t in Things to Come.... 1966 Prospector GRANT UNION HIGH SCHOOL JOHN DAY. OREGON A Hand in Things to Come At the conclusion of four full years. We slip from the hand which has molded us To face life as individuals. These four years will be remembered and cherished; If we have successfully met their challenge Of responsibility and opportunity. We can be proud and confident. Facing the future with Youth, enthusiasm, and ambition. Each one of us will have A hand in things to come, Whether we become parents, Dentists, chemists, or lawyers. The quality of our four years here Determines the quality of our future. Our role may, or may not. be worthwhile; It is up to us and the way we apply Ourselves, our knowledge, and our abilities. --The Editors Grant Goes to District! By winning second place in league play, Grant Union earned a berth in the District Tournament, held in LaGrande, March 12-13, 1965. In their first game they downed Nyssa 52-51 in a tight, seesaw game. In the championship game on Saturday night, Grant lost to Heppner by a score of 45-53, to take second place in the district. In our regular league, Mike Conklin and Brad Ward were named to the First Team. Pictures on the next page are action shots taken at the District Tournament by the regular staff photographer for The Blue Mountain Eagle. Senior Class History The class of 1966 entered high school with 56 green-horned freshmen. We began the year by electing Steve Waterman president. Our other officers were Ronna Boyer, vice president; Janet Beverage, secretary; Tom Skiens, treasurer; and our class representatives were Norman Bezona and Kathy Cole. Kathy Cole was elected a J. V. cheerleader during our freshman year. As Homecoming princess we elected Linda Weeks. The freshman class usually gets the booby prize in the Homecoming noise parade; that year we were no exception. In the spring we chose as Sweetheart prince and princess Norman Bezona and Jean Ann White. Throughout the year we had various money-making projects. As we enrolled during the first day of our sophomore year, we were 54 in number. The officers for this year were Brad Ward as president; Steve Waterman, vice president; Paralee Simmons, secretary; and Ronna Boyer, treas- urer. Our first project was the Freshman Welcome Dance. We used monkey faces and palm trees as our main decora- tions. Sophomore girls who served as majorettes were Judy Weldin and Paralee Simmons. The Sweethearts for this year were Janey Lemmons and Jim Wham. Our Homecoming princess was Janet Beverage and again this year we re- ceived the booby prize. Janet Beverage was a J. V. cheerleader during our sophomore year. During this year Elizabeth Molina, a foreign-exchange student from Honduras, spent several months at Grant. To lead us, we elected Paralee Simmons our president. Norman ”Ab Bezona became vice president; Janet Beverage, secretary; and Stan LeGore, treasurer. Our class re- presentatives were Kathy Cole and Hart Culp. This year's Homecoming princess was Judy Weldin; the Sweetheart couple was Carol Thomson and Tim Scott. Janet Beverage and Ronna Boyer were elected to varsity yell leaders for the next two years. Junior majorettes were Judy Weldin and Carol Thomson. They also served during our senior year. During Christmas vacation and spring vacation the John Day area suffered from severe floods. Unfortunately, no school was missed. The Junior-Senior Prom theme was Isle of Paradise. We used three different shades of blue and three large murals painted by Mrs. Ward. These were scenes from Hawaii. Our other main project of this year was our play, Dear Diary. The major roles were portrayed by Ronna Boyer, Bill Williams, Margaret Rudishauser, Bill Morris, and Stan LeGore. This year our basketball team went to district play-off in LaGrande. Juniors on the squad were Steve Water- man, Brad Ward, Stan LeGore, and Andy Bond. We took second place after a very thrilling final game. The Drill Team performed at halftime on the first night; many junior girls were members of this group. As we entered the portals of Grant High, we had only one main ambition.......GRADUATION. We were the smallest class this year, numbering only 44 students. This year our officers are: Bill Morris, president; Bob Van Voorhis, vice president; Barbara Zickler, secretary; Carol Thomson, treasurer; with Linda Cates and Henry Lissman as class representatives. The only Student Body officer from the senior class is Bruce Cameron. He won the presidential post on an in- dependent ticket, a fete accomplished for the first time in Grant's history. Other seniors leading organization of our school are: Paralee Simmons as Pep Club president; Ronna Boyer, president of G.R.A.A.; Norman Bezona, Lettermen's president; Stan LeGore, president of National Honor Society; and Carol Thomson, president of F.H.A. The Homecoming princesses this year were Kathy Cole and Linda Smoot. We chose Paralee Simmons and Stan LeGore, Judy Weldin and Bob Van Voorhis as the Sweethearts couples. Those elected for Junior-Senior Prom princesses were Ronna Boyer, Kathy Cole, Linda Cates, Janet Beverage, and Carol Thomson. Linda Cates reigned over Prom Queen. Linda Cates won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow pin. Steve Waterman wrote all the varsity sports stories for the school paper. Bill Williams won the local, regional, and state Conservation speech contest and will try for national honors. Now, our last and most important activity at Grant Union High School will be our long-awaited graduation! 82 Looking into th Future ... 83 m INTER-COLLEGIATE PRESS Kansos Citv — Winnipeg Yearbooks — Yearbook Covers Diplomas — Graduation Announcements USA in Things to Come It .V'V- • aa --A-: 'tm:1WM c.Uc. - r S- T srs v - % - -W. .
