A fourth year is available to seniors, but is not required. Among courses which are included in English are gram- mar, American literature, and English literature. mathematics There is quite a variety of courses in the math department at Grant. Some are: general math, commercial math, algebra, geometry, and trigonornetry. Two years are required to gradu- ate. Histofnl Another requirement for graduation is his- tory. A course that helps seniors prepare for the problems that will face them later as citizens of the United States is Problems of Democracy. fdnglldge Two years of language are required for all college prep students. The ones taught at Grant are: Latin, Spanish, and German. XX YQ cience General science, biology, chemistry, and physics are some of the classes in science offered to the students of Grant. They are designed to help us obtain a better understanding of things around us. 1711 ome Economics Child care, family relations, as Well as cook- ing and sewing fall under the title of home ec. These classes are open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All of these classes are designed to further the knowledge of future homemakers. f Lrg Gif :ILL Among the students at Grant art is a very popular class. After taking beginning art, stu- dents may take advanced art, silk screening costume designing, and advanced commercial art gate Dfziving This course is open only to students that have reached legal driving age. If you take this Course and successfully complete it, an actual license may be obtained. This is not only an interesting course, but is quite essential. Students who take safe driving learn the responsibilities of having and operating a vehicle. gusiness 'machines Some of the commercial subjects offered at Grant are: typing, business machines, junior business, shorthand, bookkeeping, filing, senior business, business fundamentals, and transcrip- tion. Typing is the most essential class for both boys and girls. mechanical Dfzawing Under the direction of Mr. Schlegel, mechani- cal drawing classes are open for both the be- ginner and the advanced. All boys and girls alike should be interested in this course, for it is essential in the field of engineering. filwaful Mrs. Cole, our librarian, is always on hand in the well-equipped library at Grant. The boys and girls who work in the library are well- in- formed and can tell you right away where any book or any kindnof information can be found in the library. This is a very worthwhile course to take. feaflmefzcfzagf p Bookmarkers, keycases, and purses are just a few of the many things that students make in the leathercraft classes. They learn to carve initials and designs into leather and how to lace leather. F aufomofive mechanics It won't start. I wonder what's wrong this time. If you took auto mechanics, you would probably know right away what was Wong. One good thing about this class is that you get to work on your own car right in class. Every boy interested in cars would be wise to take this COUTS9. pie-Qizcwff In this class you learn the fundamentals of the structures of airplanes. One also studies the repair and maintenance of aircraft. Czgfziculfwze If one wants to become a farmer, he must know about the soil, crops, irrigation, and about livestock. The class to take, then, is agriculture. woodslwp Nightstands, cedar chests, and tea tables are just a few of the many pieces of furniture that are made in the interesting woodshop classes. welding Welding is a must for all boys who wish to become mechanics. One learns in this course the operation of the acetylene and oxy-hydrogen torch and many other essential things. It is a very interesting class. V!! flA!'LJ3j The Grant Union Majorettes, under the direction of Herbert Oehler, have had a very successful season this year. They have marched at many football and basketball games and in parades. One they will not forget for a long time is the Santa Clara- Utah football gamey Where they put on 'Latin American Saga' Grant extends its hearty appreciation to head majorette Janet Keith on the Wonderful job she did leading the majorettes. Also a big hand goes to Evelyn Averill and Phyllis Carder, the acrobats. .:l:f?2'fz '- f S ,Vzgz--L L- - S 5 S V1 72-Sf TE.-'SIZE-'SM-AV i 2 f S ' Q 5--fm-215V-:i-his 1.