Foreword Since we believe that Grant County has as beautiful scenery as any locality, we have featured several pages of scenes throughout this book. We wish to thank Tom Biggars, of Canyon City, for the use of his negatives for these pictures. The end pages of this annual are an aerial photograph of John Day; the lake pictured is Strawberry; one scene shows a view of Canyon City; while another is taken of the fossil-bed area below Dayville, which the sophomore Biology classes visit each year, and others are typical of Grant County. THE STAFF. Our School Board Our Grant Union High School District 3 is composed of several communities, each represented by a member on the School Board. These include John Day, Canyon City, Seneca and Bear Valley, and Izee. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS -- Sig Ellingson, Chet Arnett, A1 Reynolds, Chairman; Oliver Campbell; George Hansen, and Harveie Ringen, Clerk.

Our Superintendent Speaks. . . Public education has been founded on the belief that all individ- uals can be improved, and as we improve individuals so we improve society. In consideration of these beliefs it would be fallacious not to consider that societies perpetuate themselves by the contributions of those who have passed before them. In accepting these contributions it is our responsibility in turn to sow so that those who follow might harvest. I would, therefore, challenge each of you to evaluate your contribution to society not from what you reap, but from what you sow.

Dedication lilii:::. Illli!::. We dedicate this 1961 PROSPECTOR to Gary Hutchinson, whose active years in our high school were cut short by an automobile accident last summer. Although he is now at Providence Hospital in Port- land, Oregon, his cheerful smile and pleasant person- ality will always remain in our hearts, thoughts, and minds.
