For, without the help of our parents, our educational opportunities would never existed. Although these years have brought painstaking studying and work W ,14 - 05 the graduates of l9lb8.0ur parents have spent time, I J A to us,we could have never attained our goal without the cooperation of our parents. If it hadn't been for our parents, some of us would probably have given up the thought of a high-school education long ago. Our parents have been the 'stepping stones' toward the goal we are planning for. Though some of these graduates plan to choose their vocations as teachers,eng1neers, chem1sts,housew1ves,or other occupations, we shall realize that the path we have chosen is paved by the knowledge given to us by our parents. We sincerely thank you for your loving kind- ness and understanding in helping us prepare our- selves for a future that will bring us happiness L! and satisfaction. 6 X - 'xx fr , 'FN' ' ' if 'V o I N gpf, , ,4kM5ii!A J! Here in the Senior Class of forty-eight Are many varieties of persons That range from housewives and delegates To commedians, musicians, and parsons. Eileen Burnett is one of our lucky girls, Whose ambition is to be a good baker. We know that Jimmie likes her blond curls Because she will soon be his homemaker. Our play-boy is Bob Boomershine, Who has a middle name of nSubtle.' 0ver him all the girls seem to pine, And that is why he gets into trouble. Patsy Heller always seems to have a companion which we have tried twelve years to overlook. It is strange that she does not abandon This constant friend that we call a book. Kay Pombles ls our star concert singer, Who is applauded for her drawn-out sneeze. She is a very interesting entertainer, Especially with those she likes to tease. Our A-1 athlete is James Buehnerg Through basketball he has gained fame. On the floor no man could be keener, Because he can score enough to win any game. Wilma Wilson, voted student of knowledge, Has a likable and friendly disposition. to college, ambition. As there is a gossip in every class, We introduce to you Charlotte Hayes Also famed for amusing the mass, She brings gladness to all our days. is needed, To you, we now point out Tommy Sloan. As the clown of the class he has succeeded, No better Joker will ever be known. Our card shark is Janet Slone, Who never gets a poor deal. As she never has to repay a loan, Her artistry she will never reveal Jo Ann Eikenberry is our girl of leisure. Though driving a car is her pastime favorite, She plays her piano for our pleasure, And she writes Jokes for our delight. If your temper matches your hair, Peggy Swartz is quite a gal. For playing the piano she has a flare And we know she could be a good pal. If you should ever care for a new hobby, Look up quiet, versatile Gordon Ray Jones. You will probably find him in a hotel lobby, Where you can reach him by one of his telephones. If through a man's stomach is the way to his heart, Juanita 0'Ban1on will be able to catch the town's prize. She can bake ples, cakes, and her own special tart-- So beware boys, she'll snag you before you get wise. Irma Duncil is the tall, slender girl in our class. She ls never seen without a smile or word of cheer. Although as an artist or a poet she could easily pass, .A She hopes to become a steno at the end of the year. Q? And now, after this class you have met, QUE' We know that you will agree with us . -.Jr When we say that we will never regret -1:1 Having placed in 1 and Work our trust We hope that she will go Even though it 1sn't her Although no introduction o I ,,,,'.vr ' g, r P tai gg 'ailx of E fisflii CLASS WILL le, the Senior Glass of 1945, of Gratis High School, town of Gratis, County of Preble, state of Ohio, United States of America, being possessed of sufficient mental faculties, and an over- abundanoe of physical ability, do hereby declare this document to be our last will and testament. In witness whereof, we have hereto signed our names this 22 day of lay, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty Eight. - 1974.9 'cuass HISTORY, Q, In 1936, five of the graduating fifteen started in the first grade under the supervision of Miss Bourne. These were Eileen Burnett, Patsy Heller,Janet Blone,Robert Boomershine, and Peggy Swartz. After the first semester we acquired a new pupil, James Buehner, who had come here from Lewisburg. We had a fine Toy Band--well, at least we thought so. Mrs. Fulkerson was our second grade teacher. Did she give us a tough time! Jo Ann Elkenberry, Charlotte Hayes, and Kay Pombles, shared our hardships starting with the third grade. The same year that carefree lad, Clifford Elam, made it hot for the teachers. While we were in the fourth grade, we participated in a May Day program which was given in the Town Hall. The next year we were all very happy when Miss Ada took us down to watch the new gym that was being con- structed. To celebrate its completion, an operetta was given by the first six grades. The fifth graders were 'windmills' Cin spirit onlyi. That was the year that Berle Howard en- tered to make our class the largest in the school. Mr. Lucas made the time pass quickly by telling about his college ex- perlences. In the sixth grade, Miss Kurtz tried to improve our character. Whether she succeeded or not is still doubt- ful. By the time we arrived in the seventh grade, Irma Dun- cll, Juanita O'Ban1on, and Earl Sloan had joined our clan. We had so many teachers in the eighth grade that we couldn't count them. First, there was Miss VanHorne, who decided lafter a few months with usl that a life of a Wave would be easier. Next, came Mrs. Bushong, Mr. Thompson, and nearly a dozen more that we can't recall. what cocky freshmen we were! But we soon realized that