AVY AY CDE-10542 FPO SAN FRANCISCO 96601 25 August 1971 Dear GRAYMEN: This cruise book is the first in a long series of similar pictorial documents recording the names, faces and deeds of the men who make GRAY the greatest. It is significant that this memorial recordsthe individuals in their many moods and manners because these are the characteristics and traits which have dom- inated GRAY these past few months and have resulted in the attain- ment of our many goals. The ship was an inanimate body until the rich red blood of good men placed life into the various parts which constitute the whole. Quite obviously this GRAY blood was good, since the body developed and performed so well throughout the cruise All of us in GRAY sensed that we would be ready for a WESTPAC deployment early because of our rapid rate of maturity in the months following commissioning. Our material and personnel readiness objectives were from the outset, to be a ship ready to cope with any situation and to be known by one and all as an efficient and capable ship. Our material readiness objectives basically called for us to be ready for any assignment on short notice. If I could summarize the cruise without loss of perspective I would say that we were assigned a wide spectrum of tasks which test- ed our predeployment objectives and that we met all with dispatch and efficiency. We were called upon to assume the duties and com- mitments of others or to support them in one manner or another. we did this with no great effort because we were ready - we had attain- ed our goals of being a capable, dependable combat unit. In reflect- ing back on the cruise, it is easy to see that all of you did your' job and a lot more in order that GRAY could do hers - but then her job is our job, and doing our job is the essence of GRAY and that is - readiness in the defense of our country. Upon our return to San Diego, the first great GRAY crew subjected to a steady erosion through the transfer of fine men. In their place came good solid repl equally competent -.so GRAY's great cr ' into the future so long as we al ing GRAY fully ready.
