Nearly two centuries have elapsed and we as a nation are still trying to achieve an ideal democratic state. As citizens of this nation, we are components of a society in which the majority rules. Occasionally this majority seems to be an overwhelming mass of lethargic individuals. Victimized by this situation, we have coined a phraseto rationalize our inaction, What can I do aloneto alter society? 'I'herein lies the problem, especially with youth. Today in a commercial environ- ment symbolized by instant coffee, we expect all our actions to manifest results, instantly. When we don't observe these instant results, we tend to rely on the what can I do? phrase. We must realize that those concepts which are slowly developed are often the most enduring. One does not assume a responsibility to his fellow man and his nation for the first time when he acquires the right to vote We as teenagers have a responsibility to our society, and this responsibility will grow as we grow. Our actions today, good or bad, influence those with whom we associate. One person who has strong convictions supplemented by persuasive actions can have a beneficial influence on those about him. In essence this is our responsibility as individuals: to search out our convictions, to develop a phi- losophy with definite standards, then to live according to our ideals. We as a nation cannot be a leader in world affairs unless we are able to resolve the problems in our own country. This, then, places the responsibility directly on our own shoulders. 5 The United States, founded by persons whose deep insight identified the rights of man, must rise above the forces of evil which would deny man his true place. Hate, greed, fear, a.nd pre- judice are warring for the soul of man at the heart of our free society just as they threaten from the launching pads of the totalitarian state. The only conceivable way to accept the challenge of the present is to produce persons with nigh ideals who are capable of serious and critical thought. Our educational system must stress studies which will stimulate individuals to achieve to their fullest capacity. Only in this way :an we retain our democracy: a way of life which is our heritage and which is imperfectly ex- wressed, imperfectly lived, but which is ever available, and-once lived--ever invincible. 10 wmgss.+4s., - President John wthorne 3 Vice President Quaid