being in high school wasn't as dazzling as we thought it would be. For some reason or other, hardly anything was accomplished that year, all we did was write descriptions of every type of airplane imaginable. Tlme flies, and we soon advanced to be sophomores of the highest caliber. We got the bralny idea of checking hats and coats at the Farm Bureau banquet. About five hundred hangers were gathered, and only two coats were checked the whole evening. lncidentally, one of the coats belonged to that renowned poet, Barton Reese Pogue, who tipped us a quarter. A dejectsd group of pupils came to school the next morning and resolved never to check coats and hats again. when school began in our junior year, Wilma Wilson joined our class to make a total of fourteen. Speaking of hard work, we soon learned what the definition was. We served at basketball games, gave a play entitled 'Come Rain or Sh1ne', and worked like dogs to put over the Junior-Senior reception at the Miami Hotel in Dayton. At the time it seemed like work, but now we look back and laugh about the problems that confronted us. Gordon Jones and Jerry Johnson came in the senior year to raise the male por- tion. Our senior Halloween party was held about a week be- fore the appropriate time, but everyone had a fine time any- way. We all tustled with 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' ln Shakes- peare, wrote autobiographies, gave speeches, wrote essays, and we gave a senior class play. We also endeavored to out- do our predecessors with our work on the school paper .and the Blue-Gold Annual. Commencement was the most important event of the year, and we made great plans for the occasion. Quite an argument was waged over our attire, but finally we agreed on the cos- tumes that you now see. At one time, we thought we would have to appear in coveralls. The class officers of our B - icr Class were as follows: Janet Slone, Pres., Patsy Heller, Vice-Pres., Gordon Jones, Sec., Eileen Burnett, Tres. p Now that the termination of our school life is close at hand,we are anxiously looking forward to making our own liv- ings and acquiring new friends. But wherever we may go, we will never forget the teachers, friends, and classmates that made our school experiences the richest that we shall ever have the opportunity to enjoy. ff fX ,. ov' , A - -..-U., ......'M-4... ,,. We were busy the first week at school getting exhibits ready for the County Fair, which was held Sep- tember 10, ll, and 12. I On September 16, Mr. Noe from Hamilton came to the school and took pictures of the entire student body and teachers. On September 2b, the Senior class journeyed to Dayton to have their graduation pictures taken by Mr. Knoll. After we had our pictures taken, we toured the Dayton Daily News Plant. Later in the day, we all relaxed by going to the movie. We were honored by a Coco-Cola show which was presented on October 21. The entire school enjoyed this presentation. The Senior class gave a Halloween party on October 30. The party was enjoyed by the upper four grades. After the entertainment, we served a lunch ln the lunchroom. Prizes were given to the best dressed, the funniest, and the ugliest. The Freshmen gave a Halloween party for the seventh and eighth grades on the night following the Senior party. Refreshments were served and sev- eral prizes were given. A radio show was given on November 19. Bob Autry and his Rambling Rangers, who were stars of the show, furnished the entertainment for the whole community. The Sophomores gave the annual Thanksgiving party in November. Each person who came was required to wear his clothes backwards. Prizes were given to several of those who participated in the activities. School was dismissed on November 26 for the Thanksgiving holidays. On December 1, the upper six grades were entertained by a native of India. He gave a very interesting talk about the people and their customs of India. He, also, showed the students the different manner of dress of the men and women of India. On December ll, nurses from the Mercy Hospital at Hamilton presented an interesting movie for the Junior and Senior girls. The Juniors gave their play entitled 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' on December 18. The play turned out to be a huge success, and the Juniors and supervisors were very proud. A Christmas program was given by the school on Monday, December 222 At the Christmas program,Santa came and presented all the students with candy. After the program, the students were dismissed from school for their Christ- mas vacation. , A movie featuring Laurel and Hardy was presented to the whole school. The picture was given on January 22. The Junior High Tournament began February 2. The southern half of the county played in the Gratis gym while the northern half of the county play- ed at Monroe. Gratis made a good showing by defeating Dixon and College Corner. They were eliminated in the semi-finals of the southern half by Lanier who later won the county championship. The Preble County Tournament began on February 18. Gratis played its first game of the tournament February 20 and was defeated by West Elkton. Saturday, February 21, Gratis was defeated by Monroe, which eliminated them from the tournament. During the last four months of school,we students were pleased to have the opportunity to see a movie about twice a month. Monday, March 22, the annual basketball banquet was held in the audi- torium. There were 150 basketball enthusiasts who attended the banquet to honor the players and cheerleaders. Coach Walker of Middletown was the principal speaker for the event. The Junior class is making arrangements for the Junior-Senior recep- tion which will be held May 13.
