0lll CHO0L Eight LOWLY, in the late twenties, there rose from the old circus grounds of Nicetown a stately Gothic building, which stood lovely but lifeless until a day in early Seutember, 1927, when the iirst student body entered its si- lent halls and changed them to flowing streams of youth. Since then, in the almost fourteen years which have passed, many students have passed through the building, giving life to it and learning of life in return. Beautiful as the school was, the students soon acted to make their surroundings more pleasant by forming a Combined Class lfund, to which all classes have contributed. The nucleus of stu- dent activity has been the Stu- dents Association, directed by Mrs. Marion Wallace. Our news- paper. The Spotlight. known as the eyes and cars of the school, made its debut December 19, 1927, and has continued to keep its readers well informed. First, under the principalship of Mr. .l. Elwood Calhoun and then. under that of Dr. E. Carl VVerner, the school has educated and sent into the world many good American citizens.

'I'o rin: Class or Jrsn. 1941: Moclcrn cducational philosophy holds to thc hclicf that education in itsclf is lifc and is not to hc thought of mcrcly as prcparation for lifc. ln past mlccadcs wc thought of the school only as a placc whcrc onc acquircrl thc ncccssary skills and kmnvlcclgcs to mcct thc nccfls of lifc in thc futurc. 'l'hc cmphasis was vcry nmch on prcp- aration for somcthing that was to comc. Although this is still a vcry propcr function of thc school, wc now havc a lnuch hroaclcr conccpt of thc pur- poscs of ctlucation. lf crlncation in itsclf is lifc, thcn thc school must proviclc thc mcans and thc sctting for pupils to livc it richly and fully. 'l'his wc try to clo. ln a largc mctropolitan high school such as thc Simon tlratz lligh School thcrc arc many contacts and cxpcri- cuccs which rcsult in pupil growth and tlcvclopmcnt. l lducational and vocational ncclls arc mct in thc class- room ancl shop: social and rccrra- tional opportunitics arc provitlccl in thc many activitics of thc stuzlcnts association, thc athlctic field. and thc cluh room: cultural anal acsthctic ap- prcciations arc cnjoyccl through thc work in art, music, and clramatics. ln such an cnvironmcnt thc pupil not only prcparcs for thc futurc but livcs a rich and full lift- in thc prcscnt. l hopc that your lifc in our school has mcant all this to you and that your school cxpcricnccs havc strcngrths cnctl you for thc ycars which lic ahcaxl.
