I knew that he had been connected with the H Bomb plant down in Aiken, South Carolina but I had understood that it had been in the capacity of private secretary For several years, however, I had lost trace of him I leaned from the window and called for a paper Unfoldlng lt quickly this is what I saw joel Wallace Invents H A Fngzne to Power Rockets Mowng betueen the Plants Wallace Now Recognrzed as Greatest Sznce Edzson See Wallace Tomgbt on Telewson The article covered practically the entire front page joel s invention was a wonderful step in the scientific WO1'ld As my eyewandered 0n,I caught the date of the paper the 27th of May There was something strangely familiar about that date What was it? Then suddenly If came to me today was the tenth anniversary of our graduation from old Gray CourtOvv1ngs It was hard to realize that ten years had really passed slnce that eventful day I also realized that tonight the class of 51 was havlng the reunion which I had been unable to attend due to the illness of my husband A praver rose to 'ny lips that joel had attenoed and would bring them in on his program I could hardlv wait for the hour to arrive so that I might tune ln At the appointed time I began turning the dials reen, wondering which of my classmates would be the first to appear At first the image upon the screen was very faint and rather blurred, but I as turned the dial a little more the image of a great opera house, brillrantlv lighted, appeared upon the screen A flashing electric sign above the building told me that this was the Nletropolitan Opera House Then a smaller sign appeared upon which were these words First Appearance rn Arnerrca of Martha Cooley the Vvorld s Greatest Pzamst just then I caught a glimpse of a beautiful suite in one of 'Nlew York s most famous as well as most expensive hotels A beautiful woman was seated at the dressing table with her back to m The rooms were filled with flowers and a French Xlald was arranging the womans hair just as she turned her head, I saw that it was Martha dressing for her appearance at the Opera House The next scene showed me Iris Simpson seated at a desk ln a luxurious private office On her desk was a picture of her husband and three child ren taken in their Gulf Coast home just now she was dictating rapidly to her secretary and the sign door told me that she was Editor in Chief of one of New York s daily papers Before the scene faded I noticed also on her desk, a copy of her latest novtl The next scene was of a large hospital in Chicago A group of girls in nurses uniforms stood in the center of a room talking and laughing Io Ann Cook vvas telling the others something very funny about her tvun boys or her movie actor hus band, Carl Rowe o Ann was voted Miss H1 Miss our Senior year, and none of us ever be lreved that she would complete her nursing course Much to my surprise a courtroom now appeared upon the screen The trail was evidently a famous one , for the room was crowded Yes, I recognized now that this was the United States Supreme Court in session As I glanced at the judges, whom shouldl recognize as one of them but Gene Cothran I had known for S0mEIlmC that Gene was considered the States best known criminal lawyer, but I had not heard that he had been made judge I almost screamed as an aeroplane doing a tail spin appeared upon the screen After the tail spin, a loop the loop, then a nosedlve, and many other daring stunts were performed I wondered which of my classmates could be this daring avia or Presently the plane glided smoothly to the ground and as the aviator stepped out, I recognized Mlldred Butler She had just completed a tour of I:,urope where she had performed before Klngs and Princes, and was generally acceded to be the most daring and skillful woman aviator in the world The next scene was in China Who of my classmates could be ln this far away land? As I looked a door of a rather large house opened and a small woman in American dress stepped out A Coolle came up with a yinrikisha into which the woman stepped and was rolled slowly away As she passed through the streets she received much attent1on and the natives all seemed to love her As the jmrikisha stopped before a beautiful little house with a mass of chrysanthemums blooming in the yard and the woman stepped dovvn, I recognized the most influential missionaries in this great land Then the Oriental scene changed and I was back again in America' As I looked, I saw a modern ranch tvpe tourlst home in Texas It was the most attractive I had ever seen and seemed to be very prosperous with the No Vacancy sign swinging in the western winds I was wondering who could ovvn this charming place when Dora Woods and her husband came to the door I couldn t believe Dora would stray so far from old Carolina Now the scene shifted again and I saw a group of men and women seated around a conference table I heard the speaker call for a report from the Chairman of the Nledical Research Department The one who responded to this imposing title was our old class president, Richard Edwards He is now Dr Edwards of ohns Hopkins Hospital H has just discovered a formula for making people grow tall overnight The screen became blank and I realized that I had had a glimpse into the life of each and every one of the class of 51 Truly the mventlons of man and of women, too, are marvelous I ROPHTT Fu a B Hughes . . . .
