Strength and Fairness Firmness and fairness are two words which describe Mr. Kinkerter, the Teacher. He is the sort of person who challenges us to do our best and we appreciate his readiness to help us with our studies. His quick smile and cheerful manner brings encouragement and frequently brightens our day. For this reason we nominated and have voted our approval of Mr. Bill Kinkerter as the recipient of this dedication. Your Saga Staff Dedication Born and raised in the Lansing area. Bill Kinkerter would be first to tell you that he took football. He left his studies in his senior year. 1940, to enlist in the Marine Corps. He received his training at Parris Island. S.C.. and was stationed at Quantico where he played football for the Marine Corps. As a member of the First Marine Division he helped build Quantanimo Bay Naval Base and during World War II was stationed in the South Pacific Theatre Wounded at Guadacanal. he was discharged in August of 1945. Mr. Kinkerter received the Purple Heart. Good Conduct Medal, and awards for sharpshooting and work with hand grenades Mr. Kinkerter was married to Beverly Schaible in June. 1944. at Bloomington. Indiana, while Bill was stationed at Crane Naval Ammunition Depot. They moved to Grayling in 1947 where Mr. Kinkerter worked for Bear Arhcery for one year. From 1948 to 1935 he worked at Camp Grayling as a general foreman During the summer months he worked with teachers Gene Lawler. LeRoy Chrisitan and Earl Gierke. These teachers encourage him to complete his high school education by attending night school and in 1950 he was presented his diploma from Grayling High School Again, encouraged by Earl and Christian. Mr. Kinkerter entered Central Michigan Unversity in 1953. graduating in 1957. with a BS Degree in Commerce and Social Science While at C M U he worked as a radio announcer for Station WCEN in Mt Pleasant. In 1957. Mr. Kinkerter returned to Grayling to do his practice teaching under the guidance of Mr Gierke. In addition. Mr Kinkerter has earned his Masters Degree from C.M.U. as well as his permanent Vocational Education Certificate. His teaching career had its beginning in the Commerce Department of Frederic High School That same fall of 1957 he was offered the position of Camp Commander. Camp Grayling, and assumed those duties on January 1. 1958. He remained at Camp Grayling until June. 1967. and in the fall of that year resumed his teaching career in the Commerce Department of Gerrish-Higgins High School. Roscommon. Mr. Kinkerter became a member of the Grayling High School teaching staff in the fall of 1968 His hobby-interests are hunting, fishing, canoeing, reading, gardening, lapidary, his dogs, and of course, his family. 4 Dedication
