Page Fomffern n CLASS PROPHECY Never will I forget that night of May 5, just before our Annual went to press. As editor of the literary department, I had to write the Senior Prophecy. Me, a mere Senior, attempting to forecast the brilliant future of the Class of '28. I spent the early part of that fateful evening trying in vain to pierce the mist that veils our future life. As I sat musing, the prescience of a being came over me: the room was filled with a mellow glow and a soft voice bade me look into the crystal which was held before me. As the opalescent film thinned, I found myself gazing upon a crowded New York boulevard. A car drew up in front of a stylish shop, bearing the illumination Ressler and Ables, designers. Out of the tonneau stepped Professor William McCullough and his wife. formerly Miss Beulah Kislingbery, of the faculty of Columbia University. Pass- ing down the street, Professor McCullough entered the Lois Strickler Florist Shop. His wife went on to ther Johnson Beauty Parlor. Watching them. the scene faded and I was transported to the American Embassy in Constantinople. A reception for the directors of the Granville Floating University, Miss Helen Wellman and Mr. Charles Levering, was in progress. As the guests moved about, I saw Miss Hood. secretary to the Ambassador, introducing Miss Wiley, dean of Constantinople College for Women. Again the scene changed-to the crowded office of Edwards and Fitch, attorneys at law. I saw the familiar face of a young girl. She was seated at a desk nearby, typing. This girl was. Lucille Ankrum. Looking over her shoulder, I perceived she was typing on the case of Richards versus Childs' restaurants. Evidently Cocky had continued his business begun under Patsy. Once more the vision shifted, this time far away-to a newspaper office in Burma. Robert Marshal had apparently just arrived there as the American correspondent. With him was Aviator Walter Curtis, his pilot. As I looked, two swathy young men entered, talking animatedly. Bob Bowers, who was training for his Olympic races, was discussing the Meet with Evan Jones, resigned pitcher of the Philadelphia Red Socks. Another picture crossed the crystal-the dining room of the Lake Placid Club. At the entrance, Erma Haynes was showing patrons to their tables. As I watched, a small bustling gentleman entered, the president of the Up and Atme Advertising Company. Flicking Miss Haynes under the chin, he asked, Have a table for Uncle and his guests? Six. Big surprise for you. Some of our friends of the Class of '28. Why Charles, how nice of you to bring them here. Turning, he motioned in Barbara jones. director of athletics at Bryn Mawr, Mary Elizabeth Eddy, National Secretary of Y. W. Camps, Ruth Kennedy, primadonna of the Metropolitan Opera Company, Paul Masters, stage artist for the National Little Players Club, Doris Peter- man, critic for the Book of the Month Club, and Margaret Bakeman. noted poet. Storm tossed billows next framed the kaleidiscope shown in the pearly crystal. A palatial ship majestically rode the dashing waves. On the bridge stood Skipper Lytle. fimagine the restl. Far below the water line, the white-clad surgeon, Doctor Darrow, labored under a delusion, assisted by a neat nurse, Frances Brown. His patient was the erstwhile check-signer for our great Nation. Frederick Detweiler. While on his way to visit the wealthy ranch owner, Emerald Cherry in South Africa, he was stricken by an acute toothache. Y. To him honesty is the best policy and because of his firm belief in this maxim, he engages in a mighty war of words in which, after a fierce struggle, he is victorious. Bob is a partner in the stock firm of which E. M. Ralston is president. The Ralstons live in high society and his daughter, Gwendolyn, fiancee of Bob, is treasurer olli a committee which is to raise by subscription, the money for a new seaside home for c ildren. Gwendolyn intrusts Sl0,000, which she has raised, to Bob asking him to double it through speculation. Her father has promised that he will double the amount if she can double her 510,000 in five days. Bob dubiously promises to raise the money somehow. His opportunity comes more quickly but in a different manner from what he ex- pected. He is involved in a lengthy discussion about honesty and in the heat of the con- versation he makes a bet for 510,000 with the others of the firm that he will tell the , exact truth for twenty-four hours, or until 4 o'clock the next day. 1 ' Bob uses Gwendolyn's SI0,000 as a stake in the bet in order to be sure that he f l I doesn't try to trick