foreword This year the annual staff has tried to collect the events and happenings of this school year. We hope you have as much fun reading this year’s annual as we have had making it. Principal 's Message The Grant Union High School faculty is presenting an educational program that will enable our students to be better adjusted to our rapidly changing society. The society of the United States of America is a society in transi- tion. Our schools, because of this trend, are also in a period of transition. Traditional ideas need to be rethought in relation to conditions which have changed, in greater or less degree, since the ideas were first formulated. The conditions of life under which men and women live and make a living, under which boys and girls attempt to grow to maturity, have been radical- ly transformed by the forces of science and technology. In recognition of these facts, our school is making every effort to meet the demands of so- ciety. 4 “fa Memoriam To DAVID LYONS and TERRY GENTIS, we very humbly dedicate our annual in hopes that it will preserve the memories we have formed of them. Although their High School lives were cut short, those of us who knew them will always remember them. 5 Contents foreword 3 Principal’s Message 4 'Dedication 5 School Hoard 7 faculty 8-10 Classes Seniors 12-23 {Juniors 26-29 Sophomores 31-33 dreshmen 35-37 Sports Sootball 40-42 Hasketball 43-48 Haseball 77 Activities Hand 50-51 C-A-A- 4 JCettermen 53 Pep Hand 6 71 School Uoard Oliver Campbell, Albin Reynolds, Norman Cox, George Hansen. Band played A Blossom Fell everyone danced in a beautifully decorated room of spring atmosphere. Promptly at 11:00 P. M. President Don Hendrix crowned Queen Karen Lemonds to a successful reign attended by princesses Lillian Sintay, Lynne Redman, Annetta Hutchinson, and Rosie Edwards. The theme A Blossom Fell was very appropriate for the delightful and gay occasion. OUR GLORY LIES NOT IN NEVER FALLING BUT IN RISING EVERY TIME WE FALL” The Junior-Senior Banquet was held April 21 in the High School Cafeteria. The room was effectively decorated in silver and blue, the class colors. Mr. Hicks gave the address to the classes. Don Hendrix, Junior Class President, acted as Master-of-Ceremonies and Bobby Wagner, Senior Class President, gave the farewell address in behalf of the Seniors. 6? 1958 Junior-Senior Prom Senior Prophecy Rome, Italy Feb. 29, 1969 Dear Gloria, We just returned from our vacation in America. We are writing to tell you how successful the Class of '59 reunion was. We all regret your absence but we understand how busy a Paris dress designer's schedule is, as we have connections with the fashion world. We were chosen to inform you of the fields chosen by the members of the class. Gary Krigbaum has opened the Plantation Club in Little Rock, Ark. It is a club open to bi- cycle riders only. We overheard Tom Larkin, the main stock holder of Blitz Brewery, owned by Joe West and Ted Saunders, complaining to Duane Turner, Private Detective, that he is losing money on his stocK because the end product has been mysteriously disappearing. Duane agreed to take the case along with his partner, Larry Larkin. We talked to Larry later about this previous case. He went on to tell us about his latest case which was the divorce between Tommy Sheets and Linda Lemonds. As you know Tommy is the well- known movie star and Linda couldn't put up with his popularity. Tommy's latest movie, Kiss of Fire” was produced by Nicky Jackson and directed by Curtis Affeld. It co-stars Brenda Asher. Sandra Van De Hey and Alice Maher have opened a cigarette shop by the Prairie Maid for the weed beaters of G. U. H. S., but business has been poor lately. As you probably know Althea Curtis, Doris Crisp, and Alice Munter have opened a school for yell-leaders in New York City. They are doing quite well. While we're on the subject of New York City a couple of the inhabitants of Greenwich Village are well-known models and their names are Janice Boe and Arlys Anvinson. JoAnn McDowell grew that extra inch she needed to be an airline stewardess. She and Lilly Palmer both work for T. W. A. out of Los Angeles. Jamie White and Terry Farrell are co-owners in a business called Bottle Capping. Carol Campbell, Frances Prewitt, Carolyn Harrison, and Peggy Kelly joined the WACS a year after graduation and all are now staff sergeants. Sonja Burt now owns a 5,000 acre Arabian horse ranch in New Mexico. Ruthie Seebart is a horse dealer and is now in Saudia Arabia. Beverly Brown married John Mellin, as you probably knew would happen. John extended his career in the Navy and Bev is now Mrs. Rear Admiral. Eddie Arnett and Ken Smith are big game hunters in Africa. Their latest hunt was for a prehistoric animal for Dr. Max Merrill, the multi-millionaire scientist. Judy Patterson, Dr. Mer- rill's secretary, made the arrangements for this fantabulous hunt. Ted Ostberg, Buddy Davis, and Loren Bezona all batch on Snob Hill in San Francisco where they throw the exclusive parties for the movie stars. They are professional party givers. Don Hendrix and John Maple are co-starring in an hour long T. V. western called Baverick. They play the parts of Mret and Mart and they alternate every week. It is produced by Mike Steele. Larry Wilmarth and Roger Wirch are working for the State Forestry in John Day. Dallas Shoun has his own western band called The Happy Strummers . Tommy Griffith, Alan Johnson and Keith Lyons are co-owners of the T. A. K. car manu- factures in Detroit, Michigan. That about winds it up. We think we have told you what every one is doing. The plot of the play was to marry off the Professor's old- est daughter to a big league baseball player who was en- gaged to a movie star as a publicity stunt. We, the annual staff, have tried, to the best of our meager abilities, to present student life at Grant Union High School. We hope, as you turn through the pages of the Prospector, you will see a cross section of the events and hap- penings of the 1959 school year. ” 69 “Sluicebox” Staff The Sluicebox staff hasnft been very successful this year mainly because we didn't have any class time to work on it. And, it seemed that there were a lot of members on the staff that were allergic to staying after school. Of course, some of them have very valid excuses because of jobs, other practices, and some just couldnTt stay after school. We have gotten out a few issues, not regular however; of course the ones that were put out could stand some improvement. But with a little more experience the students next year should be able to put out a regular monthly paper. This page sponsored by: GLOVER’S MARKET, DR. ROBERT E.
