1971 PROSPECTOR GRANT UNION HIGH SCHOOL JOHN DAY, OREGON August 31, 1970 Deary Diary, Today we arrived at Grant Union for our first day of the new school year. It was fun meeting friends whom we hadn't seen all summer and making new ones. We found new courses open to us to add great challenges to our abilities. German and French joined Spanish in the languages. An Art Metal class was offered in the welding field to give the boys a chance to be artistic. Three periods of art were open to all students, no artistic ability required. Since each class was a mixture of all grades and all ranges of ability, the Pass-Fail system of grading was applied to these classes. A Psychology course drew quite a number of students. The social-science teachers now were teaching International Relations, Sociology, and Anthropology in addition to their regular ones. P.S. We, the members of the Annual Staff, have chosen the Dear Diary theme to use in the 1971 Prospector. IN MEMORIUM Courtesy of Duncan Studio Inc. DAVID ROBINSON We dedicate this 1971 Prospector annual to David Robinson, who died in a car accident shortly before school started last fall. The Staff. PROSPECTORS REACH GRANT UNION HAS SUCCESSFUL SEASON The 1970 football season saw the Prospectors winning their second straight District 7-AA Cham- pionship. Grant Union went on to record a 33-8 up- set victory over Stay ton in the State Quarter-final game. The season finally ended when Grant Union lost to the number one team in the State, Junction City, 28-6. The Prospectors clinched the District title with big wins over Vale, Burns, Wahtonka, and Madras. The latter was the annual Homecoming game. By reaching the Semi-Finals in the State Play- offs, Grant Union had a very successful season. This is especially true when the team lost two of its first three games, and things did not look very bright. But by pulling together and displaying an usual spirit of team unity, Grant Union reversed things. In the last news poll before the play-offs, the team was rated seventh in the State and by winning the Quarter-final game, Grant Union was placed among the top four teams in the State of Oregon for AA schools. The Prospectors will certainly miss this year's senior football players. They were indeed a Championship group. Their three-year varsity record saw them on two District Championship teams and one second place team. These include our own Grant Union High School, John Day Elementary School, Humbolt Elementary School, Seneca Elementary School, and I zee Elementary School. Board members are chosen from and represent the different school areas. Chair- man Phillips, Mrs. Henning, Mr. Mills and Mr. Ray live in the John Day section while Mr. Farrell and Mr. Southworth represent Seneca. Mr. Hyde lives in the ranch- ing area of Izee. Below show these members at work during one of their regular sessions. BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Terrence W. Farrell, J. W. Southworth, William Hyde, Charles Mills, Richard G. Shown here are faculty members enjoying this meal and some of the girls who worked hard on the preparation and the cleanup job afterwards. The girls in Home Ec. classes usually start the year by learning to sew. The unit is usually concluded with a fashion show. ARTS Auto Mechanics and Welding have continued to be very popular and useful shop classes. Mr. Johnson's shop classes formed a company to manufacture and sell tool boxes. They sold stocks to students to finance the project. Here are pictures of the boys at work on the tool boxes: cutting the sheetmetal, working on the boxes, and two finished tool boxes. o HEALTH PHYSICAL ED. Mr. Antoni Toni Kosydar Boys' Health G Phys. October 19-23, 1970 Dear Diary, HOMECOMING! The week began with the freshman skit during the noon hour, followed by the other class skits throughout the week. Signs were seen everywhere. Thursday we had a pep rally after school. The members of the Booster Club also participated with their yells, skit, and sign (bottom, left.) The noise parade was that evening, through town from the Elks parking lot to the lot opposite the Clover Farm store. Vickie Carr was crowned Queen, and a pep rally was held. Sophomores won the trophy. Our Homecoming game was held on Friday and we WON! It was followed by the traditional dance. HOMECOMING QUEEN VICKIE CARR Spectators at the Home- coming game on Friday night saw our Prospector boys win over Madras on a wet, slimy, muddy field. Soon it was hard to tell one player from another, as the picture below shows a typical group of the players. Mr. Kosydar is the group sponsor. Two more pictures taken at the Sweethearts Ball RODEO CLUB Dear Diary, Another new club at Grant Union this year is the Rodeo Club. Because so many young people in this eastern Oregon section of the country have an opportunity to take part in the annual Junior Rodeo, this club was formed as a mean of getting them together and discussing their mutual problems. It includes students from other schools, some of whom hold offices in the club. Mr. Baucum is the club sponsor at this