them. The orchestra had no officers this year, giving its entire time to practice, under the directorship of Miss Speicher. The practices of the organization! were very regular, hardly one re- hearsal having been postponed throughout the year. The orchestra has played in Parent-Teacher Association meetings several times, including the meeting which was turned over to the presentation of the Class Plays for the benefit of the playground. They played at the special japanese Tea Garden, which was one of the features of the P. T. A. Carnival held in early November. Practically the whole club was present for those two days packed with fm as well as study. It is thought that this close contact which each girl had with the whole club, has been the cause of a very successful year. The girls hope they have started a custom which will become a regular feature of the Girl Reserve club each year. Another new feature for this year was the four interest groups: Poetry, Travel, Kodakery and Books. At the Pearl Service. an annual meeting, Dr. Shaw gave a talk and each one of the beatitudes was discussed by dif- ferent girls. The ring service was held in April in which Girl Re- serve rings were given to six girls who had tried during the past twq years, to live up to true Girl Reserve standards. Among the parties of the year were a Daddy-Daughter Supper and a Mother- Daughter Luncheon. Because of conflicting enegagements, the oper- etta was given on both March I6 and March l9. Although entirely different from pre- vious operettas, it was greeted by the audience with great enthusiasm which served in a measure, to repay the long. hard work on the part of the members of the cast and chorus. It was the story of a fair court lady Sylvia and a farmer girl Betty who, through the aid of a magic herb, traded gowns and sweethearts for the day, with drastic results and vows never again to relinquish their lovers. It ist difficult to say which of the four principles of the operetta deserves the most praise. The cast was very well chosen and each player threw himself into the part with excellent results. Frances Cuckert as Sylvia charmed her audience with her pleasing grace and lovely voice. Robert Edwards, her poet wooer, succeeded in producing in the audience, the desired disgust for his direful dittys. His solo Thine was especially well received by everyone. Mary Elizabeth, the soulful farmer maid, represented her part perfectly, kindling in everyone a sympathetic pity for her foolish folly. , Francis Thompson, as her William , sent the audience into gales of laughter at his clumsy manner and foolish nicknames. Paul Masters with his fussy court ladies, Barbara Jones and Dorothy Hood, proved himself competent to make a mess of things in a very amusing manner. The six farmer lassies, and six farmer laddies, pleased the audience with their win- ning ways. The Chorus was very well handled and showed competent and consistent training on the part of Miss Speicher. Mr. St. Clair may be highly commended upon the realistic and talented acting which he produced in the cast. and should receive, a vote of thanks for the amount of time he took to make the operetta a success. Appreciation too, is due to Miss Lintner for her coaching of the dances and to Miss Hulshizer and Mrs. Shepard for the supervising of the costumes. Because of its striking difference from previous productions and because of its un- usually beautiful music and excellent opportunities acting, Sylvia was pronounced a n f rx, success and was deemed well worth the weeks of time and hard work which were put into ix the production. fy K x X 'K . SMITH Lady Luck and Smith don't seem to get along together-but we won't talk about that, we'll just give a few of his accomplishments. Two County Champ teams, a District Champ team, and a team which could boast victories over the best in the district are Smith's champ crews in the three years he has been with us. If Lady Luck would only meet us half way Smith's accomplishments would be the pride of Ohio. CAPT. ARTHUR DARROW, '28-Forward Art was the classiest player in the county. His consistent style was the feature of every game and netted him the highest individual score for the season. CHAR LES SCHMITZ. '29-Center Playing a shift position UC. D. had his hands full. He outjumped the best centers that faced him and more than worried the best forwards that chanced in his guarding territory. PAUL ASHBROOK, '30-Forward 'Member that overtime period in the Newark game when our Sophomore Flash sank two winning loops? Paul's first year on the Varsity has