Grayling High School Crawford AuSable School District Grayling, Michigan Mr. Kent Reynolds, Principal Dr. William Diedrich, Superintendent Mr. Charles Kolb, Faculty Advisor Dawn Crowell, Publication Editor Carolyn Ayers. Business Manager Dee Bindschatel, Senior Editor Connie Darnell, Copy Editor Credit The lines of verse which appear on the cover of this edition of the Saga are the creation of faculty member Mike Delp and come from his larger work entitled “A Short Guide to the Wilderness . Credits for photographs appearing in this book are listed on page 141. 2 Theme Theme Statement “Change” is the chosen theme for the 1979 edition of the Saga. This theme is the outgrowth of a yearbook staff canoe trip and conversations regarding recent events in our lives and the community. The constant flow of the river, the sights and sounds of the day. were all reminders to us that change is a real and essential part of our lives. “Change” can be synonymous with growth and to this end we are given the opportunity to invest time and energy to secure an education. Perhaps knowing how to bring about constructive change, is what our days at G.H.S. are all about. All of this to the end that we may live happy-purposeful lives among a community of happy-purposeful people. Theme 3 Strength and Fairness Firmness and fairness are two words which describe Mr. Kinkerter, the Teacher. He is the sort of person who challenges us to do our best and we appreciate his readiness to help us with our studies. Special Days 76 Homecoming Homecoming 77 We were all proud of our Homecoming Court and pleased that Skip Olson and Shelly Flck were chosen King and Queen to reign over the event. The entire student body was fired up with enthusiasm for Homecoming Week. The Spirit Week competition was won by the Seniors, closely followed by the Juniors. The Sophomores captured third place by winning the Volkswagon Stuffing and Ugly Leg Contests. The Freshmen followed far behind even though they won the fast moving Chair Race. The enthusiasm was dampened when our Vikings were defeated by Rogers City by the score of 20 to 8. Even though the Grayling Vikings lost the game, we did not lose our spirit, for we know that next year we will all try our hardest to make it our finest, and that’s all that really counts. 78 Homecoming Homecoming 678 Saturday, October 21st Disney world characters provided the theme for the 1978 Homecoming Parade. Mary Poppins and the Junior Class won top honors with the float “We’ll Give ‘Em A Dose They Won’t Forget.” Taking second place with their Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs float were the Seniors. The Sophomores paraded Dumbo to third place over Thump ‘Em and Skunk ‘Em of the Freshman Class. Congratulations to the Junior Class in winning the float contest. Almost everyone logged above two-hundred miles. The lessons of this year and continued hard work should bring us a team of veterans next season that will show greatly improved scores. Each member must give 100% plus of himself herself at every rehearsal to insure good performances. Why do so many bandsmen submit to this type of format? This can be answered in one word-PRIDE. To experience the feeling of accomplishment is motivation enough to strive for higher and attainable goals. Therefore, it is most important that 61 individuals combine their thoughts and think as one unit. Another important factor to be taken into great consideration is how the art of music let’s one express inner thoughts and emotions. This is an integral part in developing and expanding one's horizon. In many High Schools the band is the backbone of school spirit, and the Grayling High School Marching Band is no exception. They take great pride in helping support the athletic program of this school. On behalf of the marching band, I would like to thank the high school students, faculty, and the entire community for their support of the 1978 Grayling High School Marching Vikings. Jeffrey K. Basketball 103 “ 4 Scrappy, Hustling, Never Say Die Team” The 1978-79 Varsity basketball team made up for their lack of size by playing with a lot of heart and pride. They were a scrappy, hustling, never say die team that played several close and exciting basketball games. The fans were treated to some very entertaining Tuesday Friday nights by this years cage squad. Standing L-R: Head Coach Wolcott, Ken Helsel. Lack of game experience, other teams had played more games, hurt the team in some of their encounters. However, the Freshman held together and came up with a winning season. Outstanding members of the squad on offense and defense were Center Tracy Fagan and Guard-Forward Terry Norman. Also contributing to the Viking attack were Ted Methner at Guard. Jim Harland-Forward. and Paul Harland at Guard Other players seeing action and showing much promise were Jack and Joel Money. Todd Reeves. Craig Collen, Jamie Radebaugh, Craig Jones and Scott Zigila. With the loss of seven members from last year’s girls’ varsity volleyball squad, it looked as though the 1978-79 season would be devoted to rebuilding efforts for the future. Fortunately, this was not the case: With the combined efforts of varsity veterans Joan Baynham, Maribeth Good, and Karen Hanson; former JV players Debgie Golnick and Lisa Radebaugh; and volleyball newcomers Krystal Bickman, Brenda Carlson and Regina Methner. the team made consistently fine showings—and more than held its own in competition. The junior varsity squad, playing with only four veterans and six newcomers, fought hard for the victories it accrued. The team also showed promise for future years, when it will be playing with a more experienced squad. Girls J.V. GOAL works because the people within the program care about each other and about a program of learning which expects people to be responsible and inquisitive. Learning is approached as a joyous process in the GOAL program. Students are encouraged to develop study and exploration in areas of interest while still maintaining the academic necessities of the regular school program. There are thirty-two people in the GOAL program who have found that learning can happen just about anywhere and that the most important place is within the self. Goal 139 Concluding Thoughts Yearbook Staff Picture Page 133 A certain satisfaction is experienced when the final page mats are mailed to the publisher and the glue and scissors put away for another day. More satisfying still is the knowledge that those involved have done their best to produce a book which will bring pride to their school and community. The staff set out to accomplish certain things, namely, to tell the story of the school year and to provide a photo record of the people who make up the school family. We trust that this yearbook will be enjoyed today, but better still, will be of growing worth as the present becomes the past. The Saga Staff thanks each other for not loosing a sense of humor when the going got rough and expectations and demands burdensome. We welcome Dr. Diedrich and family to our midst. At the high school we are especially pleased to have Cathy and Sue as classmates and friends.
