Gray High School in this, the l959 BLUE AND GOLD. Activities, both scholastic and extra-curricular, are spotlighted to show the well-rounded school life that the students at Gray High enjoy. Although the school year is a comparatively small part of the school's history, which extends through twenty-nine years, it has been nine months of hard work, achievement, and sometimes disappointment for those students and teachers who are vitally connected with Gray and have greatly contribu- ted to its outstanding school spirit. To assist them to relive now and in the future each moment spent dur- ing the school year of l959 is the purpose of this yearbook. Brenda Coulter Tommy N. HISTGRY We, the l959 graduates, looked forward eager- ly to our first United States History telecast, which is offered to the seniors. We had heard so much about it from last year's history class that we want- ed to see for ourselves just what it was like. Broadcasts were continued this year with lO8 telepupils, under the supervision of Misses Daisy Lee Glasgow and Helen Smith. Originating from WUNC-TV in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the telecast was relayed to viewers in Northwest North Carolina by WSJS-TV in Win- ston-Salem, Miss Lois Edinger, a graduate of Mere- dith College, was cur telecast teacher. Meeting in the cafeteria every morning at eight forty-five for the thirty-six weeks of the year, with the telecast beginning at nine o'clock and ending at nine-thirty, we becarne a part of the largest his- tory class in North Carolina. We spent the twenty- five minutes of free-time reviewing, asking ques- tions, or taking pop tests. The purpose of the television classes in our schools is to attempt to make good use of the tele- vision medium and to find out whether large groups can be taught as effectively through the medium of television as in a smaller group in a regular class room. Besides the knowledge of history, some of the values we have gained from this new type of class have been the development of self-reliance and responsibility. The educational television experiment is possible through the financial assistance and the co-opera- tion of the Ford Foundation and the local School Board. 4 l, 853 l'l .I I 1 W 3iiif'iS4 ' M135 .ri 4551355 I., 'law READING PROGRAM I read 328 words this week! My score was only 277 words, but l made IO on my comprehen- sion test. These are a few of the remarks that we heard every Friday after the reading exercises. Our senior class this year is proud of the reading program, which has been set up permanently in our English classes. The course was begun last year on an experimental basis with a few senior and freshman classes. The compilation of results show- ed so much progress that the administrators offer- ed developmental reading to all students this year. The purpose of the program is to improve our reading comprehension and vocabulary rates. We read selections from special books while our teach- ers clocked the reading-speed with a stopwatch. So that we could graph our progress, we kept folders containing charts. We were anxious to see how much we had improved, and the best part of it all was that we were competing against ourselves, not each other, Progress gained from this program helped us in our other studies and prepared us for more advanced material. Speed in reading was not stressed so much as was comprehension. Our rates of speed were increased only as comprehension was maintained. We are greatly indebted to our principal for in- augurating the program, our administration for ex- tending the plan, our guidance director for super- vising the testing, and our teachers for aiding us greatly in improving our reading. 39 SENIOR DIRECTORY GAYLE E.
