Amlcrson Donald johnson, Henry johnson Seoretar . M. Brown l wish to take this opportunity to congratu late the seniors for their effort in sponsoring this annual and everyone who has worked on this yearbook. The task of getting this book ready for pub- lication is very great. lt takes much time and en- ergy. The annual staff is the one who is to receive the highest of praise for their splendid work. Our school yearbook will always bring back pleasant memories of the days which were spent in high school. The days we go to school are the most plea- sant days of our lives. Many of the students will and can look back to their school days and say. a job well done, while others cannot say quite the same. So many students do such a good job of going to school by doing well in their academic work and the extra-curricular subjects which are being offered, while others do very little for them- selves. If students would only realize that hard study- ing and participating in school activities will and do pay off, there possibly wouldn't be such :i high degree of difference in their academic per- centile. I am glad for public schools. and that boys and girls can attend whether rich or poor so that they may gain knowledge which will be a great benefit to them later on in life. I am glad for the citizens of our country and the folks of our district are for public school edu- cation. and that they are willing to pay for these schools and for the education of the boys and girls. Do you want to know who one of our most cheerful and friendly persons in our school is? Vile will be glad to tell you that she is Mrs Brown, the office secretary. She not only does bookkeeping and writes out late slips and excuses. but is also a favorite among teachers and the stu- dents. Mr. Nelson will tell you that he couldn't get along without her, and we, the student body, must say the same. She is glad to help out when- ever she can, by taking care of an assembly, mak- ing costumes for her cub scouts, or being a guest for a luncheon given by the home economics girls. Mrs. Browns pleasant voice and charming smile make the school day seem much brighter. Even when she has a whole desk full of work to do and many reports to write up, she is never too busy to do a favor for anyone. Besides doing a fine job of working at school she is also a wonder- ful wife and mother. XVe of the annual staff, on behalf of the whole school. want to take this op- portunity to say, Thank-you, Mrs. Brown, for being so nice to us. and for helping to make G. H. S. a nicer place to be. , s X- Principal A. T. Nelson Genevra Fornell- University Minne- sota-BS. Typing, Shorthantl, Bookkeeping. LeRoy Anilerson-Superior State-BS. Diane Grussen- dorf The morning of September -1, l95l, was a very important stepping stone in the lives of the class of 55. That date marked the beginning of four successful years at G. H. S. The class con- sisted of twenty-nine boys and twenty-two girls. During the year of '51, they were officially initi- ated by the sophomores. elected Tommy Larson as class president, and chose Dzidra Zarins as Freshman Homecoming Queen attendant. Darrel Finch and john Anderson were class presidents during the Sophomore and Junior years respectively. Sharon Pearson and Darlene Neuman were Homecoming Queen attendants for their class. Early in the fall of '55 they received their class rings. Another big event that fall was when they presented their play. Galahad jones. which was a big success. The spring of '54 brought responsibility as well as success in the form of the 'lunior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Their theme was Stairway to the Stars, and the gym was beautifully decor- ated in blue and silver. Tommy Larson and Cfarol Smith reigned as king and queen. The class of '55 immediately be-came active in all school activities. Several boys went out for hasketbill, football. and baseball. They took part in Hi-l.ites and Annual. and several became out- standing in band and choir, speech and debate. always finding time to get on the honor roll. The tlass of 453. as hosts for Homecoming. chose Three Coins in the Fountain for their theme. l.aVerne Olson and Jeanette Franklin ruled over the dance as the royal couple for tht ey ening. Alice Peterson was class president for the seniors. They presented the Senior Class play in the spring. which was .1 delightful success. The class lived up to their predictions as freshmen. to do fine work in all they attempted during the four years at Li. H. S., and we know they will be a credit to whatever they undertake in the years to come. Cherubim Song. Hallelujah Chorus, Beau- tiful Savior, and Praise To The Lord. These anthems may be heard every morning between lllzflll o'clock to 10: 30, for this is when the choir