Grant-Wheeler Science Olypics The Grant-Wheeler Science Olympics is an annual event which takes place in early spring at Grant Union High School. It is put on by science teachers from those two counties who meet several times during the school year to plan and organize the event. Reasons for having the Science Olympics include the following: l)to increase student interest in science, 2) to provide for inter- school competition in academics, and 3) to show students that science can be fun. Events are quite varied, ranging from an individual written activity where students demonstrate their knowledge of a particular subject, to a team activity in which the members try to keep their heart rate down as they carry a load through an obstacle course. The 1988 Science Olypics was held on April 8. Eight high schools in the two-county area traveled to John Day for the event. Grant Union had nearly fifty students participating, led by the Freshman, who had 33% of their class taking part. However, Monument High School was highly organized and came with a deter- mination to win. They not only had participants in every event, but did quite well in most events. The order of finishes was Monument, Wheeler, and Grant Union. SCIENCE OLYMPICS Science 79 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM 80 PROM As we dance the night away, under the CITY LIGHTS. Riding motorcycles and being outdoors was a way of doing two of his favorite things at once. Canyon Mountain was one of Troy's favorite places to be. Troy loved all of this, but his family was still the most important thing to him. When we lost'Troy we lost a great person, and a great friend. He will be deeply missed. ELK Heard him take his running in the wood and hooves strike winter from a buried bell; where long branches hung with ice six antlers sprang; before the moon another six, and held against a single fir he stood, legs to cold again, and fled, his keen cloved feet afire, his head twelve-tined like a running year Poem by Robert Krieger 92 MEMORIAL o JUNIORS JUNIORS JUNIORS JUN r 4 Jennifer Brady Ben Brandt Erica Bygness m Clay Cameron PS O HH o y Thomas Cross r 4 Gale Davis Echo Deputy April Ducoing GO cd Nancy Cav rse Guppy Clark Sharon Claughton Layne Cook Becky Gibson Todd Guess Charlie'Hahn Holly Helmick Gold Town Pizza 155 West Main John Day 575-0250 PS o Tom Hensley Shannon Holthouse Stuart Hudson Wayne Johnston l”S 94 JUNIORS IORSJUNIORSJUNIORSJUNIORSg Selena Kahalioumi Wendy Kendall Sharrie Kimes Dawn Kreps Christeen Mitchell Marty Miller Bob McConnell Tanya McArthur Kelly Larkin Tony Lenz Dodie Lewis Jodi Lino Monte Mooney Cary Morris Keith Mulder Kim Neely David Nelson Bryan Niles Steve Pappas Katie Pike a I—I o w co JUNIORS 95 John Day Video Shoppe 519 West Main John Day 575-1387 O JUNIORSJUNIORS JUNIORS JUN ——Jonna Radinovicl H-d ikta Reid Russell Reimers larlin Robinson O I—I £ Todd Thompson Shawn Taylor - Kari Stinnett David Standley m Brandlyn Rogers Samantha Salvin Thomas Smith Travis Smith Jason Thornton Katrina Weaver Sheila Welter Jeff Wilcox Pi Dovie Wood Troy Williams Jerry Williams ' Ne juniors ,Chris Wilhite Main Stop Mini Market 100 East Main John Day 575-0327 ORS JUNIORS JUNIORS JUNIORS § Laurie Wright Tod Wright Russ Young Jamin Yriarte Dovie and Jenny as usual are lost in the world of LOVE!
