We shall always remember her ready wit, critical understanding, keenjudgment, and cheer- ful disposition. Even though she has been with us a short time, her influence has been a strong factor in our thinking and considering seriously the field of endeavor we would like to pursue. She has emphasized the necessity to search for knowledge and to plan for the future. She has taught us to be painstaking and accurateg thus encouraging the same fine quality of work as she herself does. It gives us great pleasure to have this opportu- nity to show our gratitude because she has Uied to make our Senior y e a r a highly suc- cessful one. 'Ol Class Hisfory I am sure thatas we, the Seniors of 1959, walk downthe aisle together forthe last time, our thoughts will turn backward to the day in September, 1955, when we first entered high school. The 57 excited and highly enthusiastic members of our class were greeted by Mr. Leroy Pittman and Mr. Malcolm Be n d e r, our homeroom te a che rs. Soon we became accustomed to the high school routine and elected our class officers who we re: President, Bill jinnette, Vi ce President, Annette Britt, and Secretary and Treasurer, Alice Strickland. Our extracurricular activities included F.F.A. , F.H.A. and b a ske t ba ll, which we planned to continue for the rest of our high sc hool days. To conclude our freshman year, we enjoyed a Weiner roast at Herman Park. Thoroughly acquainted with the routine of highschool, we returned as Sophomores and were greeted by our new teachers, Mrs. Jacquelyn Bryan and Miss Evelyn Davis. Although quite re du c e d in number, we gained Marjorie Daniels, Clara Hare and, Helen Aswell to fill the vacancies. Our officers for thisyear were: President, Jerry Wadsworth, Vice President, Dwight Laws, Secretary, Betty Thigpen, and Reporter, Tommy Mozingo. We enjoyed another class party at Herman Park. Older and wiser, we took our places as juniors underthe guidance of Miss Evelyn Davis and Mr. DJ. Robinson who led us through many activities. We then realized that our senior year and graduation were not far ahead. During our first class meeting we elected our class officers who had to assume much respon- sibility. They were: President, Charles Weaver, Vice President, Betty Thigpen, Secretary and Treasurer, Bill Jinnette, and Reporter, Carroll Ingram. To fill the vacanies made by those whom we had lost, came LR. Best and Theresa Kornegay. It was after long hours of hard work that we proudly presented our junior Play Hi1lbilly Wedding. Also highlighting our junior year was the junior-Senior Banquet at wh i c h our theme was Guter Space. Both of these events are ones that we shall long remember. A gay occasion was our class party at Goldpark Lake. On September 2, 1958, forty -three dignified and happy seniors took their place under the guidance of Mrs. Doris jones and Mrs. Joyce Bradley. We realized that our long a wa i t e d goal in high school was almost within reach. Soon after school started we elected class officers, who were P re si de nt, Charles Weaver, Vice President, Gail Grantham, Secretary, Ann Laws, Treasurer, Evelyn Edwards, and Historian, Betty Thigpen. Work was begun on the annual, and we all worked hard selling ads and pens, to help the staff in the preparation of it. Marriage vows were spoken this year by LaVerne Best, Phyllis Jernigan, jean Sutton, Margie Smith, Glenn Futrell and jerry Tyner. One of the most memorable days was the day we received our long -awaited class rings. Time is flitting fast, and now in December we realize that very special occasions lie in store for us. Attending class parties, looking forward to the se nior play, and being the guests of the juniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet, are events to which we look forward. As we proceed to our places to receive our diplomas, may our moments of reverie be of happiness and sadness. With unforgettable memories we will leave Grantham High and our youthful, gay life to find our places in the world of tomorrow. Sales Service .2 Goldsboro North Carolina PROPHECY The time is May, 1969, and it is vacation time for me. I am, incidentally, THERESA KORNEGAY, sec- retary to president of the G ene ral Assembly of the United Nations. Du ri ng my vacation, I plan to board a jet airliner and fly to Central Aiport in Grantham, N. C. , a growing me tropol is, to see my classmates, whose friendships I have greatly missed since 1959. The last time I saw them, someone said there were no signs of success in their hearts and minds. But do you know- ANN LAWS is now reservationist for TWA Airlines. MATTIE WILKINS, R. N. , now se rvin g a t Grantham Community Medical Center, is a great help to her Community. JERRY WADSWORTH, the high school math shark, has completed a design for a new LockleedJet Airliner. BETTY GRAY KORNEGAY is now secretary to Investor Sl-IELTON GRANTHAM. SALLIE ANN BEST, a senior accountant, is checking on the expenditure records of Grantham LoanCompany President GAIL GRANTHAM. BETTY THIGPEN, having graduated from ECC, is instructing the small fry at Grantham, in the 3R's. CAROLYN DENNING, MARY ALICE DENNING, and JENNY PORTER, ha ving given up their main goal in life, are working off their housewifely ambitions as waitresses at Hotel Goldsboro. MARJORIE DANIELS, who would like to give you that stylish hairdo, has opened a modern beauty salon in Grantham . SHELTON WILLIAMS and RAY MERCER, our hometown boys, have ope n e d a gas station o n Main Street. Go by and fill up. GENEVERETTE WISE and CLARA HARE inherited a fortune and have re ti re d from their secretarial duties and are on the way to Hawaii to pursue their dream. Incidentally the dream is big game hunting. DARTI-IA WES TBROOK is punching buttons on a robot in the tax department of the Pentagon'Building in Washington, D. C. JOE STRICKLAND is after a seat in the House of Representatives. His campaign manageris none other than CHARLES WEAVER, who led us through so many battles in high school. EVELYN EDWARDS, a top chemist, has discovereda new chemical, brainic acid. Some say that it really works! Those girls who have le a rn e d the sound of Take a letter, please. are LENA JOYNER, JOYCE KENNE, ALICE STRICKLAND, and ANNETTE BRITT. T h ey are all employed by TO MMY M OZ IN GO and RU S S ELL ROBINSON co-owners of the huge Grantham Ball Point Pen Manufacturing Company. I visited WGHS, Grantham, N. C. , and was just in time to hear announcer STANLEY I-IARTLEY introduce the Heartbreak Duet composed of LUBY BRYAN, and J. R. BEST. JOANNE JERNIGAN is manager of the Dodgers, but her own manager hopes she will retire soon and manage their own team. As I drove through Grantham, I saw County Agent JERRY TYNER explaining how to put corn in the groLuid to farmer GLENN FUTRELL. Didn't F.F.A. help, Glenn? NELLIE MAC BRYAN is still defending the title of Most Athletic which she won in high school. See her play basketball on television tonight. BETTY JANE THORNTON has adopted Georgia as her home sta te. You will remember she attended Berry College. I stopped at television station WGVC in time to see the hilarious BILL JINNETTE make his debut as star of People are Funny. The actress, JOYCE CASEY welcomed him. Happily pursuing their homemaking duties, are HELEN ASWELL and JEAN SUTTON. BARBARA BEST has actually refrained from giggling and has become navyman JAMES BARNES' social sec- retary. Advertising ma na g e rs BOBBY RAYNOR and LYNWOOD PRICE of the Grantham Daily News are currently soliciting ads for the annual graduation edition. My vacation seemed so short, never have I enjoyed chatting and visiting with so many. Now, back at work, I find that I shall have to diet. It will be well worth it though, in exchange for all that food and relaxation. Um, um.
