronic marvels to learn the techniques and basic language of the TRS80 computer. Mr. Smith has been busy learning and teach- ing new computer skills to students and teaching staff alike. Elementary school children have even been anxious to stay after school to work in the high school computer lab. By the time they arrive at GHS they may find computers in all of the classrooms. Bottom: Look out, here I come!! Christmas Dance Brad and Debbie will remember the Christmas Dance for many years. Everyone else had a good time, too! Christmas Week Christmas Week always brings a change of pace to GHS. Each year finds Senora Lemmon and her Espanol students singing traditional holiday songs in the hallways and classrooms. Christmas Assembly This year's Christmas Assembly was different than past years. It was a talent show of sorts with faculty and students performing instrumental and vocal music, dance and skits built around the holiday theme. Every- one in it and everybody watching had a good time. 24 Christmas Week Winter Carnival ‘83 An unusually warm winter and the lack of good snow cover may have discouraged the skiers among us, but it did not stop the Grayling Winter Pageant. Congratulations to Heidi Goss, who did great as Miss Gray- ling. Heidi’s court included (Left to Right) Sheila Burpee, Mindy Baker (1st Runner-up), Queen Heidi Goss, Wendy Savallisch (Miss Congeniality), Sheri Linendoll (2nd Runner- up and Best in Talent), Kris Casler, and Jen- ny Alef. Each of the girls was a real winner. Prom 27 This and That We will expect a report for the '84 yearbook from George Morse and Tim Taylor on their summer 83 extra- vaganza through Europe with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp International Orchestra. Denise Harrington was nominated to participate but decided not to accompany the orchestra on their tour. Denise, however, will be at- tending the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp where she will concentrate on vocal music skills. Tricha Hahn will also attend the Blue Lake Camp for advanced training in ballet. Nancy Lemmen and the Spanish students won honors at both the Saginaw Valley College Foreign Language Day (November) and Foreign Language Day at C.M.U. (April) by winning 1st Place Honors in Spanish Dance, Song, and Display competitions. Three gals from G.H.S. will be attending the ‘83 session of Girls State at Central Michigan University. Felicia Galvani, Karla Dosch, and Shawn Lovely should come back as experts in state and national government. Tom Brooks, Paul Gust, and Dave Reynolds will be our Boys State representatives on the campus of Michi- gan State. Have you ever wondered why Boys State and Girls State aren’t held together on the same campus? The summer of ‘83 will also find Karla Dosch, Shawn Lovely, and Wayne Schoonover attending Operation Bentley at Olivet College. The government seminar is designed to involve students in community and political activities. Did you notice that this is a co educational program? While the computer lab received most publicity, our new television equipment was used effectively in the classroom, at fine arts and at most sporting events. Our’ thanks to the Weyerhaeuser Corporation for making this new equipment available to the students at G.H.S. The Forensics program never gained a lot of atten- tion during the school year, but 16 people were involved, and Brenda Prause and Dave Reynolds made the grade by qualifying for State Regional competition at Ferris State College in April. The group of students pictured with Robert J. Han- nan comprised the Journalism Class and through their efforts a couple of issues of the Grayling High Times appeared on campus during the ‘83 school year. Stephanie Hindmarsh will be touring Michigan during the summer of ‘83 with the Petoskey Dance Com- pany. The group specializes in jazz dance and is well recognized throughout the midwest. With the assistance of two Heavenly Messengers, Joe manages to return to Earth in a new body, recapture his chance to win the boxing title, and fall in love. The lead role of retired teacher Norman Thayer was ably handled by senior Tim Taylor. Freshman Kathy Allen played op- posite Tim as Norman’s wife Ethel Thayer. Tim, Kathy, and the entire cast brought life to their respective roles and the audiences responded with frequent and enthusiastic applause. The play featured a unique set designed and constructed by the stage crew under the supervision of stage manager Paul Gust and set designer Trisha Hahn. Director Howard Taylor was assisted by Student Director George Morse, with Paul Gust as Stage Manager. This production of ‘‘On Golden Pond” was rated as one of the best student per- formances ever on the stage of the Joseph Stripe Auditorium. Howard Taylor. Producing a good quality yearbook is a challenging task. Nothing has been easy for the '83 Saga Staff. Each step has been a struggle and for every success there has been a matching discouragement. Yet, we feel good about the book and give credit for the final product to the entire year- book team, though in truth a few have ex- celled and carried the load for the group. Icon Yearbook 45 Jazz Band Howard Taylor, Director The GHS Jazz Band has helped fill the void caused by the demise of the traditional concert band these past several years. Performances by the band have found the 17 members and their director Howard Taylor at the Holiday Inn for a fashion show, at the Monday night school board meeting and on frequent oc- casions before school in the cafeteria. The Jazz Band is a young group with but four senior members. They have had a good year gaining valuable experience and may well form the nucleus of a larger more traditional band once the instrumental music program gets back in the groove. 