Q- W.-suv ' 7 uw As the experiences that we seniors have share d for the past twelve years gradually turn to memories, the scenes around Grantham High become more pre- cious than ever to us. As we are about to step off the Worn steps of this familiarbuilding onto a flight which will lead us into a future unforeseen, we realize how valuable every moment here with our classmates and friends have been. It is these m o m e nts filled with seriousness and gaiety, tritunph and defeat, hard work and joyful play, that the members of our annual staff have tried to c apt ur e in the 1961 GRANNAWAYNE. More decisions have to be made during the senior year than in any other. Because you have shown us the importance of an education and have sacrificed for our sake, because you have pulled us out of the ruts of discouragement when we seemed to be stuck, and have encouraged us to reach for higher goals, and because you have always stood beside us with understanding, patience, and kindness, we are proud to honor you with the dedication of the 1961 GRANNAWAYNE. Although we know we can never repay the debt of love and gratitude we owe for your faith in us, we are happy to present this, our yearbook, to you as an expression of our apprec i atio n for helping usto attain our long-awaited goal of graduation. We've worked and studied in our past And reached our goal as Seniors at last. Twelve steps we've takeng My, how we flew! And as we progressed, Our hopes really grew. A part of our valuable time was spent In just pure fun and merriment. The halls we walked are nearly threadbare, But we have spent some of our happiest moments there. Our gratitude and hopes we leave I To our underclassmen in whom we believe. Our parents we thank for patience strong Knowing their guidance has kept us from wrong. To our teachers, too, we owe a great debt For they were behind the success We have met. As graduation draws so near, Perhaps we'l1 pause to catch a stray tear. But the things we've done were not in vain. Deep in our hearts, these treasures remain. And when our spirits seem to wither, We'1l relive our days in high school together. It seems just a short time ago that we began our first year at Grantham. Ouch! My bedfellow just kicked my sore, aching, sunburned back. After much tumbling and twisting, I s lip from my bed, trying not to wake anyone and go quietly down to the Seashore. Suddenly I stumble over a small shell--the oddest looking one that I have ever seen. Then once again thoughts of our Senior Class fill my mind, and I begin to think aloud. I wonder where each one will be ten years fromlnow. Will we be as scattered as the shells along the s e ashore? Out of the stillness of the night, I hear a still small voice from the shell thatl am carrying, and it says to me: Shall I tell you what the members of the 1961 Class will be doing ten years from tonight? W---W--Who are you, I stutter? I am a magic shell, and I can tell the future. Please do, I say. As the magic shell begins to speak, I listen very carefully-- BOBBY CRAWFORD and BILLY CARTER, having graduated from N. C. State, are owners of huge farms, which have cows, little Crawfords, and little Carters. - JOHN JERNIGAN, another State graduate, is teaching Agriculture at Grantham High. MARK HOOD, retired assistant coach, is on his Texas ranch raising horses. JUDY DENNING is now a member of the W.C. College faculty. DELTON GRADY, applying his FFA training is one of the outstanding Grantham farmers. LA ROSE JACKSON, LOUISE BRADFORD, LETTY, THORNTON, and JACKIE SUTTON are four wonderful homemakers. That smiling nurse coming out of room 309 is JANET LAWS. Who wouldn't get sick just for her to hold his hand? Congratulations to PHYLLIS WEAVER, who has taken the position as manager of the New York Yankees. Lower the gang plank, here come DAVID DUDLEY and DEWEY RAYNOR of the United States Navy. ALVIN LAWS is sure to receive another gold record with his latest hit Dosie Doe. BARBARA PENNINGTON is on tour giving piano concerts throughout the United States and Canada. CARROLL INGRAM is doing quite well for himself in his hardware store in Grantham Corner. The top scientist of the day is none other than HOWARD JONES. Wonder if he has hit Pluto yet? CAROL BEST is a bookkeeper, one of the best in town. LOIS HOLLOM ON, BETTIE BROCK, IRIS JOYNER, PAT BEST, LINDA BENSON are private secretaries and doing just great. CHARLES MASSEY and 'family have moved to Raleigh, N.C. , where he is a detective on the force. GEORGE MOZINGO, chief engineer in San Francisco, is working on a big project, reconstruction of the Golden Gate Bridge. MILTON BRITT, who always wanted to make a lot of money is doing just that, but it is one-tenth of an inch too large by government standards. BETTY LOU DUNBAR is a secretary for the F. B.I. JOE WILKINS, who is making the Army his career, is now stationed in Honolulu. EUGENE HEAD, SHELTON JOHNSON, EDGAR HOOD, and GENE WELLS have re-enlisted in the United States Air Force. JANET BYRD is a telephone operator in Goldsboro and is also a homemaker. EVELYN HARE is still searchin' for that one in a million. JOYCE HARRELL has finally secured a satisfied mind with several little minds to satisfy. KITTY HILL is teaching math at Bath, N. C. and finds it intriguing. Novelist, JEAN STRICKLAND, has just finished her latest novel, How to Raise Five Children for Fun and Profit. MAX WARRICK and G RANG ER BROCK have two of the largest businesses in town, new offices are located on Center Street in Goldsboro. GAIL GRANTHAM is the new switch board operator in Hotel Goldsboro. BOB WEAVER, has just enlarged his business by buying out Hasty-Pltunbing in Mt. Olive. KAREN SULLIVAN is doing well as a fashion model in New York. SANDRA GRADY is kept busy with a family and secretarial work for a Goldsboro law firm. MARY ALICE THIGPEN has been named Assistant State Supervisor of Home Economics. As the magic shell concludes the future of everyone, the small light inside disappears, and suddently I hear foot- steps which are none other than Janet's. Come on, she calls, It's late and we have a big day tomorrow, so we had better get some sleep. As I run to meet her, I think how very unusual this night's experience has been.