-:gpg :f,,1V.f--fV,y,,?,w -if W wi-1-'--ge.sf1 - .wiw-27'fV K - Xxx sz X 'fi s if VW Wi fi -4 ' ' QQ ji. The Pacers held wins over San Juan, Christian Brothers, and the strong Turlock Bulldogs. The season opened with a win against San Juan. The following week, Grant played host to the Christian Brothers Gaels, and the Gaels returned home at the short end of a 24-13 score. The Pacers received their first taste of defeat at the hands of the Wood- land Wolves in a non-conference game. Grant next invaded the den of the strong Turlock Bulldogs and tucked in an impres- sive conference victory. The Pacers received their first conference loss when they played Drive On host to the Sacramento Dragons on Home- coming Day. The next game was a real thriller. The Panthers from Modesto, trailing through- out most of the game, pushed across a final touchdown with one minute remaining to defeat the Pacers 37-33. Following the heart-breaking defeat from Modesto, Grant lost four straight to Mc- Clatchy, Lodi, Stockton, and the trophy game with Woodland. Grant's Chuck 'Kuhl, Jose de la Rosa, and David Fase all placed on the Sacramento Bee's and Sacramento Union's All-City squads. Receiving honorable mention were Gary Adams, Andy Campos, David Prohor- off, and Fred Scott. -Kuhl also was top scorer of the city with 66 points. Victory Touchdown Varsity and J.V. Among their many activities this year they put on the short play Cup Of Tea. The one act play was put on by different casts for a double assembly. The casts consisted of Virginia Criss, Ed Cooper, Beverly Vereide, Phil Sanders, Phyllis Carder, Gary Posz, Steve Webster, and Edna Wagner. The startling success of the play was due to the efforts of two student directors, Donna Kitzero and Marlene Schucker. Early in December the organization held its fall installation at Donna Kitzero's home. Skits, dancing, pantomimes, and a general good time was had by all. The following were installed as the spring officers: Chuck MacCrone, presidentg Steve Webster, vice presi- dent, Phyllis Carder, secretary, Virginia Criss, trea- surer, and Gary Posz, sergeant-at-arms. Officers for the fall semester seated, Peggy Long, President! , . - - ne Clare, sergeant at arms, Marle er, secretaryg Ida Mae Hunt, and Phil Sanders, vice president. Planning the program One of the up and coming organizations on the Grant cam- pus isr the boys' athletic asso- ciation, namely the Block G Society. During the fall semester the club put on its third annual Bean Feed, in the Grant Tech social hall. Herm Meister, head line coach at U.C., was the guest of honor. Chuck Kuhl, Bob Greer, and Fred Scott, members of the Block G, were selected by the Sacramento sports writers as- sociation as Preps of the Week during football season. A dance was put on by the Block G in the early spring to bolster its treasury, and it was deemed a great success by all who attended. The officers for the spring semester are: Chuck Kuhl, president, Sonny Rolfe, vice presidentg Dick Clare, secre- taryg Gary Adams, treasurerg and Dave Fase, sergeant-ab arms. The officers for the fall sem- ester were: Chuck Kuhl, presi- dentg Dick Clare, vice presidentg Carl Rolfe, secretaryg Gary Adams, treasurerg and Lowell Lardie, sergeant-at-arms. Club officers for the fall term Chuck Mac Crone, presidentg Leuenberger, vice presidentg Lee Helfer, secretaryg Shirley treasurerg and Karl Baumheckel, geant-at-arms. The Junior Statesmen of Grant High have one aim and that is to give each student some knowledge of his government and.how it oper- ates. They meet several times a month with one meeting set aside for the study of parliamentary pro- cedure. In the fall the Statesmen held a kick-off party at Bob Skemp's home, and then with the ball in play they really went to town. In October they put on an assem- bly showing the history of Korea. In November there was the state convention at Bakersfield. In December, Clothes for Koreans drive was sponsered by the club. In January they were off to the region- al convention at Oakland. Truly one of the most active or- ganizations at Grant, they deserve a round of applause. .MJ C9 X ffl All Ji 5 A l ar y at o emp's The officers for the spring are: George Leuenberger, president Nancy Lee Helfer, secretaryg Gary vice president, Shirley Smith, tre Wayne Anderson, sergeant-at-arms Ball, parliamentariang Bob Skemp pervisor Calso a supervisor is Don Chaf fin who is not shown! Spjllll lil 5 M