of nine games, in the first game grant union lost its starting quar- terback for the entire season in the fourth play of the game. after the second game, grant union lost the majority of its starting line- up for the year due to a training rule violation. playing with only three seniors, the young and inexperienced prospec- tors went on to lose seven straight games, the total of eight losses suffered was more defeats than this school has accumulated in the pre- ceeding six years. the young men who played on this team showed a tremendous amount of courage under the circumstances. 44 wahtonka. in non-league play, grant was 3-4 including the championship in the grant union tournament, grant took its 14-7 regular season mark to the state aa tournament in eugene only to lose to number one-rank- ed marist by a score of 56-45, and to stayton in overtime 62-54. however, the prospectors earned the respect of all the participants, in fact, sam barry was voted to the second all-state tournament team by the coaches. seniors clent catron and sam barry dominated the statistics during the season, clent was first in rebounding and assists while second in scoring, in addition he was all-state honorable mention and earned the best defense award, sam barry was first in scoring while second in rebounding and assists, he also earned the best offense and player of the year turned out, a third coach was added to the wrestling staff in the person of gene winnetL this enabled the frosh to work separately from the varsity and several frosh wrestlers developed to the point of being capable of challenging varsity members in wrestle-offs, a total of 39 wrestlers finished the season and that figure was almost double the previous seasons total, those 39 boys amounted to more athletes involved in wrestling than any other winter program this year. the prospectors had several individuals that wrestled well at the district tournament in nyssa. gary hammons repeated as district 7-aa heavyweight champion, rod retherford placed second at 98 lbs. and thus earned his first trip to the state tournament, randal smith captured a fourth place medal, pat larson and rich lambeth plac- ed fifth, with only one senior completing the season, the prospectors could have a fine season next year. at the annual awards banquet, the following wrestlers received special recognition: gary hammons—most outstanding wrestler, rod retherford—most improved wrestler, keith jackson—most inspirational. 55 IWmmm IK IPI Jit W VAVAV baseball team finishes left to right: prospectors were very young and inexperienced, progress in the beginning was slow due to many wet, rainy and cold days, when the sun finally decided to shine progress was made and the team finished the season with all won and 11 lost record and third place in the district. the prospectors were led by the three senior lettermen. loren stout, dan me getrick and tim hueckman all had superb years, loren led the team in batting with a .477 average! dan me getrick hit .403 and although plagued by a sore arm much of the time still posted a 3 win 2 loss pitching record, tim hueckman hit .310 and fielded his second base position in excellent fashion. several new team and individual records were set this year, the prospectors batted .294 for a new team batting average for the season, loren stout set a new record for putouts with 161 for the season, mike surplus, sophomore pitcher, struck out 62 batters during the season for a new record, dan me getrick set a new one game strike-out record when he struck out 16 against burns, dan me getrick and scott denney, a freshman, set new records for fewest strike-outs in a season with a minimum of 50 at bat, as they both only struck out 2