46 Jazz Band Jazz Band 47 JAZZ BAND MEMBERSHIP Beth Bedard, Don Carl, Debi Dibble, Paul Gust, Stephanie Hindmarsh, Chuck Johnston, Lisa Kitchen, Jeff Luce, Jacqi MacOue, Dennis Mansfield, George Morse, lammy Morse, Wemdy Pittman, Rob Priestap, Telaine Sanderson, Tim Taylor, Dean Wallison. Playing a tough schedule and teams like Rogers City and Roscommon making the play-offs added to the type of competition we played all year. Many players gained valuable game experience which will help the Vikings for next season. A never say die season was the motto as the season went on. Good luck to our graduating Seniors who move on to newer things and good luck to the returning juniors who take on the task of play- ing football. -Head Coach Bill Klinger The Grayling J.V. football team had another spectacular season, finishing it off with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. After a slow start, with next to no practice due to conditions, the girls began to mount their victories. The girls finished the season with a total of 63 wins, 20 losses and 1 tie. The team placed 2nd in the Michigan Huron Shores Conference and 2nd in the Regional meet. This 2nd place qualified the girls for State Finals at Crystal Mountain. At Crystal, the girls finished the sea- son with a 5th place in the state meet. Because the skiers competed against other class schools at the state meet, they were actually the Class C State Champions. The girls will do quite well again next year with their only loss being Sr. Kristin Casler. The G.H.S. boys ski team had a bit more difficulty completing their season. The boys team was very young and inexperienced, with the only returning racer from 1982 being Sr. Dave Martella. The remaining racers were made up of Sophomores. Unfortunately, weather conditions did not help matters, for the team needed practice on the slopes, but there was a request for snow first. The boys completed the 1983 season with 54 wins, 30 losses and 1 tie. The team finished 5th in the Michigan Huron Shores Conference and 4th in the Regional meet. When asked to summarize the ‘82- 83 season one could go into great detail about outstanding individual and team accomplishments, however, there is an area which has not always been included into this summarization Ability is not a char- acteristic which can be handed out, but one which must be brought out of an in- dividual, this often proves to be the most difficult task in coaching. As any wrestler would agree. Coach Don Ferguson is the individual to whom we owe any personal success. The 82-‘83 season was an outstanding one. but though outstanding, most wrestlers remain hungry for perfection. Along with ability, a desire to excel as an In- dividual and as a team is brought out. this desire for perfection we call hunger Even though a great season has just ended - we do not look back, we look ahead, hungry to fulfill our potential, bringing out more of our ability. This hunger and motivation is aroused by the coach, this hunger is the key to success. When analyzing the ac- complishments of Coach , one could go on and on, but more impressive than the Coach of the Year award he has recently received, is the person he is along with being the coach. Our act of dedicating this annual is in response to his many years of personal dedication to us, the past and present students and faculty of Grayling High School. On the personal side, some of Mr. Trudgeon's hobbies include: photography, carpentry, hiking and cross country skiing. Mr. Trudgeon is a product of the Sault Saint Marie school system. He began his college work at Lake Superior State College, graduating from Michigan State University. Following college days he served in the regular army for two years. Upon his discharge from the military, he came to Grayling and began his teaching career at G.H.S. Mr. Trudgeon is presently In his 27th year as a member of the high school faculty. Jack and Aggie Trudgeon will soon celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Together they have added 9 children to the local school population and with 5 grandchildren we can expect the Trudgeon name to be on the school atten- dance records for years to come. The gratitude and thanks of the yearbook staff to Jack Trudgeon, recipient of our 1983 book dedication for smiling upon us these past 27 years. 128 Dedication Editor’s Pages As co-editors of the ‘83 annual we became aware of the fact that a yearbook doesn’t just happen. It takes the patience, dedication and especially the cooperation of the entire production staff to put a yearbook together. The high level of cooperation on the part of the section editors and staff has made our job as co-editors considerably more pleasant. We would like to personally thank all the yearbook members who have helped in the production, design, and the sale of advertising and books. A special “thank you” to the section editors who successfully completed their pages in meeting production deadlines. And of course, a final “thank you” to our faculty advisor, Mr. Chuck Kolb, who helped make the ‘83 edition possible. We are confident that this will prove to be an enjoyable book for the student body, and that in the future it will serve to bring us back to the many good memories and friends that have made up the school year ‘82-‘83. A special “thanks” to all of you who in the day to day routine of the school year became the subjects on which this annual is based. Our year together was a good year and so we say our fond farewell to one and all at Grayling High School.