school; he is pictured below. Dear Diary, Kay Hildebrand, director, summarizes: Having worked on Scene-Drome for the past two years, I find that I have learned from my experience in this production. Knowing the difficulty of pleasing everyone, I've found the only way to cope is to listen to comments, weigh them, and then decide their validity. Scene-Drome is an organization of ideas and diligent work. The only way Scene-Drome can survive in the years to come is with your support and effort as listeners and workers. Aid from the Administration and Mrs. Dannen have always been a useful tool in our success. And they deserve a vote of thanks. And without Mr. and Mrs. Jolley we wouldn't have had a chance. Working behind the scenes are many students who are seldom given recognition, such as Heather Dannen, Laurie Labhart, and Lida Herburger, Scene-Drome's news writers; without them we'd have nothing to present. Marina Clark has also been a valuable member as the staff artist, creating posters and survey covers. Marking our record list has been Judy Cudney, a thankless job but necessary. As I leave the halls of Grant, I'm confident that Robin Poppino will be a faithful leader and Scene-Drome will thrive---with your support. 36 FRESHMAN CLASS FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS (Seated) Colleen Hendricks, Secretary-Treasurer Sam Berry, Vice President Ellen Stevens, President (Standing) Loren Stout, Class Representative Mike Moore, Class Representative 37 Dennis Adkins FRESHMAN Anna Bentley Debra Bentley Ann Brown Walter Campbell Randy Carlson Clenton Catron Pat Clark Linda Colbert Vicki Colton just camera’ shy Kris Curtis Karen Daggett Jim Dieker Carolyn Farley Sherry Fiebiger Dan Howard Tim Hueckman Gary James Cheri Jensen Jackie Johnson Jane Kuizenga Trudy Lenz Tracy Lewis Michelle Liberty Pamela McCaige Richard Lakey V I Dan McGetrick Sandy McKinnis Lee Majors Kay Mascall Dale Maxwell FRESHMAN Sandra Mills Laura Moles Virginia Mook Mike Moore Jim Norria Bob Owens Kernie Perkins Brent Persinger Sherry Phillips Jeanette Ray Steve Rickman Kathy Robinson Sally Sams Mary Shanley Jerry Sheldon Edith Smith Cas Sprouffske David Steele CLASS Jack Thomas Michelle Trafton Farrell Traughber Jan Valade Rick Valade Lew Wallenmeyer Steve White Carol Williams Virginia Wilson Rebekah Working Sherry Wynne November 18, 1970 Dear Diary, Today the Home Ec. girls entertained their mothers and other high-school girls at Fashion Show and Tea. The Grant Union Prospectors started out the season with one of the youngest, most inexperienced teams in Grant’s recent history. Only two seniors, Ken Mills, and Bill Shanley, co-captains for the team, were on the squad. All the rest were eager but inexperienced juniors. Lack of height was another problem for the fighting Prospectors to overcome. The schedule was one of the toughest in recent years. Every team we played all year long was or had been rated in the top 20 at their respective divisions. The Prospectors found going rough in the early part of the season but started putting things together toward the end of the year and finished strong, win- ning 2 of their last 3 games. Kenny Mills was named Most Inspirational Player and Ron Lundbom, Most Valuable. Patty Holland Debbie Asher Heather Dannen Anna Jo Boyd Margo Lemons Dear Diary, The life of varsity cheerleaders is a very active one. Not only must they spend much time practicing and working out new routines, but also attending all home and away games. At times this year, the squad has been split up, part attending a basketball game at another school while the others remained at home to support the wrestlers. They're a fine group of young men and it was a pleasure working with them, stated Coach Gene Winnett. The Frosh finished with a fine 15-3 record, including a 13- game winning streak highlighted by a 129-19 massacre of Burns. Twenty-six individual and team records were tied or broken. Sam Barry and Clent Catron dominated the individual statistics. Barry led in FG%, points, and points per games (21.2). Catron led in rebounding (14.8 per game) and was a close second in scoring (19.2) and FG%. Dan McGetrick was a tremendous playmaker who ran the team and collected 32 assists, while Loren Stout was fine long-range shooter. Both played excellent defense. Tim Hueckman was Dan's backup man—in the process he led the team in FT% and had 22 assists. Mike Moore was a great help when the team was shorthanded later in the year; Cas Sprouffske, Jim Dieker, Brent Persinger, and hustling Kenny Holliday all helped make this a most memorable season. WRESTLING Even though this year marked the second season of wrestling competition for Grant Union, it was the first year for straight varsity action. 