been a memorable one. 0. ALFRED JOHNSON. '29--Guard When Enoch got hot there was no stopping him. We point to his performance in the Lancaster game as proof. A Lancaster paper called him the Blue Ace Whirl- wind, and justly so. WILLIAM EVANS, '30-Guard Bill's job at running guard was far from easy but never did he fail us. He could ' ! shoot. pass, and dribble with equal accuracy. X l X 1 PHILLIP YOUNG, '30-Forward I glx Phillip's heighth gave him an added advantage over his rivals and materially helped In X his unerring shooting. Through constant and steady drilling she produced a team that is well worth its mention. CAPT. BARBARA JONES, '28-Center Bill was the only veteran Miss Lintner had when the season started. She lived up to every expectation and managed her team with an experienced hand. Never once did she fail us and we are proud to offer our congratulations to Bill and her teammates. MARY ELIZABETH EDDY, '28-Guard Eddy's height was an added advantage to our Blue Ace guarding section. V Seldom did an opposing forward or center get by her. It is to her consistent guarding that many of the victories depended. MARY SWEET, '29--Guard Mary, straight passer, consistent guarder, and peppy player, soon found her place and played regularly. Her spirited playing did much to rally others on the team. THELMA THOMAS, '29-C. Guard Clean. consistent playing is but a small part of this Ace's accomplishments. Thel was always dependable, a clever passer, and a worrier to her opponent. Go to it, Thel. You still have a year with us! , BARBARA SHEPARD. '30-Forward Here is a girl that we are proud to say was one of our outstanding flashes in this past season. She was hard to guard because she was always on the go, but could be de- pended upon to cover her own territory. RUTH DARROW, '30-Forward When a sure tip shot is needed, pass it to Ruthie. She had no trouble in finding the loop-and saved the game many a time. ELNORA SHIRK, '30-Forward f When Ruthie or Bill made an underbaslcet shot it was Shirky that had passed the l it ball. Long shots and fancy passes were but part of her thrillers. 4 V l N LOIS LATTA, '30-Guard 3 Lois followed in her sister's footsteps and after playing a wonderful season gives X promise of two years of equally flashy playing. We're mighty proud of our Sophomore A. K S x x Whizzes-Lois, Barb, Ruth, and Shirky. ' MARSENA COX, '29--Manager X Always there with her medic case was our prize surgeon. They have won 59 games out of the 65. fThe last thirty games have been straight winsl. This year the Blue Aces scored 306 points to their opponents' IS. Undoubtedly this is the best record of any team in Central Ohio and, needless to say, it has been Harvey that has made it possible. CAPT. FRANCIS THOMPSON, '28-Center To Fat , our key man on the mighty forward wall, go our congratulations and thanks for his stellar playing, proof of which was shown by his selection as the most val- uable man on the team. CAPT.-ELECT CHARLES SCHMITZ, '29-Fullback HC. D. could punt, run and pass, and do each with exceptional ability. His triple threat powers more than proved his ability as the veteran of the backfield. PAUL LYTLE, '28-Left Halfback Receiving UC. D.'s tosses and executing skillful criss-crosses with Bill, were Lytle's specialties. He was the high scorer for the team and accounted for many of his goals only after some beautiful open field running. EMERALD CHERRY, '28-Left Tackle E.m's cheerful spirit in every game together with his unquestionable competence gave him an enviable position with the Blue Aces. At offensive half he was a hard man to stop. PAUL RICHARD, '28-Left Guard Twisted ankles and bruises and cuts seemed but incidents to Cocky . He got his share and more but never stopped play. We'll never forget his exhibition in the Newark game when for four successive plays Newark hammered their full weight against him and he threw them for a loss. ARTHUR DARROW, '28-Left End Getting down under punts and snatching passes entitles Art to a large share of the glory. Em , Cocky and Art were the Big Three of the left wing and never did they falter, lag, or fail. ROBERT EDWARDS, '28-Right End Among Bob's many accomplishments there was none that he better performed than football. His clean, consistent playing was more than a match for his best opponents and materially strengthened the right side of the line. CHARLES BROUGHTON, '28-Quarterback . . C-ranville's midget quarterback then launched a swift driving attack . . . CN. P. Daily Newsl. Thus our Prexy is honored and we are able to boast one of the ablest and most