Caplinger, former Principal of the Advance High School and County Superintendent of Schools of Boone County. How fortunate are the students who can go to school in the new Granville Wells School! When I saw the splendid Gymnasium, I remember an evening, years ago, when a group of us Advance grade school boys played a game of basketball by the light of gasoline torches in the old abandoned Heath school house. We drove to the game through a snow storm, in an open surrey. It must be a pleasure to go to school now. Apparently it was not always so. Soon after I became principal of the Advance School, I had what I considered a serious hooky problem. A certain student of whom I am very proud now, a Mr. Herman Broshar, felt the ax on his neck and lost some credits as a penalty for playing hooky. However let it be said to his honor that he came back the next year and made up the credits. My readers probably know this, but did you know what followed? Later while I was County Super- intendent of Schools and Herman was a teacher at Advance, he came into my office one evening with a long, serious face, saying that the students at Advance were playing hooky and were about to disrupt the school. With sympathy and amusement I asked if he had changed his attitude toward hooky. A smile broke through as he admitted, It does look different now. The panorama of life has passed with what appears to have been supersonic speed since that evening we played basketball in the old Heath school house. Two World Wars and a so-called police action, the telephone, radio, television, colorvision: the automdbile, airplane, jetplane, the threshold of rocket travel - all have made their advent. The atomic age is here and the world is a neighborhood. Thank God, I was a teacher. How proud I am of the success of my former stu- dents. I have one, General Carl DeBard, who is head of the Indiana National Guard, and another, Buster Jessup, who is Superintendent of the Indiana State Police, and thou- sands of others in all walks of life. I am glad I received my early schooling in Jackson Township, Boone County. Carmon O. Caplinger, Attorney-Advisor, Dayton Air Force Depot Dayton, Ohio I9 7 THgEggggBLAgQKBOAtgRD M g ' MR. JOHN SPOHR, TRUSTEE OF JACKSON TOWNSHIP The graduating class of 1956, of the Granville Wells High School, dedicates this annual to Mr. john Spohr, Trustee of Jackson Township. W'e recognize that we will be the first class to receive our diplomas in this new build- ing. This fact alone might have been a sufficient motive for our action. The consideration for this honor was based upon actions of the recipient far more broader than this one, let us say, selfish reason. To bring a building program such as we have here in Jackson Township to a success- ful completion required strong leadership and business ability. Mr. Spohr has demonstrat- ed these qualities and has erected a plant that fills our need at probably the lowest cost possible. We recognize that he has put into this venture many hours of work, worry, and thought for which he has not received enough material compensation. We know that this reward is greater, in personal satisfaction, in the knowlege that the children of this commu- nity have good facilities to obtain an education. We, the Seniors, with your permission, wish to broaden this dedication to include all students, and all the citizens of our township. We extend our appreciation and good will to you and your advisory board. CLASS OF 1956 56 'IIANVHD 'EFI XXX 'IH OS S1 OH f-'IO Ol NOSHDV dIHSNlXX TI-IE BLACKBOARD '9 LLLHLECC..B,QCEtQ.A.3.1?L,M.... We are stronger, and are better, Under manhood's sterner reign, Still we feel that something sweet Followed youth, with flying feet, And will never come again. Something beautiful is vanished, And we sigh for it in vaing We behold it everywhere, On the earth, and in the air, But it never come again. THE BLACKBOARD CLASS POEM John who plays a hot saxaphone, Will never be alone. Bob who is very bright, lVlay someday change the name of Goodnight. Dave and his quiet ways, May help him to succeed one of these days. Lanny will never make you sad, 'Cause Lanny is quite a lad. Alan who acts like a monkey, Is getting very very chunky. Frank or should we say sleepy, ls very happy with little Brendy. Arthur, his last name West, May someday be the world's dancing best. David who likes basketball, Still likes Jane best of all. Gene who is one of the best, Six feet under some day he will rest. Max with his short curly hair, Some day may be a millionaire. Dick is still looking for his lass, He