Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1982 volume:

Look at the Year we’ve Built September 1981 — June 1982 Grayling High School Grayling, Michigan Theme Look at the Year we’ve Built We chose “Look at the Year We’ve Built,” as the theme for this year’s yearbook after quite a bit of debating between 3 different theme’s. “Look at the Year We’ve Built” was decided upon because we felt that it best suited this school year with all of the problems that have arisen throughout the year. We each have built our own year, be it through sports, theatre, or our friends, and have come through it like true Vikings! 2 Table of Contents Table of Contents 3 was orgi ice of pe + Grayling Youth Booster Club V z At e ®nd Crawford County Arts Council -sars ■ %- T? 30t« k Jftr EuH The Crawford Co this year specifically ti ing arts activities for Because of their love 1 need to perform shar this group raised and Last summer the voters of the Crawford AuSable :hool District defeated two requests for additional millage. Among many programs to be funded by the pro- posed increase were high school athletics, musical, and dramatic activities. Faced with the necessity of cutting these programs, the board of education developed a policy and procedures which would allow for alternative forms of funding programs not funded with tax dollars. Because of a deep seated concern and love for the youth of this school district and a dedication to the prin- cipal that activities are vitally important to young people, two groups tackled and accomplished the awesome task of providing the funding needed to insure the presence of athletic and performing arts activities for the students of Grayling High School during the 1981-82 school year. The Grayling Youth Booster Club raised and con- tributed in excess of $20,000 which allowed the atWetic program to exist on the same level as the 1980-81 schoo year. Because of their unyielding dedication, 200 Gray ling High School students were able to participate in in terscholastic sports and 600 Grayling High Schoo students and the entire community were able to particl pate as spectators and to feel the pride of accomplish ment and identity which athletics give the school and community. In addition, the Booster Club has provided 54,000 in scholarship money to nine 1982 Grayling High School seniors to enable them to continue their formal education process. and recognition of the isticaily talented youth, touted in excess of S4.000 which allowed dramatic and musical programs to proceed on an extra curricular basis. Because of their unyielding dedication 60 Grayling High School students had the opportunity to perform and the student body and community shared their performances and felt the pride and identity created by these activities. Grayling High School students do care and are for- ever appreciative of the efforts of these two fine com- munity groups. In recognition of this appreciation and mutual love and respect, the 1982 SAGA is dedicated to the Grayling Youth Booster Club and the Crawford County Arts Council. Pictured are the winners of the Booster Club Scholarships for 1982 with Irv Mclsaac and Garland Bud” Joyce who, along with Rosalia Matyn of the Crawford County Arts Council received the Yearbook Dedication at the Awards assembly from the Editor’s Karen Klbbe and Cecilia Canfield. i • A X®, A - 3s€ 198J ' •. red its Publication Editor'! Brown |, A word of appreciation and thanks to the Executive Board for their help throughout these past months. For with- jt their effort and support, this yearbook would have never to print. Karen and I would like to especially thank the Crawfor County Avalanche and employee. Rena Neilson for all the assistance in the printing of the copy for this yearboc publication. Without the guidance of our advisor, Mr. Reynolds, who took the time to organize and establis yearbook staff. Also a special thanks to Thomas D. Keiswet- ter of Josten’s American Yearbook Company. For we could S? ■ not have begun or completed this book without these two people. Thanks! Thanks to all the people who did photography and my apologies go out to everyone else I might have missed. I thank the entire staff for everything they put into the produc- tion of the 1982 Grayling High School Yearbook. Cecilia Canfield, Editor i ■it1 4 wrr Being Editor’s-i n-Chief during our Junior year is truly an experience that we won’t soon lorget. With the failure of the millage last fall, the future of the 1982 Saga was in doubt. Finally in December of 1981, Mr. Kent Reynolds decided to be our advisor and organized the yearbook staff because he felt that the yearbook is an important part of a school year. To Mr. Reynolds we owe many thanks, for his patience with us and for his guidance when we weren’t really sure With the knowledge that no seniors were work- ing on the yearbook, Marian Matyn and Lisa Logan stepped in to tackle the Senior Section — Many thanks!! Special thanks to the 16 other students who worked on the book. Thank you Mr. Kolb for the back- ground photo for these pages, we truly appreciate you! In conclusion, we would like to remind you, the reader, that this yearbook is dedicated to two very important and special groups to the student body of Grayling High School: The Crawford County Arts Council and The Grayling Youth Booster Club. It took until second semester to arrange funding for the theatre program, but thanks to the efforts of the newly-formed Crawford County Arts Council, the G.H.S. Players produced Joseph Heller’s adaptation of his novel, “Catch-22,” in late February. The play — comic in tone, yet somber in theme — utilized the abilities of its 23 student actors to interpret over 40 roles to achieve its fast, frantic mood. The message of “Catch-22”, according to director Nancy Lemmen, is that war, not unlike other areas of life, is crazy. While people in power make the wrong decisions for the wrong reasons, the innocent and the good suffer as a result. The cast and crew express their appreciation to the CCAC for its generous support of the production of “Catch-22.” 110 Winter Play 111 Band Band —Back row (l-r): Zann Lindsay, Dean Wallison, Larry Goodale. 4th row (l-r): Dave Doty, Jeff Prause. 3rd row (l-r): Don Carl, Jeff Welch, Dan May, George Morse, Rob Priestap, Paul Gust. 2nd row (l-r): Lexis Wagner, Tim Taylor, Kris Larson. 1st row (l-r): Kim Ayers, Traci Riley, Gerry Johnson, Shirley Gravelyn. Speed, conditioning, coordination, mental stability, and physical strength are some of the elements the sport demands. Putting these and other talents together gave the mat men their most successful season ever in GHS history. The wrestlers ended up with 10 trophies and a season record of 11-1. The season was highlighted with dual victories over Rogers City and Petoskey. Both took a great team effort and was the first time either team had been beat in a dual by Viking mat men. When conference came the Vikes were ready to go as they took 9 of 13 men to the finals and brought home the conference crown. This was also the first conference title for the mat men. The next jour- ney was to districts where the G.H.S. wrestlers came out on top and qualified for the regionals. At regionals the mat men competed with 30 other schools and came out with the first place trophy. Then came the state finals, which 7 wrestlers had qualified to attend. Five of these grapplers placed in the top five while the team took 3rd in the state. I know that the team and each individual could not have accomplished as much without the support and dedication of coach Don Ferguson. Along with his yelling and strict orders came a wonderful man and great sportsman. He made this year’s Grayling mat men. Thanks!