efficient quarterbacks in the county. He always concentrated on football and though but a first year man he soon proved his worth. John will be back next year to continue his exceptional playing. GEORGE PIPER, '29-Right Tackle One reason a left end run always worked was that Archie pulled out for interfer- ence and we really don't blame the opponents for being scared. We would too. What the right wing lacked in veteran skill they made up in the punch administered by John, Bob, and Archie. BILL EVANS, '30-Right Halfback Small but mighty, Bill was the only Sophomore Hash on the field. His open field running was always a treat and never failed to add to the zest of every game. Bill looms as a backfield mentor for next year. ROBERT MARSHALL, '28-Half and End Bob could be depended on either in the backfield or on the line and showed to best advantage when on the defense. His playing in every position that he filled during the year was entirely commendable. ALFRED JOHNSON, '29-End, Half and Guard Enoch could play any position at will and could be counted on at any time to strengthen a weakening line or faltering backfield. ROBERT LLOYD, '29-Quarterback Rotating at quarter with Broughton kept Bob more than busy during the season. He was usually sent in during the tight places in the games where naught but Harvey's strategy would save the day. FREDERICK DETWEILER, '28-Manager Fred proved to be a most capable manager for the team. His labor in taking care of both team and equipment was appreciated by all. 65357555 l I . X Each year as the Blue and While goes to press the annual staff for that year points I out some special achievement that the school has just cause for boasting of during that ,, year. Some of the staffs have taken their athletic conquests as the outstanding accom- , plishment. Some point to their dramatics, some ti their scholastic achievements, some f I to their oratory, and others, indeed, extoll with pride each school accomplishment for the year. We, of the Staff, are no exception to the general rule. However, our Pride for ! A the year is different. We do not point out our athletic achievements, or our dramatics, or If I' I ,' our scholarship, great as these virtues may have been. Rather do we take pride in our Q' ' community spirit and our cooperational achievements-for what are athletics but individ- ll as ' I ual triumphs, dramatics but practiced talents, scholarship but the work of a few. 1 1 lx , , ,i fi , X i 1 . . From a gully-washed meadow to a broad grassy plot, from a project to an achievement, from a dream to a reality, thus has our playfield come into being. Primarily it is a community achievement. Labor, money and plans came from the community and the co-operation shown during the completion of the field is amazing. Nearly two years ago the first plans were submitted at a community dinner. The field was surveyed, the cost was estimated and a budget prepared: and a cooperative campaign was planned for work and funds. A month had not elapsed before active work had begun. The community answered the call with labor and money. D. D. Deeds, E. H. Hammond, and A. D. St. Clair were made a committee to take active management of the project. Voluntary help assisted the paid labor which had been se- cured from the money contributed to the project. As high as fifteen teams and twenty men have worked on the field at one time. The winter of '26 found the field level-the high spots removed and the gullies filled in. Another year's work laid out the field into the different sections. Now as we leave this. building for the last time as pupils we turn with dimmed eyes to the held. So much has been done, and there is still much to do. The oval football field on the east side of the grounds is surrounded by the quarter mile cinder track, ready for future Blue Ace conquests. There is the baseball field laid out in the northwest quarter and the tennis courts just south of it ready for wielding rackets and whizzing balls. There, in the old school yard and under the stately maples the space for the play equipment. What an achievement! Over half the work is done. The field is there and all that is needed is young Gran- ville blood to make our fondest dreams come true. Thanks for the project go to the com- munity. Thanks for its perfected details goes to our friend, A. D. St. Clair, Super- intendent of Schools. Thanks for our small share should go to our undying dream of a Greater Granville-the dream which can only be fulfilled by future classes of our great Alma Mater. l'ugr lfnrly-.rrzrvn ,K NX ,X s x 4 fy 5 A is x .
