Standing: Marvin Ward, A. Craig Phillips, Superintendent, Wfilliam C. Self. A Backward Glimpse james A. Gray High School was founded in 1930 as South Junior High, under the leadership of Mr. M. Shields, principal. It was one of the first junior high schools in Winston-Salem, and included grades six, seven, and eight. , I S The school started with a faculty consisting of Mr. Shields, principal, Miss Kathleen Hall, guidance, Margaret Cobb, secretary, and twenty-three teachers. ' Gray became a high school in 1935, with its name being changed to South High School. In 1939 the again changed, this time to its present one, james A. Gray High School, honoring one of Winston-Salemfs ing citizens and benefactors. At this time the school was under the guidance of Mr. K. G. Phillips. The twelfth grade was added in 1941, at which time the south end of the building was expanded to space for the science laboratory, the band room, two lavatories, the machine shop, and five more classrooms. Our boys' gymnasium, built in 1951, provides a more modern and spacious place for our games. At the present, Gray has a faculty consisting of forty members including Mr. J. A. Woodward,. Robert Hanes, assistant principal, Miss Ruth Holton, secretary, Mrs. Grace james, guidance, Mrs. Louise dietitian, Miss Sally Johnston, librarian, and various driving teachers. Since its foundation Gray has advanced and expanded into a modern and efficient high school. . thousand pupils, including the eighth grade, attend daily, and they, along with the faculty, have made a which we are justly proud.
