When the season came to a close, the team had a record of six wins and one loss by actual scoringg but due to an ineligibility ruling ol the ad- ministration, the record was reduced to 2 wins and 5 losses - toppling Grant lrcm second to sixth place. The schools spirit, aided by the Grant band under Mr, Harold leans, was in keeping with Grant tradition and when the school boards ruling was an- nounced, the spirit rose to an all time high, inspiring an impressive 34 to O win over Franklin High School. As in the past Grant had All-City players on its roster: lim Damis, the leagues leading scorer, as halfhack, Iohn Narver, a center who won guard honors, and Tom Brown as a pass snagging end. Bob lacoby was second All- City quarterback and Gary Lansing was second All-City guard. Joe McDonald, Bill lones, Vern Scott, and loo Keilback gained honorable mention. Over the years our school has established a reputation for developing fine students and upright men and women. Your elass has done its part in upholding this reputation, and we are proud of you. Even though you are leaving us we trust you will remember that you will still remain one of us. As you leave your high school days behind you and enter into adult life we sincerely hope you will find yourself properly equipped to go forward to sueeess and happiness. The four brief but busy years since we welcomed the Class of 1953 have passed, and we must bid you a reluctant farewell - reluctant not because we fear for you as you leave Grant High but because we hesitate to break the relationship which has meant so much. Your teachers have striven to give you not only sound academic training but also have endeavored to develop in you high ideals, integ- rity of character, and an apprecia- tion of the worth of every person. As you leave school you will hear on all sides that the world is in such a turmoil that there is little hope for it or for the youth of today. Dont you believe it because wherever you go - college, military service, business e- you have the means to change the future if you steadfastly use your education to serve humanity as well as yourself. Our teachers have not only given us a textbook education, but they have also placed their confidence in us, and we shall so strive as adults to not betray that trust. Many have given us a great deal and have received little recognition. The scholarship counselor is one of these people, and we feel that we owe her a special debt. In aadition to her regular work, Mrs. Whitted has served us, as she has served the senior classes before us, as scholarship advisor. All the intricate college applications have been piled on her desk, and many times that pile has been carried home and worked over until late at night in order that some deadline might be met. She has also arranged for interviews, supplied necessary college information, and written many recommendations. It is largely due to her efforts and her sincere interest that many of us will be able to go to college. And so, Mrs. Whitted, for your work, your wonderful patience, and your understanding we, the seniors of 1953, especially thank you. he Memoirs Staff wishes to thank Elaine Deal ol the Art Staff lor helping us with lettering: Hal Lesser rantonian Editor, for assistance in photography: and Mr. Houde. our advisor. for patience beyond the call duty. gum-A x xo?- 'Y,l, x ego 40, Gov .Qc 'Vi' I Illlllllllfgfili E N? The team was composed entirely of sophomores and juniors with the exception of two seniors, Iohn Narver and lim Damis who were the teams honorary co-captains. We are all pround of Eli Morgan who secured the position of center on the all-city second squad. Coach Vern Butts can look forward to a successful season in 1954 with eleven returning lettermen who have rrfnried considerable experience in league play. Wo, the students ot Grant High School, should be proud of our team and of ourselves for the fine display of good sportsmanship. Only through the coordinated efforts of the rally squad, the athletic representative, and the student body, could this have been possible. ,..Q.1.,...,. o,i. ..,.,..,-.- . rl-Q,,..5-.1 il., iff G rc rr PF rr Avq. Coaches throughout the city peg Grant as one of the leaders in the 1953 baseball season. To date their expectations are visualized because after one round of play Grant is in second place with six wins and one loss. Coach Koch praises the hustle and pitching of his squad. Mound main- stays such as Gary Lansing, Iohn Lampros, Mike Menath, and Roland Heath, and hitters like Bob Iacoby and Iim White help keep Grant on top. The key- stone combination of Capt. Ierry Clark at short and second baseman lim White has pulled many a Grant game out of the fire. The outfield led by Tom Borst, Ioe MacDonald, and Ierry Elsasser has done their part in defending the outer pasture. We salute the Generals of 1953 and hope the second half of the league season is as successful as the first.
