I9 THE BLACKBOARD 56 The following article was written by lVIr. Carmon O. Caplinger, former Principal of the Advance High School and County Superintendent of Schools of Boone County. How fortunate are the students who can go to school in the new Granville Wells School! When I saw the splendid Gymnasium, I remember an evening, years ago, when a group of us Advance grade school boys played a game of basketball by the light of gasoline torches in the old abandoned Heath school house. We drove to the game through a snow storm, in an open surrey. It must be a pleasure to go to school now. Apparently it was not always so. Soon after I became principal of the Advance School, I had what I considered a serious hooky problem. A certain student of whom I am very proud now, a Mr. Herman Broshar, felt the ax on his neck and lost some credits as a penalty for playing hooky. However let it be said to his honor that he came back the next year and made up the credits. My readers probably know this, but did you know what followed? Later while I was County Super- intendent of Schools and Herman was a teacher at Advance, he came into my office one evening with a long, serious face, saying that the students at Advance were playing hooky and were about to disrupt the school. With sympathy and amusement I asked if he had changed his attitude toward hooky. A smile broke through as he admitted, It does look different now. The panorama of life has passed with what appears to have been supersonic speed since that evening we played basketball in the old Heath school house. Two World Wars and a so-called police action, the telephone, radio, television, colorvision: the automdbile, airplane, jetplane, the threshold of rocket travel - all have made their advent. The atomic age is here and the world is a neighborhood. Thank God, I was a teacher. How proud I am of the success of my former stu- dents. I have one, General Carl DeBard, who is head of the Indiana National Guard, and another, Buster Jessup, who is Superintendent of the Indiana State Police, and thou- sands of others in all walks of life. I am glad I received my early schooling in Jackson Township, Boone County. Carmon O. Caplinger, Attorney-Advisor, Dayton Air Force Depot Dayton, Ohio