had better hurry up or he'll be out of gas. Carolyn Coons just can't be beat, She is always ready for something to eat. Describing her isn't a hard task, , . . Cause Barbara IS a very nice lass. Carolyn Jenkins is lot of fun, But when she gets mad, you better run Carolyn, her last name is Newton, Isn't the maker of Fig Newtons. Uzella who is very nice, Will some day' be hit by rice. Liz always gets the willys, When she's around her boy Billy. Mr. Broshar is called Teddy Bear, Yet this bear is short on hair. Dick Gregory ' 9 T Ii? B '-5,.F3.!SB-O3Q-eee,,.,DDe5..6 CLASS PROPHECY De ar Mr. Broshar: Well, about ten years have passed since the Class of '56 has graduated from Granville Wells High School. It just doesn't seem possible. Since I am working in a telephone office in Bisbee, Arizona, I come in contact with several of my classmates. I talked with Carolyn Coons the other day. She is living here in Bisbee. She isn't married yet, but she still has hopes. She works as a pickle-sorter for the United Pickle Company. Carolyn told me that Barbara fBranstetterl is married now, and has three little red heads! Her husband, Lanny Goodall, owns a turkey farm near Jamestown, Indiana. Barb works as a turkey-scalder! H l'll bet you couldn't imagine who is working in the White House. Alan Stephens in When he was in high school, he always said he would work in the White House some clay, and I guess he finally made it. He sweeps the floors and does general duties around the place. David Carroll is manager of the West's Baking Company. Max Brown works with him. He is the pan-greaser for the bakery. David said he didn't know what he would do without him. He is such an asset to the company! john Scott is one of the little Godfrey's now. I knew they didn't call him hot lips Scott for nothing when we were going to school. Carolyn Jenkins is employed by Frank and Brenda Whittinghill, who live in Bev- erly Hills. Frank is a newspaper reporter. Carolyn Jean is their dog walker. Carolyn Newton has the most unusual job of all of us. She works as a cough-counb er in a T. B. sanitarium in Lafayette. V She seems to like her job well, so I'm told. Arthur West is my baby sitter! I have three children. Arthur is married and has one child. He has been put in jail thirty-three times for feeding his wife and kid on pop- corn. He is just wonderful with my children, though. Bob Guernsey is working as Dick Gregory's mail opener. Dick is in Hollywood now, and is working on his first big movie. I sure hope it makes a big hit. Uzella Pennington is an elevator operator for the Monument Hotel in Washington. She seems to like the job. David Spohr is the principal of the Granville Wells School. I hear that he gets a- long fine with the students. ' Gene Proffitt is to be married next week. He works for a company that runs a LOVELORN column in the paper, and finally met the girl of his dreams. She is a few inches taller than he, and about sixty pounds heavier, but he still loves her. Well, Mr. Broshar, I guess that is about all that I have to say. I thought you might be interested in knowing what the Class of '56 was doing. As you can see, we're all suc- cessful. I will see you at the reunion! Sincerely, Liz Mel-largue I9 THE BLACKBOARD 56 CLASS WILL I, Bob Guernsey, will my ability to get seconds and thirds in the lunch-room to Linda Owens. P I9 THE BLACKBOARD 56 MR. JOHN F. CRICK, PRINCIPAL OF WELLS SCHOOL I wish to express my gratitude and thankfulness to the Powers That Be , both di- vine and human. The honor of being the first principal of Granville Wells Memorial School is likewise a big responsibility. The manner in which the community has welcomed the Crick fam- ily, the cooperative attitude of students and teachers, the faithfulness and efficicency of the custodians, cooks, and volunteer workers in discharging their various duties, the support and backing of Mr. John Spohr as trustee, of Dr. C. T. Malan as County Superintendent, the continuing interest of township, county, state, and national officials and agencies, the generosity and friendship of Dr. Herman B Wells and Mrs. Bernice Wells, supplemented by a similar spirit in the hearts of countless other pulblic-spirited citizens, and finding ex- pression in this great educational plant and its excellent facilities, -- all these are reasons for deep gratitude. As your principal, I feel sure that I speak for all the host of well wishers, deeply interested in you and your school. We hail the future as we salute you, the first graduating class of Granville Wells High School, --- the class of I956.
