This year's Girls Athletic Association added new functions to their club activities. The girls enjoyed a bike ride to Holliday Park near Mt. Vernon, and a sledding excursion at the Star Ridge slopes. G. A. A. girls spent the winter in a variety of sports; bowling, volleyball, and basketball, for example. Finally, when beautiful weather came, the girls went outside for some rollicking games of baseball. The year's activities were concluded with a swim- ming party at the Prairie Hot Springs resort. Here Mrs. Talus, club advisor, awarded the pins and awards to members. This page is sponsored by: MILLER'S FURNITURE STORE John Day FARMER'S INSURANCE COMPANY 301 W. Twas an eerie October evening late in 1969, as Scene-Drome '69-70 slowly emerged from the realms of its KJDY studios. The new, county- wide youth radio broadcast originated in the halls of Grant Union High School under the careful handling of Mike Johnson and the cooperation of the Grant Union faculty and administration. The program is produced in the interest of teens county-wide and aired weekly, live and direct from the broadcasting studios of Radio KJDY. This was the first year for Scene-Drome, but not the last. We hope to make it a permanent part of being a Grant county youth. --Kay Hildebrand. Varsity baseball team had a highly successful 1970 season, finishing 12-9 overall. In league play, Grant finished the regular schedule in a 3-way tie with Vale and Burns for first with a 7-5 record. Losing the coin flip, which determined who drew the bye in the subsequent playoff, proved disastrous. Steve Denney won the first game against Burns, thanks to Dan Lissman’s game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth. The second game, however, was too much in one day, as Vale easily defeated Grant. This page is sponsored by MacGILLIVRAY INSURANCE AGENCY 130 N. To become eligible for the playoff, Grant swept a doubleheader from Nyssa in spectacular fashion. Denney was masterful in the first game, pitching Grant Union to a 6-1 victory. In the second game, all seemed hopeless with 2 outs in the last inning and Grant trailing by four, but Mike Hendricks ripped a grand slam homerun to tie the score--Grant went on to win in 9 innings. Denny was again credited with the pitching victory. Throughout league play, Rick Elliott was tops in all-around play, with able assistance from Captain Art Thunell -- the finest catcher in the league--Doug Lee, Mike Hendricks, Larry Lent, Gary Lenz, Dan Lissman, Steve Denny. But Steve's major contribution was his superb 72 1 3 innings of pitching with 51 strikeouts, only 22 walks, a 2.42 ERA, and an 8-2 record with two shut- outs. JOHN DAY VALLEY PACKING CO. W.