meets to practice. You can always hear Mr. Skina ner. during this half-hour. telling some section they are flat. or leading the tenors over a particu- larly difficult passage, Sometimes you may hear the finished product of an anthem being made ready for a concert. The alumni who come to visit school never miss music period, for they sc-em to like refresh- ing their memories of choir-getting ready for the annual Christmas concert, choosing songs for festival, or practicing for choir clinic. The choir clinic is held each year at Luck. ln the mornings the choir goes over the pieces for mass choir with a guest director. They then snatch time for dinner and usually get together to prac- tice their own numbers for the evening. ln thc afternoons all the choirs practice together in thc auditorium for the concert which is held in the evening. It is an event which each choir member looks forward to. They not only get to sing with all the other choirs in this district. but get to shov their own singing ability as well. ln addition to the yearly Christmas concert put on at school, the choir often gives an llastei concert. On both occasions, the gym is beautifully decorated to give a perfect setting for the music. This year the choir went to Rice Lake for the spring festival. to win top honors in their division. The Grantsburg choir has always been successful at the spring festivals. and Mr. Skinner is to be truly congratulated. lfor many years now, the choir has been selling magazine subscriptions for the Curtis Company. iii order to earn some money. Iiach year they set a quota. and have always gone above it. The music students get behind this drive one hundred per cent. and this year they reached the goal of eight hundred dollars worth of magazine subscriptions sold, The music department gets thirty and fifty per cent of all money from sales. Not only the school itself, but the entire area of Grantsburg, is proud of the fine record of our high school band. They displayed unusually good form in all the football games last fall. Everyone will long remember their flashy maneuvers while playing, I Understand, The Happy Wanderer, and Bells Across the Gridiron, their closing theme at all the games. The band also marched in the Homecoming Parade and put on an excellent showing during the half of Frederic's Homecom- ing last fall. The G. H. S. Band emerged victorious at the Rutabaga Festival at Cumberland this year. Tro- phies were offered in marching and playing for cities with a population of one thousand or less, and the band came out on top with both of these honors. Then, too, the band took high honors, both in solo and ensemble work and the band as a whole at the district music festival held last May at Rice Lake. Nine members of our band gained the honor of being part of the one hundred participants in the All-Star Band which consists of the best players of each band in this district. VC'e can truly take our hats off to Mr. Skin- ner and the band for the fine work they have done and for the recognition Grantsburg has re- ceived because of them. The objective of this club is to create fair play and sportsmanship among the fellows who participate in the various sports at G. H. S. Another goal of the club is to raise enough money to send its older members to Madison each spring to witness the State High School Basket- ball Tournament. The big project carried on this year was a Faculty versus A team basketball game. In this game the team literally trimmed the faculty down to size. This. plus other enterprises such at selling concessions at home games and selling journal subscriptions. enabled the club to spend three very enjoyable days in Madison, The club, made up of fellows who take advantage of the many extra activities offered at G. H. S.. is an up and coming organization. This year. to create interest towards the club, the boys sponsored a skating party which was well attend- ed by about half of the student body. A fine group of over thirty students, aware of the part good speech plays in life, turned out this year for spring speech. The students have a good representation in each of the fields: original and non-original oratory, humorous and serious de- Clamations, four minute speaking, extemporaneous reading and speaking. Since its organization, the NFL, National Fora ensic League at Grantsburg, has never failed to have some representation at th State Speech meet of XY'isconsin in Madison. Wie hope to have a good delegation there this year too. XVe are proud of the fine representation this activity has given our school. It was felt that the increase in size would facilitate the handling of the various drives and projects, and also provide for better representation of the student body as a whole. Homecomin Homecoming, held