V ? y - The Annual Staff proudly presents 61 Prospector of Grant Union High School John Day, Oregon ANNUAL STAFF MEMBERS Co-editor...................Carole Davis Co-editor.....................ciif Drew Lay-out Manager.........Gay Oliver Business Manager . . Darlene Thunell Advisor .... Mrs. Frieda Sprouffske Our Superintendent Speaks. . . Public education has been founded on the belief that all individ- uals can be improved, and as we improve individuals so we improve society. In consideration of these beliefs it would be fallacious not to consider that societies perpetuate themselves by the contributions of those who have passed before them. In accepting these contributions it is our responsibility in turn to sow so that those who follow might harvest. I would, therefore, challenge each of you to evaluate your contribution to society not from what you reap, but from what you sow. Foreword Since we believe that Grant County has as beautiful scenery as any locality, we have featured several pages of scenes throughout this book. We wish to thank Tom Biggars, of Canyon City, for the use of his negatives for these pictures. The end pages of this annual are an aerial photograph of John Day; the lake pictured is Strawberry; one scene shows a view of Canyon City; while another is taken of the fossil-bed area below Dayville, which the sophomore Biology classes visit each year, and others are typical of Grant County. THE STAFF. Our School Board Our Grant Union High School District 3 is composed of several communities, each represented by a member on the School Board. These include John Day, Canyon City, Seneca and Bear Valley, and Izee. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS -- Sig Ellingson, Chet Arnett, A1 Reynolds, Chairman; Oliver Campbell; George Hansen, and Harveie Ringen, Clerk. Dedication lilii:::. Illli!::. We dedicate this 1961 PROSPECTOR to Gary Hutchinson, whose active years in our high school were cut short by an automobile accident last summer. Although he is now at Providence Hospital in Port- land, Oregon, his cheerful smile and pleasant person- ality will always remain in our hearts, thoughts, and minds. L. J. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names and set our seal this fifteenth day of May in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Sixty-One. President Vice- Pres. Advisor Cl ass History 1957-1961 May 24, 1961 Dear Diary, At last we have reached our goal of the past four years, Graduation Day! Before we walk out to meet the world, I am writing down a few of the things we did together and enjoyed so much at Grant Union. It seems as if it were only yesterday that 64 of us entered these halls as lowly fresh- men. After getting acquainted with the classrooms and teachers, we elected our class officers. They were president, Wayne Warren; vice-president, Jim Grider; secretary, Sharon Thomasson; and representatives, Sandy Shields and Tim Farrell. Then came Initiation, which was a mixture of fun and work. We were given a Welcoming Party by the class of ’60, to show that there were no hard feelings. We later gave them a return party. Our money-making project for that year was the Jelly Bean contest. It seems like ages before we discarded our title of green freshmen and became sophomores. Hal Williams was our president, with Tim Farrell as vice-president, Carol Holliday as secretary-treasurer, and Carol Tuttle as representative. That year we gave the Welcome Party for the new freshmen. Paul Steele was president our junior year, and we accomplished quite a bit. Rex Moles was vice-president, Sandy Shields as secretary, Eddie Newton as treasurer, and Hal Williams and Carol Carpenter as representatives. We had several money-making projects that year. We sold refreshments at the games, novelties, and magazine sub- scriptions. In December we gave a Christmas Dance, which was a great success. Santa himself dropped in to wish us the season’s greetings. That spring we gave our Junior class play, “Beef Stew”. We spent many hours preparing the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet, with the theme of “Paradise of the Deep”. During the summer, following this junior year, Carole Davis and Sharon Thomasson attended Girls’ State. Hal Williams, Rex Moles, Clif Drew, Eddie Newton, and Paul Steele represented us at Boys’ State. Also, Paul Steele made the United Nations Tour from this district, a great honor for him and for our school. And then, at last, we were high and mighty seniors. Through all the years, we have looked forward to this one the most--to the initiation of the freshmen and finally to our Graduation. Rex Moles led us, with Bertie Hutchinson, MikeShowmaker, and Bill Haworth as his vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. As Student Body officers Hal Williams served as president, Sandy Shields as vice-president, and Sharon Thomasson as secretary. Carole Davis headed the GRAA; Eddie Newton was elected president of the Varsity Club with Rex Moles and Tim Farrel to serve as his vice-president and secretary-treasur- er. Fred Elligsen was elected as head of the newly-organized Debate Club with Paul Steele as his treasurer. Our class play this year was “Mrs. Plaster of Paris”, starring Sharon Thomasson. We also had our traditional Sadie Hawkins Dance. The juniors gave us a lovely banquet and prom with the theme of “Some Enchanted Evening”. Queen Linda Robinson looked so lovely with her court of Carole Davis, Sandy Shields, Rosalie Looney, and Karen Perkins. Baccalaureate Services were held on May 21. Today, one of the greatest in our lives, has finally arrived. We have received our diplomas and are about to start our new lives. Our four years in this school has been a great experience and now that we have finished, may we always remember them. She meets a number of ‘odd’ people there and finally locates the murderer through her husband’s ring which is given her by a suitor, Tom Bigbee. In the meantime she brings a young couple together to the satisfaction oftheir mothers. Sharon Thomasson had the feminine lead while Fred Elligsen was the suitor whom she exposes. The money of Honduras is the lempira which was names in honor of an Indian, the first patriot of Honduras, whom the Spaniards treacherously murdered. “I think the school here is pretty and that the students are very friendly; but I am sad. fori will not see my family for two and a half years. Perhaps my mother may come here to see me in 1962.” Ramon Al verez Our Foreign Student Ramon is only 13 years old, but his school- ing is equivalent to that of our eighth grade. For the first week or two he visited various classes with members of the Student Council; after that time, a class schedule was set up for him and he attended classes with the fresh- men. Next year he will be registered formally as a freshman and attend classes with them. Already he seems to feel at home in our school and among our students. However, much valuable experience was gained which will help make next year’s team much stronger. This year’s team was a young team, com- posed of five sophomores, including Willis Sintay, Andy Conforth, Jim Lenz, Jerry Gibson and Alva Bliss; two juniors, Tom West and Joe Gaare; and three seniors, Hal Williams, Clif Drew, and Garry Allen. The Prospectors made up for their lack of size in hustle and aggressiveness. Leading scorer and floor leader of the Prospectors was hustling Captain Hal Williams.
