To bring back i to you, no matter where or what you may be, poignant memories of the you of yesteryear. I am a souvenir of three full years of your life, some day to be indistinct in retrospect if not for me. I am the path that leads back to the fond recollection of friendships, work, and play at Simon Gratz. IIEIIIU TIO E RAISE our cup to our lips and say, To life --and to the full- ness thereof-to its achievements and disappointments, its lasting friendships and disheartening conflicts, its joy in the midst of surrounding sorrow, its wide opportunities requiring cease- less struggle, its hates and prejudices, its truth and faith. Again--to life-and to all the good and accompanying evil it has brought and to the good it will bring. So in this recording, born at a time of world upheaval, we aflirm our faith in the completeness and beauty of being. p 0 REGARD life as a journey is an old concept, yet i it is a good one, for we are ever traveling from the past, through the present, to the future. We are always passing wayside stations that indicate a section of the journey done. Such a landmark is our graduation, it indicates for us the end of one itinerary, the begin- ning of a new. From our little trip through high school, we may perceive the main outlines of the land- i scape that will greet us later. Here we have known oc. attempts that have ended in disappointments, ambi- tions that were never fulfilled, and we will know them again. Yet the whole of our school experience was good, for difficulties were lost in daily routine and passed into the hope for the morrow, and work became fun when shared. This, not our diplomas, means school to us. Later we shall learn again that To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and true success is to labor. SCIIUUL 0lll CHO0L Eight LOWLY, in the late twenties, there rose from the old circus grounds of Nicetown a stately Gothic building, which stood lovely but lifeless until a day in early Seutember, 1927, when the iirst student body entered its si- lent halls and changed them to flowing streams of youth. Since then, in the almost fourteen years which have passed, many students have passed through the building, giving life to it and learning of life in return. Beautiful as the school was, the students soon acted to make their surroundings more pleasant by forming a Combined Class lfund, to which all classes have contributed. The nucleus of stu- dent activity has been the Stu- dents Association, directed by Mrs. Marion Wallace. Our news- paper. The Spotlight. known as the eyes and cars of the school, made its debut December 19, 1927, and has continued to keep its readers well informed. First, under the principalship of Mr. .l. Elwood Calhoun and then. under that of Dr. E. Carl VVerner, the school has educated and sent into the world many good American citizens. 'I'o rin: Class or Jrsn. 1941: Moclcrn cducational philosophy holds to thc hclicf that education in itsclf is lifc and is not to hc thought of mcrcly as prcparation for lifc. ln past mlccadcs wc thought of the school only as a placc whcrc onc acquircrl thc ncccssary skills and kmnvlcclgcs to mcct thc nccfls of lifc in thc futurc. 'l'hc cmphasis was vcry nmch on prcp- aration for somcthing that was to comc. Although this is still a vcry propcr function of thc school, wc now havc a lnuch hroaclcr conccpt of thc pur- poscs of ctlucation. lf crlncation in itsclf is lifc, thcn thc school must proviclc thc mcans and thc sctting for pupils to livc it richly and fully. 'l'his wc try to clo. ln a largc mctropolitan high school such as thc Simon tlratz lligh School thcrc arc many contacts and cxpcri- cuccs which rcsult in pupil growth and tlcvclopmcnt. l lducational and vocational ncclls arc mct in thc class- room ancl shop: social and rccrra- tional opportunitics arc provitlccl in thc many activitics of thc stuzlcnts association, thc athlctic field. and thc cluh room: cultural anal acsthctic ap- prcciations arc cnjoyccl through thc work in art, music, and clramatics. ln such an cnvironmcnt thc pupil not only prcparcs for thc futurc but livcs a rich and full lift- in thc prcscnt. l hopc that your lifc in our school has mcant all this to you and that your school cxpcricnccs havc strcngrths cnctl you for thc ycars which lic ahcaxl. ' REAT universal achievements all men remember, but personal accomplishments, though apparently insig- nificant, bring genuine satisfaction and a sense of life fulfilled. We conquer a fear, a hate--restrain an impulse, a temptation-share a joy, a misfortune -and life is vivifiedg we go down in defeat before our shortcomings, our adversaries-fail in accom- plishments, in purposes-attempt the possible and impossible-yet a sense of well-being remains. We have been about the business of living. We have been truly active. This activity rounds our life-shapes it-gives it personality-directs its pur- pose-sets its pattern-makes it discernible to our fellowman. He says we have been about our duty