This is true of individuals and institutions alike. Grant High School has cherished its ideals through the years. lt has at- tempted to inculcate fine aspirations in its students and to give to them a good scholastic base upon which to build. I sincerely hope it has done this for you. I also hope your years in this school have been happy ones and that you have enjoyed your association with us and with each other. I know the faculty and I have enjoyed working with-you and will be sorry to see you leave. Our best wishes will follow you always. I VICE - PRINCIPALS Four years of high school are now a meme oryl You seniors have anticipated your gradu- ation with mixed feelings. Most ol you already have decided what you hope to get out of life. Now you are ready to start getting But have you considered what you might give as well as get? What will you be able to give to your friends and neighbors? What might you contribute to your community, country, or world? You have as resources many talents, good training, special abilities, and ambition. But in your desire to get things from life be sure not to miss the joy of giving The worlds really great leaders gave freely of themselves for some cause they believed worthy. You too can discover that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Our four years of work and play together are ended. When the curtain falls at commence- ment you go forth, not as the class oi 1952, but as individuals. To some of you this is a challenge while to others it brings apprehension. However, al- though you leave as individuals, you do not go alone for with you go the love of your par- ents, the loyalty oi your friends, the precepts of your teachers and the guiding hand ot the Heavenly Father. You do not walk alone. Finally, in these days of world turmoil and confusion in our own land, with you goes your responsibility tor others. You dare not Walk alone. 1 Lett to right: Mrs Lillian Abel, Miss 1 Helen Barley, Mrs Betty Summers SCIENCE INDUSTRIAL ARTS AND FAMILY LIFE L. to R' William Eileriso El' . , ii h ' Ida oison, L' d ' n im et Dum' in a Smith, Cyril Builer. Under the guidance ot Miss Dorothy Iohnson, the library aids them in making reports and doing research. Often Miss Iohnson takes time out trofn her busy schedule to help English and history classes work on special subjects. At times like this the library annex is convenient. This year Grant's library is more functional than ever. Recently we have added a browsing corner in memory ot Elizabeth Caldwell McGaw, beloved dean ot girls tor many years. Miss Iohnson's student assistants are: lim Ten- Eyck, Murrell Peddicord, Pat Porter, Carolann Bass, Connie Kinser, Barbara Exley, Kurt Kessler, Marlene Maudry, Diane Foreman, lanet Iones, Iirn Timmons, Dorothy Spady, Io Ann Harding, Sharon Iones, Gayle Grittith and Kay Large. One of the least appreciated duties here at Grant goes on in a small inconspicuous room on the second floor. It is Room 208, the book room. Here Mrs. Blosser and her student assistants carry out the func- tions ot the department, distributing textbooks, maga- zines, and movies and getting operators for the pro- jection room. Student assistants in the work are: Canton Wil- son, Phil Strother, Terry Mills, Winona Delfel, Iim Maule, Sue Robertson, Brad Canutt, lack Rooney, David Baird, and Ed Feves. , 2 Test IOYUOUOW ,Q Y Miss johnson and , students in the browsing Come,- P. T. A. Mrs. William Padie President The Grant P.T.A., as usual, has been busy this year. Punchbowls and cups were purchased for the school's use. Selling ads for the Memoirs, helping with the Dad's Club Variety Show, selling football jamboree tickets, and sponsoring an advisor training class for clubs have been activities of the P.T.A. Installation of the sundial memorial was an additional job to keep them busy. The P.T.A. has also worked for the chest x-ray and Crusade for Freedom, and helped with a football banquet and centennial by serving, advertising, and costuming. A tour year scholarship for elementary teachers training has also been sponsored by them. The Memoirs Staff thanks the Grant P.T.A, in behalf of the school. 5 t 5 2 Q L DADS' CLUB ' . if I 1 i It 1 A A . . g W L 5 i I. X4 Mr. Ward Cook President The Dad's Club has done much to help our school. Nine jackets were given to the Boy's Octet, and scholarships have been a major project of the Dad's Club. The major letter winner with the highest qrade average will receive a scholarship. Other scholarships are also beinq awarded by them. Money has been donated for a baseball scoreboard and for reforestation of the Tillamook Burn area. Some of the freshmen dads also gave a banquet for the freshman football team. Each year this organization expands their work to make Grant a better place for the students. We feel that this year they have fulfilled this objective. .5 ii 5 5 A em Awww, , ii. i. if : -we ,. 