October l. was a grand sut- cess even though we lost the game to Nilltown. l+l to l5. One fact that the senior class can be proud of is that the pre-homecoming festivities were the besi that anyone can remember. The bonfire rally held the night before homecoming was attended by .1 large group of students and the yells could be heard all over the village. A unique feature of the rally this year was the announcement of the King and Queen of Homecoming 1954 heretofore re vealed immediately after election which is held several weeks before. No one could have been more surprised than King l.uverne, l'ere,'i Olson and his Queen, kleanette Franklin when they were chosen. The snake dance was fun for all that pin ticipated in it as it wended in and out among cars and various business establishments. The parade also was a colorful one even though the steady drizzle dampened onlookers and streaked the floats a bit. The theme of the Wifi Homeeoming Dance was Three Coins in a Fountain, after the song hit of the month. The gym was decorated in a combination of brilliant fall leaves, whnch were az their height of color, and a Roman motif in har- mony with the song lyrics. l.arge silver signs as though in the heart of Rome, pointed to various sights in the eternal city, while the fall leaves gave the scene a festive touch. The high point, however, was the beautifully decorated fountain in which the three coins lay. The Grand March, led by King l.uverne Olson and Queen .leant-tre Franklin, and accompanied by the Shadows Orchestra, was an experience which will remain in our hearts always. A beautiful stairway leading to a myriad of of silver stars hanging from a sky of royal blue was the setting for the 195-I Banquet and Prom. This is a gala formal affair. when the juniors play host to the Seniors, livery spring. the buzz around school is. whos taking whom to the Prom. who is the royal couple this year at the Prom, and such remarks. lt is a time for each junior class to prove its ability in art, business. and as successful entertainers for an exciting event. April 23, in the spring of '54, the Juniors decorated the gym from ceiling to floor to the theme of Stairway to the Stars. The tables were trimmed with rosebanked candles. and the gym was enclosed in a haze of blues. A chicken dinner was served with ice cream and cake for desert. A welcome was given by the class president, john Anderson, the FFA quartet sang two songs, and the class will and prophesy were read, The first half of the evening ended in a musical note, and the second half began with one. Bruce King and his orchestra supplied the music for the Prom. Girls in formals. escorted with boys in their best manners, soon filled the halls and dance floor. There were flowers strewn around the rose trellis, and flowers on the dresses of the girls. Everyone saw silver stars hanging from the ceiling, and had stars in their eyes. Later, the king and queen, Tom Larson and Carol Smith, were led to the throne to be coronated by the l955 royal couple, Merton Lien and Marlene Sandberg. The throne, adorned in silver, stood near the rose trellis by the stairway leading to the star-studded sky. The grand march was led by the newly crowned couple, and was followed by dancing. The evening came to an end soon after, but it will remain a memory in the hearts of all who attended. Prom and Banquet Diners at the '54 Banquet -41 y i pw., 'T X' , .e wwe: xg? . King Tom and Queen Carol On November 12th the junior Class presented their class play, l'Tattletale. It was a big success both financially and dramatically. Mrs. johnson de- serves a big share of the credit for her excellent job in directing and casting. Tattletale was a comedy in which Patty, a high school girl had her boy friend steal a typewriter for her so she could finish writing her novel. The typewriter was accidentally broken so Patty sold her novel to the local newspaper in order that she could have the typewriter repaired. But alas-for some time Patty had been keeping a dairy, which revealed some very personal and interesting facts about the townfolk, and this was instead published by mistake. Of course, the town, including her family, was in an uproar. All works out for the best and there is a happy ending. CAST Patty, the tattletale ....,..,.r.............,.. Headin' For A XVeddin', by Le Roma Rose on Thursday evening. May Sth. The play, a farce in three acts. was a radical change from the usual. having its setting among the hillbillies of the Ozarks. The stage took on the look of the Hollow- bone's shack, which was ludicrous to say the least. and our usually neat seniors looked their part in disheveled hair-dos. tattered jeans. and bare feet. The hero of the play. Homer Hollowbone. has fallen in love with a debutante.