and expects our continuance of such activity. Here, at school, we have known this life and learned the truth of Maeterlinck's words: Activity and duty are not to be found at the roadside. One must await them on the threshold, ready to bid them enter at the moment of passing, and they pass every day. ACTIVITIES l Mus. Through- out life, as in these past three years, close contact with others will continue to exert its influence on your further development and later bring tolerance of the different points of view and true appreciation of com- rades. In time, too, youth will be overcome by age, frivolity, by sedatenessg nevertheless, some of what is now you will live in the hearts of five hundred others who will cherish the memory of gay companionship. No shouts of joy wel- comed it, and no paternal hand distributed cigars sheepishly. Who, then, could proph- esy the eminent duties of life at Gratz that it was to fulfill? 26-411 plunged into the school's routine and endeavored to gain a worthy position in the austere procession of its twenty-five prede- cessors, with Ruth Rosenberg and Lee Sacks as our 9A and 9B representatives to the Sen- ate respectively. With size determining power and ability, 26-1111 was greatly enhanced by a tremendous influx of students in September, 1938. In the Senate, Herbert Rogove represented the group at our annex in Dobbins Vocational School, and Ruth Dunn was the voice of those in the Gratz building. During the latter half of that year, William Sharps and Geraldine Ginsberg were our senators from the annex and Gratz buildings, respectively. In September, 1939, with all of us at Gratz, 26-1141 was elevated to the imposing position of Junior Class of Gratz High, with THE LIFE 0F the privilege of electing two senators, Betty Itsynson and Herbert Rogove. During this semester Mr. Anders, who carried an imma- ture class over its first difficulties, relin- quished guardianship of 26-41 to Mr. Milton Brooks, who patiently guided it through the trying adolescent period. As 11B's we elected Betty Itsynson and Rogove to the bench, Ruth Dunn and Wil- liam Sharps, to the Senateg our C-class ofii- cers were, president, Betty Thompson, and secretary, Toni Pistilli. Our social career was launched with the C-class outing in May at Chestnut Hill Spur, where burnt frankfurters and marshmallows with baseball and other games made that oc- casion one of great mirth. Our indoor success, the Junior Jump, will probably be best remembered for the moment when Ruth Dunn was crowned May Queen by Senator William Sharps, amid the ap- plause of the rollicking dancers. Oh, for the life of a senior! With sena- tors, Irene Merkle and Harold Gottlieb, judges, Robert Kline and Leona Kessler, and vice-presidents, Ruth Dunn and Ben Burnley, representing 26-1111 in the Students Associa- W Z CLAS 26-41 tion, we elected Betty Thompson, Stella Rosi- ecki, Tony Pistilli, and Jean Yerkes as our class officers. In mid-October the largest group to represent Gratz at Washington em- barked for a day of thrills, ceremony, and gaiety. Sensing the vital pulse of our Amer- ican democracy beating, we were awed by the significance of this noble part of our Ameri- can heritage. Ghosts and skeletons captured the spirit of the occasion during our Jinx .lump on Friday, December thirteenth, and made it truly a jinx. Though the juke-box re- fused to play, who can deny that fun pre- vailed. Does it seem credible that those child-like pupils of four years ago are the almost ma- ture young ladies and gentlemen of our A- class? Yes, 26-Al-1 has grown up! In March, 26-41's dance took the form of the S Jrin f S nee, a fav s not in our class . I diary. The Senior Prom-magical words possess- ing the power of fairy god-mother to create a Cinderella of each girl attending and a Prince Charming of each escort. May 23rd was the date and Brookline Country Club the setting. Uh, lovely night, never to be for- gotten! Bedecked in their Alma Mater's colors, 26-A1-l's members bade their high school class- rooms adieu. With a final flourish they per- formed admirably in a highly humorous Senior Day program in the Auditorium. Till we meet again-the 26-4-1 banquet- its solcmnity, its praise and thanks for all that was given so freely in the past-its promises for a future of achievements and struggles-its farewclls, not good-byes-till we meet again. It was a warm June night in I9-Ll-the class of 26--111 had reached maturity-the graduating ceremonies were proceeding- soon they were concluded-then the reces- sional. We realize suddenly that this is not a recession but a procession into the future. A commencement-of a new life. Yes. the end of class 26-1111, but as a pod that bursts and releases its seeds to he scattered and start anew, so does our class release the in- dividual members to create for themselves their world. FIVE-FOOT FEMMES SIX-FOOTERS RUTH IJVNN GEORGE BROWN Chairman Chairman Eiglltwsix y HI 'l'0llY FUR flllll GRA IICHILIIRE HILE we were engrossed