1970-71 was a year of continued growth for the Wrestling Program. The school registered two dual match victories, and the squad turn-out was more than doubled. Another coach, Mr. Carl Johnson, was added. Several boys did well during the season: Stewart Jensen, Jim Cernazanu, Tom Boyer, Wayne Elliott, Kelly Olp, Mark Secord, Bruce Campbell, and Ken Speakman. Several freshmen learned a great deal and displayed strong improvement. Ken Speakman was awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler trophy and Chet Kirkpatrick was selected as the Most Inspirational member of the squad. As usual each class selected their sweetheart couple to vie for king and queen. After the promenade march to the front of the gym, senior couple Jack Seebart and Barbara Kalin were crowned as Sweetheart King and Sweetheart Queen. SWEETHEARTS Loren Stout Sherry Wynne Jennifer Weil Javier Goirigolzarri Dear Diary, F H A The FHA has been doing many things during the school year. As our first money-making project, we sold popcorn balls at some of the football games. Our group also gave money to UNICEF this year. For our Christmas Project, we sold centerpieces of green, red and yellow. Each teacher received one as a Christmas gift. The FHA girls gave Mrs. Benson, our advisor, a housecoat for Christmas. The girls decided to reward her for all she has done for the student body and faculty. As in previous years, we sold cookbooks. We made Valentine favors for the hospital and nursing homes. We used pipe cleaners to represent arms and legs and pink paper hearts as bodies. As our last project for the year, we made Mother's Day favors for our mothers. Our officers this year are (seated in picture below): Teresa Pereira, historian; Mary Ann Rhoads, reporter; Debbie Hasher, vice president; Georgene Hansen, presi- dent; Julie Reynolds, secretary; Mary Gillis, treasurer; Nancey Stratton, parliamen- tarian. Even though the class was so late in giving this dance, all freshmen were admitted free. Admission charges were unique. Those seeking admission were charged 10 t for every inch their foot measured. For couples the boys paid the foot fee, plus 25 t for his date. The dance was well attended by the lower classmen with a few upper classmen present also. SENIOR PLAY—“MISTER CO-ED” May 14-15, 1971 Dear Diary, The senior class play, Mister Co-Ed, was a delightful comedy in which Lotus Smith (Bill Shanley), actually a cowboy from the West, masquerades as a college girl in order to insure the financial aid for the all-girls' college from his unknown grandmother. His true identity is rudely disclosed, leading to many complications... and an ending satisfactory to almost everyone. Members of the cast had many chances to express varied emotions and actions typical of their occupations and portrayed these well. TWO COMPETE IN STATE TRACK MEET Dear Diary, Grant Union fielded its first group of young men who competed as a track team and broke the tradition of competing as individuals. Led by the example of the senior members of the squad, these boys developed their skills to a level which won the Prairie City Invitational meet. Individual honors went with Bob Griffith and Ken Mills, who represented our school at the State Track Meet. Mills ranked 7th in the pole-vault and Griffith finished 5th in the javelin competition. THE PROM May 1, 1971 Dear Diary, Tonight the Junior-Senior Prom was held; its theme was A Time for Us. After the Prom Princesses and Princes were introduced, along with their junior escorts, Steve James and Cathy Baucum were crowned Prom King and Queen. The setting for the Prom was beautifully decorated in tones of pink and blue. The white ceiling studded with gold stars added a special glam- orous effect. The star-sprinkled entry, a mural, a stairway to a large star, a wishing well, and banks of flowers were added touches to the room. The traditional banquet was changed to an outdoor barbecue, which was enjoyed by most of the juniors and seniors. The senior prophecy, will and history were read. The Mar-Mel-Ter- Beths sang. HURLERS END SEASON IN A WHIRLWIND OF WINS Dear Diary, The 1971 Baseball Season started slow and ended in a whirlwind of wins. The Prospectors, very young and inexperienced at many positions, opened the season by dropping their first seven games. Then they caught fire, winning 10 of the last 13 games, including a double header victory over Vale, knocking them out of the league championship. Steve Denney, star pitcher, was injured in an auto accident and missed the first three weeks of the season. He fought back courageously and posted a 6 win 2 loss record in leading Prospector hurlers. Opposing batters hit only . 187 off Denney, his E. R. A. was 2. 38. Greg Eddy, junior hurler, improved tremendously. Eddy posted a 4-4 record, a 2. 56 E. R. A. and opponents could only muster a . 169 batting average off Eddy. Bill Hueckman led all hitters with a . 325 average and drove in the most runs — 11. Dan McGetrick, freshman and first baseman, led in hits with 15 followed by Soph, catcher, Dewey Warner, with 14. Grant's defense was strong all year. Led by Craig Curtis's outstanding outfield play and Ken Catron's great play at 3rd and Dewey Warner's fine catching, the Prospectors made few bobbles in the field. The Prospectors turned in six double plays. Steve Denney received the Most Valuable Player Award. Donn Willey received the Most Inspirational Player Award.