MUPNE 'z A f W, How did you get in here without a key? The January class of '53 presented as their senior play, Seven Keys to Baldpate, a melodrama in two acts by George M. Cohan. The crux of the affair is the trials and tribulations of a novelist named Magee. It seemed Magee made a Wager with the owner of Baldpate that he could Write a 10,000 Word novel in twenty-four hours. To do this Magee had to have seclu- sion and What is more secluded than a summer resort in the dead of Win- ter? Magee was introduced to the old place by the caretaker and his Wife. They revealed to him the story of some graft money put in the office safe by some crooked politicians. From these facts he Wove an inter- esting novel and ironically called it SEVEN KEYS TO BALDPATE. I e and Suha 11 Bollsjimah AIN OING CURTAIN GOING UP , by Gregory Johnston, is the story, in comic terms, of a play in high school, and the action takes place on the stage and in the auditorium. Among the myraid comic obstacles with which poor young Miss Burgess is faced fit is her first playj are the following: a grou- chy janitor with a sharp tongue, the dis- appearance of the playbooks the first day of rehearsal, a set of comically crossed-up high school romances, a charming young heroine who becomes stagestruck, her be- wildered boyfriend, a campus actor with aswollen head, the disgruntled athlete feel- ing out of place as an actor, a flamboyant professional actress with advice, a banker's daughter driven to theft and dirty tricks by her father's ambitions-and, perhaps most unexpected of all, a romance for young Miss Burgess herself! Almost everything that can happen does happen. And the solution to the mounting complications sets forth a most worth- while evening of enjoyment. CAST Lorry Fuller .........,........ Here's your receipt, sir! Whew! Finished at last! Y ' Ladies and Gentlemen, I am going to take you behind the scenes, to show you just what goes on in the making of the Trail Blazer. The time is fourth period on any Wednesday, the scene is Mr. Gilliam's room. Lights . . . Camera . . . ACTION! Hey! This paper is supposed to come out on Friday. Where is that copy ? Arch, where is the sports cartoon? What! The photographers haven't taken it yet? Well get them on the ball ! Copy boy . . . Copy Boy . . . COPY BOY! Oh, there you are, here take this down to the print shop . . . and hurry! Mr. Waters was supposed to have had that an hour ago. Diane, get Skemp on the phone and ask him where in the name of Grant Union High School did he put the Military Parade for this week ? Curtain Ah hah! you say, if that's all they do it must be a snap course. Perish the thought, my friend. Pull up a chair and let me tell you of the many intricate details that must first be completed in order for the paper to come out on time. As you will notice there are four pages in each Trail Blazer. Each page has an editor. The editor-in-chief, Diane Donsing, takes care of the front page, the feature editor, Sharon Foote, is in charge of the second page. She usually sees that the Question of the Week, Thumb- nail Sketches and local gossip are all in on time. As for the third page, well that's up to Karen Bengtson, girls sports editor. Karen has charge of selecting the Pacer, Pacerette and Teacher of the week, not to mention Gym Shorts, Reg News and other stories of centests, et al. The fourth page is devoted entirely to news of Grant's athletic teams. Norman Kempster, boys sports editor, is in charge of assigning stories and arranging this page. Now these editors are ably assisted in their work by reporters Gary Adams, Rita Bolton, Dick Clare, Sally Coburn, Alberta Krohnert, Carl Rolfe, Chuck MacCrone and Pat Smith, plus the beginning journalism class. After the editors complete their pages they submit them to Mr. Gilliam for correction. They fthe proofsj are then sent to the print shop where, under the supervision of Mr. Waters, Wayne Anderson, Jack Morrisseau, Ronald McMillan and Jack Westbrook put the words in type and print the paper. By this time it is Friday and time for the paper to be distributed to the class rooms. This is where Barbara Leaf, the circulation manager, takes over. , Hey . . . who threw that snow ball ? Track . . . loose ski! These cries and many more were fam- iliar to the members of the TEN AYA SKI CLUB. The club met every other week in Mr. Marks' room.