in our senior activi- ties, the morning headlines from time to time startled us with announcements of events that we knew our grandchildren would some day study in history assignments. They, then, may wonder at us and our times, to satisfy that wonder even slightly, from this page, we of the present speak to them of the future. Certainly the European war had us interested, guessing, and troubled, for the battlefields were not, as once, isolated areas but the greater part of Europe, traversed at unexpected speeds with mech- anized divisions. Air armadas transported troops and in battle made no distinction between civilian and soldier but poured destruction and death into city streets, welding inhabitants into a great civil- ian army. This type of warfare, new for our day, spread in our senior year to the Balkans. Once more we heard of fighting at Thermopylae and of Greeks, warring on the plains of Marathong but this time no Pheidippides carried to Athens the message, Rejoice, we conquer! Greece became just another conquered nation, and the war went swaying along the northern edge of the Sahara and into the lands made dear to us by the Arabian Nights and the Bible, as Hitler moved toward Suez. Meantime, we of the United States were also shattering traditions. We embarked on a pro- gram of national and hemisphere defense. Hold- ers of the historically important number, 158, were the first conscripts in America's first peace-time draft. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected our first third-term president, his defeated Republi- can opponent, Wendell L. Willkie, after pleading for national unity, flew to England, carrying a personal message from our president to the Eng- lish king. We girded ourselves for mass production, and business and industry revived, but under the leadership of the CIO and AFL so did the strikes, which were mediated by the National Labor Re- lations Board. We moved from our former policy of neutrality to an attitude of all-out aid to Britain, passed the Lease-Lend Bill, number 1776, and began to say good-by to boys going to the now completed military camps for their training. There was much visiting of ofhcials up and down the Americas and across the Atlantic in the inter- ests of defense. We gave to Britain our destroy- ers and vessels seized in American harbors. As our class came to graduation, the country was dis- cussing convoying our merchant ships to British ports and trying to solve the riddle of the flight to England of one leading Nazi, Rudolph Hess. Yet we lived our usual lives, cultivated our tastes, and followed the fashions. We danced the rumba, the conga, and the tango in a spirit of fel- lowship with our South American neighbors and wore military and naval styles. With patriotic fervor we sang Irving Berlin's God Bless Amer- ica, and, at our commencement, with an equal fervor, Ballad for Americaf' The battle on the airways between BMI and ASCAP re-established Stephen Foster as America's favorite composer and his Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair as the countryis favorite song. Mickey Rooney held his owng and Mickey Mouse went cultural in Fantasia, a production by Walt Disney and Leopold Stokowskig the latter retired from the Philadelphia orchestra at the close of that season. The Pulitzer Prize that year went to There Shall Be No Nighty' for tears, to Life with Father for hilarious comedy. Mighty Hank Greenberg left the diamond for the army, but Joe Louis remained king of tfhe ring. And what were our feelings? A spirit of un- rest, of insecurity, of enjoy-life-while-we-may con- tended with a determination to see affairs through to the right conclusions-all attitudes born of our country's position between peace and war. And what of our future? Totalitarianism or democ- racy? Or something yet unknown? We could not be sure. But of this we were sure-our coun- try, the United States of America, was destined to achieve great and noble history. Eiglitvseven e OY and sorrow, laughter and tears are great educa- tors. They make life rich, they gentle it into mellow- ness and enhance human endeavor. We, class 26-41, today have known only a few of our allotted years, now, awaiting full-bloom, we are eager and willing for joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, experience and adventure, trivial or otherwise. As a violin mellows with age, so may we. When in the future we recall our school days, it may be with conflicting reactions, and it may chance that memory retains only the trifling incident while the major escapes. Our Prom may be only a song, flowers, or a blush to us, then. Of our trip to Washington, there may well remain a surge of patriotism, of pride in being Americans, but our fascination at the waiter's ability to handle a tray of coffee-filled cups on a moving train may well outlast all other impressions, for Trifles make up the happiness and misery of mortal life. Fmunms WE BEHULD THE FACE 0F N TUESDAY, October 15, 