“In September, 1958 three out of our graduating class of eight started in the first grade with Mrs Eva Felton as our teacher These were Phyllis Cooper, Ruth Root, and Gerald Barnhart le had a toy band of which we were very proud We marched around the gym and on the stage and played for the grownups We really thought we were big then, but our school life was just beginning Entering the second grade with Miss Juanita Goff as our teacher, Kenneth Donson joined our happy class, but at the end of the year, he decided to explore new territory,so he left us to go to Lanier School Returning after a well deserved summer vacation we entered the third grade We walked into the room and much to our wondering surprise we saw Mies Goff, our second grade teacher We thought we were in the wrong room so we started to walk out, but Miss Goff called to us and said that she was to be our third grade teacher that year W were startled, but after we had recovered, we took our seats and began a quiet year Entering the fourth grade hiss Ada Doty was our teacher All of us were very fond of her and we seemed to get along very we11 together We thought when we entered the fifth grade that we would have a different teacher but I think Miss Doty liked us so well that she wanted to be our teacher again, so she followed us to the fifth grade Don't ever think that you would get tired of a teacher, because going into the sixth grade we had Miss Doty again' We enjoyed this very much, because we had become attached to her After the sixth grade was over, we thought we would be able t change classes as the high school pupils did But we were very dis appointed when we learned that we were going to stay in our home room all of the time But when you are down hearted there is always some thing to cheer you We welcomed Barbara Smith into our class with m eh grade a farewell party We were sorry to lose them, but they had worked very hard that year and they wanted very much to be called high school students The eighth grade found us at the sam place and in the same room This year Sam Via joined us We were very glad to have him as amember of our class Irs, Fern Holcomb was our seventh and eighth grade teacher After being promoted to the ninth grade we found, much to our enjoyment that Miss Grace Crichton was to be our class advisor and before the year was over she changed her name to Mrs Ronald Caplinger We welcomed to our class in the tenth grade, Kenneth Donson and Bill Vance Mrs Frazier was our class advisor for that year When we entered the eleventh grade we were seven happy pupils be cause we would be allowed to choose and buy our class rings Miss Swartsel, our class advisor, ably took over the direction of our unior class play Aunt Bessie Beats the Band As seniors we welcomed Wanda Lou Adams, who originally was a Junior class member, but she decided that she would try to graduate so that made a total of eight pupils in our Senior Class Yr Frazier was our class advisor this year and has helped very much Our class journeyed to Dayton September 27, 1949, to have our graduation pictures taken After we had broken the camera, we shopped around a while In the afternoon we went through the National Cash Register Company This was a very interesting tour Our class sold Christmas cards and wrapping paper around Christ mas time in 1949 to sell our funds for our annual Then about two weeks before Christmas we received our pictures We were very glad to get them because we wanted to give them as Christmas presents So our class of Wanda Adams, Phyllis Cooper, Barabara Smith, Ruth Root, Gerald Barnhart, Kenny Donson, Bill Vance, and Sam Via say good bye to dear old Gratis School mica 0 7 ' I . e . o gladness.
