DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY USS GRAY (DE-1054) FPO SAN FRANCISCO 96601 To the Officers and Men in GRAY, This cruisebook summarizes your exemplary accomplishments during an extremely arduous seven month deployment with the Seventh Fleet in sustained combat operations. In retrospect, we remember the high points and the good times we shared dur- ing that period of time in our lives. However, and to keep the record straight, let me pay tribute to your superior accomplishments which collectively and consistently made GRAY one of the most combat ready ships in the Western Pacific. There was no mission assigned to GRAY which was not com- pleted thoroughly and with comolete professionalism. Let us n °t forget the hard work, the long hours and the tension of being in a combat environment. You performed your job under enemy attack in the Gulf of Tonkin and you contributed sign- ificantly to the success of our nation ' s efforts in the Western Pacific. I am most proud of the job we did. Please accent my sincere thanks and my congratulations on your accomolish- ments . I feel it is most appropriate and a great final tribute to you that our ship was awarded the Battle Efficiency E for Excellence upon the conclusion of our WESTPAC deployment. You and I know why we were chosen for this distinctive award. We served together in GRAY and know what a great team we had. Years from now when you re-read this book, please remember that I am most grateful for your individual efforts which made our ship a truly great ship. K J 3 V G. R. SUSAG Commander, U. S.- ' Navy Commanding Officer WALSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY, Marceline, Mo. 64658 -