19410, the sun rose in much the usual manner for one hundred thirty and some odd million other Americans, but not so for two hundred fifty-seven Washington Expeditionersf' For 26-441 went to Washington, and a more eager, starry-eyed, expectant group never journeyed this track capital bound. Alighting on the Washington platform, we got our first glimpse of the capitol domeg and it was like 110 other arrival. No other destination could so breathtakingly inspire us with awe. We imme- diately grew in importance and proportion-chests swelled, throats contracted, hearts pounded. And perhaps for the first time we really grasped the full significance of what being a citizen of our country means. Sectioned in bus loads with guides colorfully detailing the pass- ing panorama, heads turning left, heads swinging right, we were whirled through the intricate labyrinth-the Post Office Depart- ment behind us, Treasury Department beside us, and the Depart- ment of the Interior before us. We stopped for closer scrutiny at the Capitol and the Folger Shakespearean Library. Our course took us to the highest tribunal of our land, the Supreme Court, and some of us were even fortunate enough to see the justices in session. At the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, there was money-money everywhere but not a cent to sample. Rapt and humble we looked up into the sad eyes of the Emancipator at the Lincoln Memorial- our cameras in constant action, clicking here and clicking there. From the Smithsonian Institution we went to Arlington, where we paused at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and under leaden skies laid our wreath and paid our solemn tribute. Then to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, our furthest point south, and heah, sho nuff, we dashed off souvenir postcards, merrily munching historically flavored ice cream cones. Reluctantly we took our last fieeting glance at the city, never more to be just a starred dot on the map. Homeward bound, we foot-weary pilgrims were fed a delicious meal: and songs, pranks, and mischief carried us to Philadelphia, happier, glowing, and more comprehensive that we had left it. The whole and full portent of the trip was not to be limited to that one day alone for in our mind's eye we will always relieve and recapture each colorful event and thrilling incident at the men- tion of the name-Vvashington, D. C. Ninetvfone WVAND is waved. Gratz maidens are turned to fairy Queen Tituniasg Gratz men, to majestic King Oheronsg and the night is enchanted. Puck and his company spray magic dew-like drops of allure and gaiety. All is astir and aglow under the spell of soft lights, lilting mu- sic, dancing, flowers, and color. No, not a midsummer night's dream, but our Gratz Promenade! And ours is not the green secluded woodlandg ours is the festooned shimmering terraces of the Brookline Country Club. Johnson One Hundred One :mm BULLIHIG d'1'v AC BA KETRALL HE basketeers of tl1e season of '10-'41 under the able guidance of Mr. Shegog finished tl1e season with four wins and nine losses. This record doesn't look very impressive on paperg however, on the court our team gave a much better account of themselves. Another factor to be considered in connection with the record is that three starters gradu- ated at mid-term. Even so, a surprising thing followed. Captain Solon and the boys won the next two games in a row, rising to their greatest heights in beating Ben Franklin 52-23g Solon earned honorable mention in every paper's all-public-high basketball team. Our team's defeats can be attributed to their inability to work the ball under the basket. They were forced to take too many long shots, which isn't a very wise move in the public-high league. After getting the ball downcourt the boys just didnit seem to have that extra spurt with which to swish the cords for those all important two points. On a whole, the team had a fairly good season. Reds Tabas, Campie, and Walker ably represented 26-4-1. SCHEDULE Opp. Grnt: Penn Charter .,.... ..... 4- 0 10 South Philadelphia .. ,. La Salle ,..,.,..... .,,. 2 0 18 Germantown ....... .... FUUTBALL HE football season of the fall of '4-0 cannot be classed as being Very successful, in fact, it was one of the most disastrous seasons in Gratz's history. However, we of 26-4-1 do not have to be ashamed of our team, for we were represented by a group of fellows who had more fight and spirit than a great many of the other high school teams. Against us were scored one hundred eighty-four points, while we scored only sixg however, these six points were mighty big, since they were scored against Olney while Olney was held scoreless. In this game our boys fought their hearts out, and their hard-fought game didnit go unrewarded. The one and only score of thc year was hung up by co-captain Mervin Braufman who was the outstanding star of the team and, incidentally, is a member of 26-4-1. Other players that represented 26-411 were