Calmly thou art standing, through the years that pass, Otf'ring joy and beauty to eaeh eager lass, Undisturbed by tempests, ehangeless in thy love, Radiant and kindly, like the skies above, Thou, dear Alma Mater, thou art ours to love. A SONNET Gray Court, thy head is lifted high, In calm serenity, with much grace, Calm and serene, beneath the friendly sky Wliitfli watches thee and bends to toueh thy faee, Mayhap the winds may beat thee, tieree and wild, Long may the sun from thee be l1id away, And then, when storms are gone, the heavens mild, Almost may thou be touched by wind-driven spray. Yet thou dost never bend to those less strong, Thou knowest the sun and moon Zlllti stars for friend, And thou who has stood proudly here so long Shalt stand serene and calm unto the end. Thou holdest thy head with glad assuranee high, And o'er thee bends the guarding, tender sky. 7 EVIHILOI'-i7'?'-0lIif'f . . . Busimfss Mcmagw' Alumnae Hcrorflfffr Calendar .,..... . Roommate, what a shock. I haven't seen you for ages. After 'I left Gray t'ourt I studied crystal gazing and here I am. Great! l.et's see how good you are. l still want my fortune told. Sit nearer, Dotty, and look into the crystal. What do you see? Nothing! You don lt? l can see a large, white building, trees, water and a group of children. Kitty, it must be Gray t'ourt. It is. 1 see tlarmela. She is leading cheers at pep meeting, and Joanne Rose is singing her class song. Now I see a teacher coming down the stairs. lt is a teacher and yet it looks like June Melville. It is June. She is the Latin Teacher. Oh, Kitty, how odd. Remember we used to wonder what June would do in the future? Go on!,' 1 see another teacherg it must be Miss Blockburger, she is in a gym outfit. l see her more plainly now. No, it isn't Miss Blockburger. Come 011, Kitty, don't keep me guessing, who is it? l'm not sure: wait, I have to concentrate more deeply. Ah, l see her now. l know who it is. XVl1o ? tt Betty Gordon. Go on Madame 'Adams'g this is going to be good. Now I see another large building. It is surrounded by skyscrapers, people, noise, and tratiic. lt is Macy's. Bc quiet and let me lose myself in my thoughts. I see a young lady behind the counter, she looks Very familiar. Her face is covered with a thick. white substance. lt is cold cream. She's wiping it off now. Good night!! it's' Lynn! Now the crystal shows me the inside of New York's leading beauty salon, owned by Daphnee Sylva. 23 fl iff .L ,, fy Ag, ,, ff....,f., VVe are just in time to see two of her models. Look, Barbara Schick is her model for the famous 'Sylva Hair Tonic-.' The other girl is showing the latest coiffure in linger waving. Hold your breath, room- mate, it's Gloria Steendalf' What about some of the younger girls? Gaze into the crystal and see if you can discern anything. I can see a college campus and some girls, that's all. VVhy that is Joan Kuebler, Catherine Givens and Trientje Hood. Trientje has just won the Junior Tennis Cup. Jacqueline Collins, just home from Vassar, is there, too, as a week-end guest. Wl1at about Sally, Mary Ann Barr and the rest? 't Mary Ann and Sally are studying music abroad, while Vonda and Ma1'y Alice are just traveling around. Virginia Schick is specializing in algebra at the college where Aimee is the Junior Instructor. Janet Morosolt and Patricia Grubb are studying botony there also. Let's stop, I 'm tired. Not now, Kitty, this is too interesting. What else can you see? The crystal is clouded, wait a second. I can see Jane Huszagh. She has just been elected president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She has also established a wonderful hospital for dogs and cats. Lucille Shine is head doctor, a11d Peggy Dodge is head nurse. V What about Sophie? Is she in the crystal? The crystal takes me to a foreign land, where yellow-skinned natives go about their daily work. It is China. In o11e of the rickshas I see Sophie with her missionary husband doing their daily rounds. t'By the day, Dot, how did you like your lunch? It was delicious, Kitty, some of the best food I have tasted in a long time. VVhy? The dessert is one of Vivian Faulkner's famous recipes. She gives radio talks every morning. How interesting, I'll have to tune in. Look, the crystal is changing and I can see a broadcasting station. Beatrice Nimick has just finished one of her travel talks and Emmy Lou is about to entertain her audience with her songs, assisted by the Radio Twins, none other than the Barrett Sisters. I always knew those girls would make good. How thrilling! Can you see anything exciting in store for me? HI can see that you are going to attend one of the greatest per- formances to be given this season. Adele Spalletta is the directress of a new version of the play, 'Uncle Tom's Cabinj Topsy and Eva are to 77 79 24 I v I fl L L be played by Betsy and Patsy Leavitt. The gorgeous settings will be designed by Virginia Reiner. After the play the famous dance team composed of the Hercks, who are under the supervision of that noted dancing instructor, Lou Mathews, will interpret the music composed by Dolly Rouse. Following that, I see a great singer, one who has won fame recently, Martha Savage. The master of ceremonies is to be that juvenile actor, Lansing Holden. I see among the audience Miss Blossom Rogers, the celebrated aviatrixg Senorita Lydia Ramirez, the famous Mexican actress, a noted eye doctor, Barbara Stephens, and one of the leaders of the social world, our Florence Nimick. Our younger set will be represented by Elizabeth Speed, Marie Wilder' and Elizabeth Henderson, debutantes of last month. I see also that da1'k, fascinating young lady, Miss Diane Pitman. Up front I see a special box reserved for the holder of the Woman's National Duck Shooting Championship, Miss Marjorie Burrelle. Mary Parmenter is going to cover this per- formance for the newspaper, being the reporter of the day, and Mar- guerite Sylva, the outstanding dramatic critic, will also be present. You look tired out, Kitty, but please tell me some more about the Gray Court girls. t'l'll tell you about our famous political friends in Wi1SlllIlgt0I1. Margaret Parry has been elected Congresswoman from Connecticut, and Jean Spalletta is a member of the Cabinet. I see also that Jean Parry is the Secretary to the President of the United States Bank. Gladys IVeller is leading a happy married life and living in Virginia. Dotty Malatesta is assistant to Mrs. Abell and Lois McIntyre is posing for Pepsodent. Little Dorothea NVoodling is June Melville's outstand- ing Latin pupil, and I see Marjorie Fox, who has just returned from Mexico. Betsy Statford is doing such great work in history that she plans to major i11 that subject when she goes to college. My! Kitty, how time has changed us. And you, what are your plans? Have you given up your ambition to make the Olympic swim- ming team?l' 'tlndeed not! After this month I will have made enough money to give up my work here and go out to California to start training again with my team. This was done for a pastime and also for a little extra money. These two friends give us the courage to act on a sudden hunch that our services are needed by another and they make our feet climb and our hands cling when we feel sure that we are slipping. Everyone knows when Pep enters the room and is glad. School Spirit is more quiet though loved as dearly as Pep and so the two working together, make a wonderful pair. Miss Gray took the Seniors down to 'Wash- ington Urossing, Pa., to the Old Ferry Inn, where we had dinner. Wlizlt a beautiful spot and what a wonderful ride down and back. Un our way back we stopped in Flemington, N. J., to visit the Fulper Pottery, a most interesting place. Before we quite reached home we ran into a well developed thunderstorm, but even it did not damp our spirits, only our clothing. It was a day that shall remain forever in our memories. May 24-Final exams. Much gloom till after next Monday. June 1-Commencement is really over. Vtle thought it would never come, and now the time has seemed actually short since we began to dream of it.
