Robin Gentry Shonnon Kelly Co-Editors Under the able guidance of Mr, Clifford Perry, chairman, the School Board has expanded the school's various programs so as to insure our having the best education possible. Included in evidence of prog- ress this year are the co-ordina- tion of science education, cen- tral operation of the school sys- tem's cafeterias, two full-time guidance directors, and the building of a trade school for boys interested in skilled profes- sions. For these contributions to the betterment of our system, we are most sincerely grateful. l i7 ROW ONE: Mr, Paul Pegram, Mrs. Norton Tennilleg Mr. Clifford Perry, Chairman, Mr. M. C Benton, Jr., the Rev, William Crawford. ROW TWO: Mr. William Knott, Mr. Phil Froelich. We look to our administrators Cx ROW ONE: Mr. Marvin Ward, Ass't. Superintendent, Dr. A. Craig Phillips, Superintendent, Dr. William Self, Ass't. Superintendent. ROW TWO: Mr. C. T. Leinbach, Comptroller, Mr. Ned Smith, Administrative Ass't. As the school system is now be- ing converted from the 8-4 to the 6-3-3 organization, next year Gray will have only tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade classes. For the purpose of a study of the senior high school curriculum, the Administrative Staff, in conjunction with the School Board, has organi- zed a Central Committee, composed of representatives from both the city school system and the public, ln order that we may be offered the best education possible, a compre- hensive two-year investigation is be- ing made to find weaknesses and possible means of improvement. Mrs. Harry Barnes, Pres., Mr. J A. Woodward, Principal, Mrs, G, E, Runge, Treggj Mr- Vi,-,gem l-lamriclc, Vice-Pres., Mrs. Joe Brown, Sec. and parents lor guidance. Interested parents and faculty members met the first Monday night in each month to discuss and plan for their common interests, their children and students. The board, consisting of P.T.A. officers, chairmen of committees, and Shannon Kelly, a student re- presentative, planned beneficial and inspiring programs around the P.T.A. National Congress theme, Strengthening the Home-Source of Our Nation's Greatness, and the state theme, For Our Children -Creative Life in a Changing World. Better family relationships and a closer tie between parents and their children were stressed. Excitement reigned high as the Music Department prepared to give its annual Christmas program to parents and friends at the PTA. meeting, Decem- ber 7. The chorus, under the direction of Miss Felicia Cash, presented selections of the Yuletide season. The band and the newly organized orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Leroy Rowley, gave a Christmas con- cert. Later in the year the curtain rose on Grayites demonstrating their talents in drama as the Speech Arts and Dramatics De- partment presented the program for the meeting of the P. T. I fax x-- ' I ALVIN MACON Memorial to o Highly Regorded Fellow Student With the passing of Alvin Macon, Gray High School lost a valuable citizen, whose example meant much to us as students, Christians, and good citizens. Though only lo years old, he put that short time to the best use. Among his many jobs were assistant secretary of the student organization and president of the Key Club. An honor student, he faithfully attended games and supported school affairs, His school spirit often put others of us to shame. Active in Boy Scouting, Alvin was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow, He served as treasurer of the Winston- Salem Presbytery's Senior High Fellowship. At work or play he showed a good sense of humor, sincerity, and high standards. During his lang illness, his courage and uncomplain- ing patience made a deep impression upon us. When everyday matters were lost in the broader issue of death, he concerned himself with the real significance and importance of life itself. Honor society inductions, proms, and class rings add a sparlcle to laces ol luniors. Becky Brown, Wayne Blizard, Linda Linville, and Bobby Hauser lead Miss Billie Woodruff's homeroom in the Grand March. . .' Mr. J. A. Woodward measures Pat O'Neal and Howard Collins for junior rings. ' 69 Board Members Ready hands, strong minds, great hearts, and true faith are characteristics that our student officers possess. They endeavored to inspire the student body to support projects of the student organization, and strove to create interest among their fellow students in all school activities. Student officers compiled material in the form of homeroom bulletins to be used as a basis for discussion in homeroom meetings every Tuesday. Eye-catching bulletin boards, attractive posters in the halls, and a smooth flow of traffic within the building are some of the accomplishments of the superintendents. Results of their work can be recog- nized by cordial relations between students and faculty, a clean campus, orderly conduct in study halls, and the neat appearance of the school's interior. By attend- ing board meetings on Monday mornings, serving on various committees, and presiding during homeroom meetings, these students fulfilled their duties with competence throughout the year. ln order for a president to remain in office, a good scholastic aver- age and favorable conduct grades must be main- tained. Assisting the homeroom presidents were the board members. While serving on committees, promoting good school spirit, and helping other students to observe the Gray High Honor Code, the board mem- bers helped to make Gray the progressive school it is. 1,4 '.. Blue and Gold Staff With eager hearts and idea-filled minds, the Blue and Gold staff slowly but determinedly began preparations for the yearbook a year ago. During the summer, even before school had begun, the new editors started work on the annual by drawing the dummy, deciding upon the cover, and pre- paring for work to begin in the fall. Carefully written copy, picture arrangements, identifica- tions, and layouts are only a small portion of the many tasks performed by the staff. To present a complete, interesting, and enjoyable year- book so that the members of the student body can recapture memories is, of course, the main objective of the staff, but there is also an inner desire to win another first-place rating, BLUE AND GOLD STAFF Robin Gentry Co-Editor Shannon Kelly Co-Editor Judy Griffin Copy Editor Nancy l-lowerton Senior Editor Jewel Rayfield Senior Editor Pat Boyd Junior Editor Sara Hoover Junior Editor Nancy Bowman Index Editor Sandra Casey Index Editor Gail Johnson lndex Editor Pat Tesh Index Editor Jane Fields . Journalism, however, is not a class of all work and no play, as the students had parties and socials to celebrate special events, such as the Quill and Scroll induction, held December 4, and the Christmas season, Sue Thornton, editor, and Mollie Leitzes, man- aging editor, devoted their fourth period study halls to the aid of the first-year students. Under the guidance of Mr. G. D. Sexton, the machine shop boys made industrial tools, which were either used by the shop or sold. This was the first year that the machine shop class was under the supervision of the Industrial Education Program. Next year the new Industrial Center on Link Road will be completed. F Soft, strumming sounds coming from the bandroom were the melodious strains of warm-up exercises of the orchestra. This is the first year of the newly-organized group. The 20 members of the orchestra practiced every day during fifth period and after school. Their first and one of the most enjoyable performances of the year was the annual Christmas Program, presented for the P. T. A., December 3. Lo How a Rose 'Ere Blooming, Silent Night, and O Come All Ye Faithful were three selec- tions used for this performance. Starting as beginners, members practiced the ever- present do-re-me. Next came primary tunes such as Mary Had a Little Lamb. Then one day we heard the quiet sound of Holy, Holy, Holy, and we realized our beginners were becoming accomplished musicians! The band, with familiar tunes, popular songs, and lively marches, added spirit to all pep meetings. Clashing of symbols and booming of drums were sounds heard coming from the bandroom as the members practiced faithfully. Just before the Christmas holidays was a particular- ly busy time, as the band practiced earnestly to pre- sent the annual Christmas Concert for the P.T.A., December 3, and to march in the annual Christmas Parade, November 28. School spirit was greatly increased by the yelling fourteen as they led the students in new and old cheers. Among their activities were leading cheers at the ball- games and making blue and gold pom poms. Cheerleaders were also in charge of chartering buses for out-of-town foot- ball and basketball games.