Mc- Cutchen, Kancher, James, Hamburg, Pennick, Grinnelly, Blum, Lipshutz. Next year there will be many changes in the football system at Gratz High. For one thing there will be al new coach who will get not only more financial aid but stronger moral support from the faculty and students. SCH EDUI,l'l Opp Gllllf Bartram .. .. Frankford . .... HIS year Coach Clausen must start from scratch and attempt to build a strong baseball aggregation. Of last year's team only three men are returning. The team is being built around these three, Polowczuk, outfielderg Campie, a pitcher, and Captain Jack Levy, first baseman. Some of the raw recruits like Gawronski, a catcher, and Weiner, an outfielder, are expected to give a good account of them- selves. The team as a whole stacks up as a good fielding outfit but rather weak at the plate. Also the pitching staff is none too strong. Among those who ably represent 26-1111 were Levy, VVeiner, Gawronski, O'Neil, and Campie. One Hundred Six First: Wishnetz, Eisenberg. Meade CCaptainJ, Stern, Mm-land. Miss Bowen, Miss Muir, Mrs. Hall, Miss Logan, Miss God- frey and Mrs. Fitzgerald have given up their time to help coach the girls in the different activities. and the girls appre- ciate that fact a great deal. Regular at- tendance in cluhs, sponsored hy the Coun- cil, entitles members to five points. Class numerals are awarded to those who have earned thirty points. They must collect sixty points to he entitled to wear the S. G. g and the highest athletic distinc- tion, the Gnu is awarded to those who have earned ninety points of credit. Sonic council members are elected managers of eluhs. Another member is chosen to repre- sent them in the lntra-Club Council. a newly organized hranch of the Student Government this year. Memhers of the Couneil are also chosen to he on the Health Council. an organization of teach- ers and students, which is working to pro- mote the health of the student hody. The class leaders are chosen according to their athletic ability and willingness io cooperate. Leaders demonstrate the gym aims for the pupils, and in this way they relieve the teachers of a few hurdens. if-5. GIRLS' Pllltl' CLUB is an association of persons to promote a common object. The object of our clubs is to help us make profit- able use of our leisure time. Not only do we receive the skill required for a certain type of sport and make new acquaintances, but we also help to strengthen our own character. The skating clubs were organized this year, and they received great support. Tennis, basketball, baseball, volleyball. hockey, and swimming were continued as in the past, and each club had a success- ful season. The girls receive little publicity, but in joining these clubs they do assimilate a much needed lesson in sportsmanship. They realize that if a game isnit won fairly, there is no fun in winning. The girls work together as equals, without prejudice. If one girl isn't as skillful as the others, they take time out to teach her. These traits. namely, courage, fair play, honesty, thougbtfulness, after once being acquired, help mold their future character. The girls, without realizing it, think and act in their community as they do in their clubs and, collectively, all over the nation. These clubs help to make better Americans. Credit for its origin is given to the Phoenicians, who formed letters or symbols representative of what was important in their daily life and activi- ties. The first letter, A, represented food, Alef, an ox or rather the horns of an ox. It was made by two diagonal strokes with the apex at the bottom and crossed in the middle with a line representing the yoke. Through use, and the desire for speed in writing, this mark evolved finally by way of the Greeks and Romans to its present formation. QSee figure 1.j The letter B followed in the same way. After food came shelter, the Phoenician symbol being representative of Beth, a house. fsee figure 2.j Transportation was next in importance. The third letter, C, being representative of the head and neck of a Gimel or camel. fSee figure 3.j Doors, windows, hooks, fences, hands, palms, whips, water, fish, eyes, mouth, head, and teeth followed and were symbolized by marks. The marks in turn forming the beginnings of our alphabet. All of them the product of man's imagination, the gift of God. So today we are the heirs and assigns of all that has gone before in the way of alphabet designing and redesigning. This annual, the product of the imaginative minds of the Staff, assisted by the highly skilled artisans of the Clark Printing House, Inc., is representative of the high excellence that can be attained in this character of work, when the tools at hand are understandingly applied. The ability to bring the necessary labor and materials together to accomplish this result comes from long experience, and we offer every Staff the benefit of our years of cumulative knowledge and service gained in producing high-grade school and college annuals.
