On Friday mornings. Mustang nnania was everywhere: in the halls, in(side) the lockers, and in the gym. Here was the arena for showing our spirit. Go, Red, Go! GO! FIGHT! In all, 40 rockers held onto their seats from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. To stay awake the rockers talked to bystanders and shoppers, played games, and lis- tened to music. Weary, but $900 richer, the estudiantes locos, gathered their blankets and assorted gear and lugged it back to Grapevine, vowing to avoid rocking chairs for at least a thousand years. Grapevine l)eat every team it played both statistically and physically, but three times was denied the satisfaction of victory. The team completely dominated its old 3A-5 opponents in the first four games and then beat 4A Newman-Smith in the homecoming game. Yet, the Mustangs began to stuml)le in their first zone game against Rockwall when they were plagued by penalties and mistakes. In the next game against Bonham, the Mustangs had similar problems, making playoff possibilities bleak. Neverthe- less, the Mustangs showed their true ability and charac- ter against 5th ranked Gainesville, and became the only GHS team ever to beat the Leopards. All championship hopes were shattered in the game at McKinney when the Lions intercepted a last-minute pass and ran the ball back for the winning touchdown. Undaunted, the Mus- tangs came back to defeat Terrell, ending with a 7-3 sea- son. H H V H  ! SHOWS ABILITY The Junior Varsity showed potential by amassing a 7-3 record under the guidance of Coach Richard Tyner. Although the team was generally young and inexperienced, character and desire helped them to overcome their more seasoned opponents. It ' s really tough to keep a good attitude when you play on the J.V., said Coach Tyner. You receive little recognition and have to practice against the Varsity. But this team really put it together and came out with a good season. FRESHMEN WIN ZONE The Freshmen showed promise in compiling a 7-2 sea- son record and the best record in the North Zone. Size, depth, and attitude contributed to the winning season. We had a very good attitude, said Coach Forga. The team was willing to work hard and was eager to learn. This team has had a winning tradition, and I look for them to develop into a really strong team in the future. The team ' s only zone loss was at Gainesville where the Mustangs made a come-from-behind touchdown in the final seconds to close the score 21-22. The Mustangs attempted a two-point conversion for the win but came up short. The hard fought game was a good example of the team ' s spirit and determination. The team ' s inexperience was evident in the first seven games, five of which were lost by less than three points. The team began to jell when they entered zone play. The Mustangs defeated every team in their zone except McKinney. The Mustangs chances were dashed on February 2, when the McKinney Lions edged Grapevine 77-71 despite Brian Stephens ' 31 points, the most points scored by a Mustang player during the season. The team, consisti ng of Billy Pruitt, Lance Gilliam, Mike Hogarth, George Clerihew, Steve Carlin, Kevin Frizzell, and Charlie Weddle placed first in the Rockwall and Grapevine tournaments, second in the Bonham and Gainesville tournaments and third in the McKinney tourney.
