FAll EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MERLE WAlLIS,PRESlDENT The American education system is the product of the democratic society inwhich it exists, and it cannot change with- out a major alteration of society. The system will retain its hereditary infirmities. Superficial improvements may seem like radical changes, but the basic illness shall not be cured. The cancerous malignancy which threatens to dcstmy the society which created it is the insistance that the schools of this country produce well-rounded, confor- ming, socially adjusted patriotic citizens. Ido not advocate a society of misfits and malcontents, but we are pro- ducing :i generation of security-seeking clods that have been assimilated into one blob which will not be capable of the dynamic thought and action that a nation needs to maintain a position as a world power. I say beware the evils of too many activities and the false joys of the glorious social life. It is the duty of education to develop intellectual curiousity and mental maturity which stimulate the individual to serious thoughts and great ideas.
