In this age of realism, these three words have struck a cord of universal assent in the hearts of Americans. As you walk along the pathway of life you begin to underf stand and use the knowledge that you gained during your years in high school. Each class participated as a whole to set its own individual rec-ord. They were made in scholastic ability as well as athletic ability and each organization tried its very best to help set and maintain these records. Wlien you walk along life's highway you will learn to under' stand and apply the power of reason your education gave you. ln this age when education is so greatly stressed you should learn to the extent of your ability to reach your highest ambitions. J 1qJmin13LZ'fmZ'i0n Each year as more records are made .and broken, who are the people responsible for these fantastic achievements? They are the group that .are known in our society as teachers. Teachers are responsible for the wellfequipped students of Graveraet. They .are there to teach stu' dents to become useful citizens so that our country will remain a strong and united nation. Cur country could not do without the teach' ers who serve not only as instructors but as guides and counselors every day of every year. They are as indispensable as the President and Congress of our United States. ,f l, If XX 'QS' T7 ll me-'6 6 ,..:..-Q A S 9 M -mn: -,,,...'v MN .53 K 'fi' Sf 4 Pam-of .A-1 We wiki 131+ Good Education To Progress ln ihe I959-60 school year, Graveraei had a 'iofal of 45 ieachers on ihe faculfy. The laughing, happy, eager, but slightly ref luctant seniors took their places as the upper class of Graveraet High School on August 31, 1959. Another class of dignified seniors was .alxxut to set new records for the history of Gnaveraet. After chatting with old teachers and friends and meeting new ones, they settled down to the intricacies of their class. They have now completed their high school years and during these years they have laid the foundation for their lives and chanacter. The high school years may pass away but they will not and can' not be forgotten. The seniors, daring to achieve new records, realize they .are their -own builders but the school is the foundation on which they build their future lives and hopes. ff 20 XQQSX Y' N A 5,5 ' ' X. This is student life at Graveraet. It is not recorded or filed. In the next few pages you will see just what has gone on among the students this year. It has been a period of hilarious fun and excitf ing surprises. Each class offers different challenges and each student has made school more exciting by meeting these challenges and adjusting to them with outstandf ing ease. We all agree that high school is not easy, but we have learned that it can be fun. How have we gain' ed this knowledge? Through our teachers who try, untiringly, each year to instill in us an education that will be of value to us during the rest -of -our lives. The instructors have set records that will not be broken in many years to come. 4 f l X T W Tl X X X X Q X X of a c g 42 'Nw ga 2 L A. flaw. if ,Xml i . Av: ..,,, ia . Sports go with rec' ords and Graveraet has set some mighty big ones. Sports, how We enjoy them! How much fun to play and watch! On the agenda for Graveraet this year was football, basketball, judo, track, baseball, tennis, and cheerfleading. We won't forget all the wonder' ful times we had at the games, not always participatf ing but being there and cheering the teams on to vicf tory. Athletics must play an important role in our everyday life as we live at a faster rate of speed. We must be conditioned to meet the harsh and somef times heartless ways of life that we are subjected to. Everyone tried his best to make this a memorable year in the history of Graveraet. f. The squad won all the nmjor meets that they entered which tops all efforts in previous years. Much of the success of an track team depends upon the depth in the various events. We ,provided enough competition in the different evetnts which gave us good depth and in turn earned us many places. VYe've always l'elt that if you cun't break a record, make the fellow in front of you break as record. Coach llart was also in charge ot' the seven boys who entered the U, P. high school cross country meet last October. The team took second pliwe while competing with two other schools. The only losses that the Reds suffered were to Neguunee and Manistique QU. P. Champsi and these two defeats were hy a total of 4 points. Realizing that his athletes played fine foothall throughout- the year l'owc.h Hart asserted, Naturally the success of the sqmul was due to the seniors. They want- ed to excel and they did just that. Also many of the squad members made im- provements in their ability. With these two ingredients combined, a winning hall club can he established. Eugene Belmore, sparkplllg' ca,ptni.n for t-he Redmen, made first string on the All- U. P. team and quarterback Terry Ny- quist made second string. To he select- ed on this f98.Ill is one of the highest hon- ors a U. With the i959 football season making history a typical question is arising among Redmen fans wherever they are gathered. The inquiry states, Will we have a good team next year? The answer to this question depends upon a lot ot factors but especially upon the attitude of the team. It they have a strong desire to win and truly want to excel then the results will be success. Giving his views on next tall, Coach Bill Hart stated, ln regards to 'Football next year we may have a rebuilding job with our line: although we do have some key men return- ing in the backtield. The success ot next year's team will probably be due to how well the underclassmen adapt them- selves to varsity football. 76 Racking up JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL - I959 Mnrqucttc .... , .,...... .,,.,, l 4 Nvgwumcc ,,,,,..,, 7 Murqm-lic . . , ,, 32 Nt-wha-rry .,,. 0 lutll'llll1'ff1' ., ,,,,., H20 Munising . ,, 0 Murqucttc ., .,.,, 26 lshpi-ming .,,, ....... 1 3 Mai-qucttc . ,..,. 20 Escanaba ,,., 6 lllnirqucttc .. ,..,,A I4 lshpcmini: .. ,,,, 7 nl2I.lI'lllll't11' ..,.,,,,,,, ......, J! 0 Munistiquc ,.,,.,,, ,..,,,,, l 9 I46 poinls during lhe year pro- 'l'h i rd Row: Asst. Atter ending their regular season schedule with a 9-4 mark, the Redmen reserve basketball squad went into the G.L.C. tournament as un- derdogs and came out as champions. The team, coached by Warren Wilson, used the ingredients of desire and a little extra ettort which in the end paid ott in tribute. It was the second time in three years that a Marquette iunior varsity had captured the crown. The only other time that this teat had been matched was in l958 when that year's reserve team ended their season with a I5-3 record and the B-team championship. Forwards Gene Pearson and Curt Vandenboom were selected by their teammates as co-captains, and most valuable player John Frazier was high point maker with 246 points. Freshman coach Lou Taccolini, who has been turning out tine basketball prospects since join- ing our coaching statt in I957, led the 59-60 trosh team to a tine season record ot 8 wins and one loss. The squad, who elected Roger Zettle as captain and top scorer Dennis Chenail as most valuable player, displayed some real tine basket- ball during the year and should be valuable ma- terial when they iump into varsity shoes. l -2I'ISHMAN BASKlCTBAL,l.
