Marshaling for the seniors at class day and graduating exercises were Sarah Long, chief, Janie Posey Swaim, Carol Burchette, Linda Guinn, Jane McClain, Janet Fansler, and Ann Morris. Junior class sponsor Mrs. Libbie Stines was assisted in making plans for the Junior-Senior Prom by class officers, Bob Den- ham, president, Leary Cook, vice-president, Benny Payne, treasurer, and Sarah Long, secretary. Not only did Jane McClain win a trip to New York City for placing first in the World Peace contest, but she also placed first in the city-county I Speak for Democracy contest. Ably playing for Coach Tom Cash's Western District Class AA Conference Champion football team were juniors Phil Poe, John Brown, Ken Hayes, Johnny Bailey, Jud Ferguson, Wayne Shugart, Clyde Bovender, Donald Eaton, and Leary Cook. Tapped into the National Honor Society were Rita Parrish, Kay Swaim, Ronald Shackelford, Frances Parker, Jane McClain, Anne Martiner, Sarah Long, Linda Guinn, Janet Lemons, Amy Gatewood, Geraldine Crim, Margaret Benton, Faye Brown, and Bob Denham. At last our position as dignified seniors became a reality, a rank of which each of us was proud. Chosen to lead the work of the student organization were Bob Denham, president, Sarah Long, recording secretary, Anne Martiner, corresponding secretary, and Wayne Shugart, treasurer. Leading the student body at all of our pep meetings and athletic contests were cheerleaders, Janet Fansler, chief, Ann Morris, Linda Guinn, Sandra Caldwell, Millie Holt, Gay Nell Harris, Jane McClain, Alicia Jones, Kitty Avis, and Rita Parrish. The football team chose quarterback Philip Poe to serve as co-captain for the 1956 varsity football team, which repeated as Class AA Western Conference Champions. Benny Payne, Philip Poe, Burke Johnson, Bob Burchette, Doug Tetter, John Hutchins, Preston Williams, and Captain Bob Denham led Coach Larry Graham's Grayhounds to a successful basketball season. The National Honor Society inducted Ima Jean Cook, Evelyn Crutchfield, Eleanor Fishel, Vincent Hamrick, Jimmy Leonard, Ann Morris, Linda Robertson, and Carol Staley for membership, the Masque and Gavel selected Frances Parker, and the Quill and Scroll chose Judy Veasey, Evelyn Crutchfield, Betty Sue Bledsoe, and Geraldine Crim. For his outstanding accomplishments in the National Merit Scholarship Contest, Wayne Ashworth was chosen as a finalist. Kenneth Hayes was chosen for the All-Conference and All-City football teams. These are just a few of our many and varied high school activities which have been indelibly imprinted upon our minds- pleasant memories that even time cannot erase. Our long-awaited goal of graduation is at last a reality, and our hearts are some- what heavy as we make our exit from our alma mater, where the most profitable and enjoyable years of our lives have been spent.
