They had the ' ' ' ' lx 'ful iilot whose kindness and good foltune ot' havuig .1 wont 11' 1 , courage gave them confidence to go on with the tiight. At first they were rather dizzy and frightened when they thought of the great height to which they were to soar, but eaeh day, as they went a little higher and learned more of the subjeets from their many Capable lI1Sf1'l1Ct01'S, they took up their work with increased determina- tion and zest, and thought laughingly of the tln-ills and frigzghts they had had. They looked forward with joy to the time when they would be able to get out and try their own wings, and yet with re,fJ,1'et-when they must leave behind them the wonderful friends whom they had made. After eight months of fun illltl work, the time came for their final flight. They elimbed into their stauneh little crafts, bade farewell to everyone, and with a sigh for the past and smile for the future, iiew up into the sky, taking with the-m memories of diffieulties overcome under the guiding' hands of the pilot, tfllld of the happiness and pleasure which had come to them. 9 f x X ,X .. It is 1'llllllll0Ilt'l'lllt'l1f, in a little comitry school, and the scholars are presenting a little playlet for the benefit of the visitors. Fond mothers are to be seen rushing wildly about with odd shaped packages, which are costmnes run up at the last minute onthe old family sewing machine. In the little cloak-room, which serves as a dressing room, there are at least ten too many people. ln fact, one more could not possibly be squeezed in. Little Sally Burke has developed a frightful case of stage fright, and has retired to a corner to weep despairingly, while the mother and the harassed teacher do their best to quiet her. A voice plaintively declares that there aren't any pins to be had for the love of money, and she knows she brought at least one hundred with her. Miss Thompson, who spent a winter in the city, a11d knows how these things are done is busily occupied in liberally smearing grease paint on three gangling boys, representing Porthos, Athos, tllltl D'Artag- nan. Porthos makes a grimace with his ugly freckled face a.nd says, f'Never did like shows, and he wishes the old audience would walk out on this one. Three-quarters of an hour after the appointed time the curtain opens hesitatingly, aided from the back by invisible hands. The scene discloses a rather white-faced, scared-looking child lying in the corner asleep. From the wings a saccharine voice announces that this is Sarah Crewe asleep in her garret room, dreaming of her friends in story-book land. llowever, Sarah is lying on a thumb tack a11d soon discovers this. After the excitement subsides, the chara.cters appear and each in his or her turn chants a recitation of interminable length and dullness. A tired farmer, sitting near the door, manages to escape his wife's vigilant eye long enough to slip outside for a. smoke on his old corn cob, which is truly a friend in need. Several babies grow restless, sitting still so long in the stulfy room and broadcast their displeasure vigorously. On the stage, the characters still drag on. A bit of relief is introduced, when a miniature 'Bo-I ecp' is struct speechless at the sight of her audience, and in spite of numerous, insistent 6 1,9 1 promptings by the saccharine voice, finally is forced to leave the stage without having opened her mouth. At last Sarah awakes to iind it all a dream. More like a nightmare says a sotto voce in the audience. The curtain draws closed, falteringly, and to the relief of all concerned, the theatricals are over for another year. ANN Biufiwi-zu. 40 r' I I- A' ' f A. QW ' nl , Qim i.. The moments of anxious waiting seemed as years. A voice announced, Miss Sheila Streton, the worldis youngest and most renowned lion-tanier, will entertain you with a few of her most marvelous feats. CHAPTER III A beautiful, auburn-haired young girl walked with sinuous grace to the' Lion cage, opened the door and stepped fearlessly in, facing them. Johnny sprang to his feet, murmuring 'tls that Sheila, the little dark-eyed, freckled face? Sit down! sit down there in front! was shouted from many quarters. For five ,minutes or more the audience sat spell-bound at the daring of her act. The lions, all but o11e, responded as if there was magic in her voice, and in the slender whip, which she handled with such grace and daring. Suddenly, one lion, the largest and most powerfully built, refused to act. Her urging was unheeded. lle began to growl, hit at her with his powerful paw, then with a roar he sprang forward and knocked the whip from her hand! Sheila uttered a. piercing cry. The audience rose to its feet! Johnny had dashed through the crowd, seized a pitch-fork from a clown hesitating at the door, and dashed into the cage. The girl still facing the beasts, backed toward the door and escaped. The enraged animal sprang upon the sharp prongs. A. terrific struggle-man and the beast seemed a tangled mass. H Several shots in quick succession rang through the tent. Johnny was dragged unconscious from the floor of the cage, and in a short second the door elanged, was locked, and the roaring of the lions became terrific -excited by the sight of blood. The audience, panic-stricken,.had fled out into the night. Sheila and Johnny pass hand in hand through the entrance, the door closes behind the two, who once faced death together in the cage of infuriated lions. FRANCES Rnxvns. AN OLD FASHIONED FIREPLACE Y flR.ANIJFA'l'IIER lives in an ivy-covered manor house in Kent, England, where I visited him during the past fall and winter. The huge fireplace in the ancestral hall, with its projecting hood and quaint settees on either side, had a peculiar fascination for me, especially when the helmets, bucklers, lances, and suits of mail east weird, gloomy shadows, while the logs were burning and the sparks flying upward. I felt as a princess in a fortified castle. And while in this mood, one chill autumn evening, I asked grandfather to tell mea family legend -that may have been told by W0l'll of mouth fl'0lll generation to generation. This is his story :-Once during the eleventh century, when wicked John reigned, Lord Alwyn and his family lived in this castle. Ever searching for a treasure that his great, gl'011t uncle had hidden within its walls, cast a shadow over his life and that of his wife and children. The Lord had become a monomaniae upon the subject, making himself and those around him restless and unhappy. One of his nieces, Beat-rice, arrived very unexpectedly one winter night. As she entered her room she asked why a portion of the wall had been torn down, and heard for the first flllll+6'lll1ltll'Il treasure. The next morning, Beatrice, being full of life and very inquisitive, decided to ask her cousins to join her in a search-party', excluding grownups. They dashed into the cellar, the attic, visited all unfrequeuted quarters, and the only result looked as if a. cyclone had swept through the explored regions. ' After two weeks, Beatrice decided to cease the quest, to rest and read. Selecting a book within her reach, she noticed sticking to the back of it, an old discolored paper. This she opened and read: Up two sta.irs, behind the pines, in the bedstead, you will find a treasure very rare! 56 ii 4. Q . ,.,, an -Q. ' 'iii sh. f. ft fi.-fe Ext-itedly she ran outdoors toward the pine trees, hut knowing there eoulcl not he stairs or a hedstead in the woods, returned and sat down in the hall. Iler unele passed through and she showed him the paper. After tl0Cl1lll01'lIl,fI it, he renieinhered that l'or lntnrlreds ot' years there had heen two riehly carved old heds in the attie. Une had been hnrued when he was a very small hoyg and the other, due to its rare wood and exquisite workinanship, his g.g'rainlfutlier had eonverted into the inantel-piece, before which they were now standing. IIe examined it with a powerful iuagnifying glass. There was a deep horizontal groove, and above it was earved ill seene ol' pine trees, with a beautiful lawn i11 front. Leading up to the first terraee were two steps! The treasure was found! A hidden spring was tonehed,-a eompartinenti was discovered-filled with gems of the greatest: value! Joy l't'lQ,'IlCtl, for Lord Alwyn was not as wealthy as he had been during' his father's lifetime. The little orphan, Reatriee, was given one- fourthp of the treasure trove! In less than an hour-sixty tiny minutes-she had heeome an heiress. So you see, girls, it soinetiines pays to he inquisitive! Hover: Brnm-1. 'fi.ffi,' THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON ICORGIC WASHINGTON was born in the year of 1732 in Virginia. When he was a little boy he went to Mr. lIobby's school in Virginia, where he drilled some of the little boys. George became very much interested in the life of a soldier. One day George Washington said to himself, I am going to try to break my 1nother's wild colt. So he took the colt out of the stable and began to ride on it, but almost before he got on, the colt 1'an against the fence and fell down with a broken neck, which made George feel very sorry. When George was a young man he learned to survey. Lord Fairfax at that time owned very much land around the Blue Ridge Mountains, so he called the young surveyor, George Washington, to survey his land. While Washington was on his surveying trip, he slept out of doors with only a fire to keep him warm. IVhen he was a man he did many a brave thing. England, the mother country, had a parliament to make laws for America, but they didn't let any of the Americans be in the parliament. The English people taxed the Americans on everything they sent over to America. One day the Americans heard that an Einglish boat was headed for Boston with a cargo of tea. When the tea got to Boston, some of the men that lived there emptied thc tea overboard. That was called The Boston Tea Party. Finally the taxes became so great that they started war. The first battle was fought at Lexington, which the Americans won. Georgie lVashington was general over all the American troops. General Washington fought very bravely illlfl bore many hardships. The English general was Poi-nwallis. Washington thought that if he could capture the fine army that Cornwallis was at the head of in Virginia, he could tinish the war. Un his way to Virginia he visited his house for the first time in six years. 4 I-Ie went on to Virginia. and captured the English army. Cornwallis knew now that the Americans had him all surrounded, so f'ornwa.llis surrendered to General Washington. After the war Washington returned to his home in Mount Vernon. Some time after the war, the United States seemed to break into thirteen pieces, so the people decided to elect a president. In 1789, the 30th of April, General Washington was elected the first President of the United States. llc was elected for the second term, but 1'0fllS0tl to serve for the third term. President lYashington died in 1799 at Mount Vernon. It is wonder- ful to think that a brave, honest, true, kind-hearted, loyal general, like George lVashington, should have been chosen the first President of the United States. TENNIS The Porter Tennis Cups presented by our Miss Porter and oiered to the winning team of the Tennis Tournanients, have been greatly ad- mired and longed for. The Upper School Tournainent of Singles was won by Mona Jarrett who is a Gold but the Grays still have a chance to sec their name on the cup for on account of weather conditions the Doubles have not been iinished. The Lower School Porter Cup was won by thc Gold Team since the Lower School Tournament of Singles was won by Royce Budge who is a Gold and also Royce Budge ably helped by Barbara Colton, another Gold, won the Doubles. The Gold Team may well feel proud of these two players who fought their way to victory for their team. The Grays played well and certainly showed the true Gray Court spirit even in the face of defeat. I LETTER WINNERS FOR 1927'28 Mona Jarrett-fGoldj-Winner of a G for Upper School Tennis Singles.