1 - S s -a ss. 0 S . so l Q I gg-ns 1f qV W Andi ,ffl , X g us ' vw W fm' vu? We've filled all our schedule with valuable courses: We're ready for college, but we still have remorses. We've skipped school aplenty, but now we find out, Dear Old Grant is the best place-tis a fact without doubt. Where else will we find a beautiful campus, And Royal G members wearing clothes lit to shock us? Oh, where will we find Mr. Erickson's office, And where else will hall monitors try vainly to stop us? Ah, Senior Class Bench, cement starter ol fights, We'll nevermore see you, lest we visit you nights. And you, Cafeteria, with hamburgers tough, From now on we'll face food bills that'1l be twice as rough. We'll have taxes and landlords and children and dogs, Growly neighbors, cross bosses, cars wrecked in the logs, Milk bottles get broken, electric cords fray. We'll be parents with troubles, then it's we who must pay. So we look back on four years of nice, golden bliss, ll we lived our lives over, not one day would we miss. He has been ably assisted by the tall Student Body Vice-Presi- dent, Karol Elterich and the spring Vice-President, Anne Cham- bers. It is the Vice-Presidents job to manage the club system during her term of office. The clubs are classified according to their purpose or in- terest: social, service, interest, and honorary. Next in line come the three club councils each of which send representa- tives to the inter-club council. Throughout the year the clubs have sponsored innumerable projects and activities beneficial to the school, the community, or themselves. While the system here in Grant High School is changing constantly, we tind it is certainly being greatly improved and is greatly improving the school. INTERCLUB COUNCILS I' 'ak SPRING FALL Honor Society HON ORARY CLUBS The honorary clubs, Royal G and the Honor Society, have greatly in- creased their membership this year. Royal G is the athletic honorary, but it also contributes rruch in service to the school. The Honor Society represents those whose grades and scholastic achievements are exceptional. Both or- aanizations have participated in projects both inside and outside of school. Because there are only two, there is no Honorary Club Council or Honorary Club of the Term. Nevertheless both of these clubs have been actively inter- ested in promoting new ideas and projects and furthering their individual interests. 'V H f i 1' A-all Royal FALL Pres. C. Brattain V.Pres. Grant and Grants Pass were tied with the score at 14-14 at the end of the crucial game, but the first downs stood at 12 for Grants Pass and 9 for the Generals. Therefore the Cavemen from Grants Pass went home without winning the game, but with the cham- pionship trophy in their possession. , The Generals were fortunate in having Coach Ted Ogdahl, who was selected Coach of the Year, back for another year. Mr. Ogdahl with the help of the new line coach, Henry Pond, succeeded in pulling all the players into a smooth running team. The co-captains for the year were Creed Brattain and Iohn Keller. Keller piloted the team from his quarterback posi- tion and was selected for the All-city team as were guard Bill Dugan and end Ierry Exley. Dugan was also named to the All-state team. Even though the state championship was not won by the team, everyone agrees that it was a successful season. Dick Reneberg made the next touchdown after he, Zoelch, and Baker had set it up with runs mov- ing the ball from the 44 to the 2 yard llne- lacobs' kick was wide again. The second' quarter started with Fleneberg diving into pay-dirt from four yards out. Grants third try for extra point failed, With the second string in Grant scored against This time from Ev Stiles to Smith. l9l'fY X Exley came in to try his luck at extra points and made one. Iud Ioneg took the second half kickoff on the Grant 37 and started up the sidelines, All of a sudden he darted to the opposite side- line and raced to a TD for the final score of 31-0. S A if . :Kit is S E ' Vern Scott - Tackle V Bend 6 - Grant 21 Grant entered the state football tourna- ment for the sixth time with a win over the Bend Lava Bears. Bend recovered a Grant fumble early in the game and marched right on to a touchdown to put them in the lead with their first and last 6 points. The Generals then proved the fact that they play best when behind, by scoring on a pass from Keller to Exley. Wes Iacobs' kick for extra point was also good. In the next quarter Ron Baker cut loose for 30 yards setting up another TD. With Exley on the receiving end of another pass by Keller into the end zone, Grant went ahead 13-5. Iacobs booted successfully again. After long runs by the speedy G-Men backs, Baker and Zoelch, Keller changed targets and hit Tex Smith from ll yards out for another score. Iacobs then kicked his third straight extra point to close the scoring at 21-6. The last quarter saw the Grant second string doing a fine job with Ev Stiles piloting the team at quar- terback. Astoria 14 - Grant 26 Grant jumped its last hurdle toward the state championship playoff by down- ing a fighting team from Astoria. Early in the game Dick Pavlat, of Astoria, smashed through the Grant line and went 45 yards to a TD. He also kicked the extra point. One play after the kickoff, Reneberg flew down the left side, assisted by a beautiful block by Ron Baker, for 72 yards. After this touchdown Keller stepped back to kick but instead ran the extra point to tie the score at 7-7. lust before halftime Gustafson tossed to Brown in the end zone to put the Fisher- men ahead. Pavlat's conversion made halftime score, l4-7, Astoria. The G- Men came back fighting in the third quar- ter and promptly scored a TD on a pass from Keller to Texas Smith. Keller picked his favorite target, Exley, and threw him a pass for the extra point. Not long after, the same All Cit com- bination of Keller to Exley, chalked up 50 yards for 6 points. This time a pass for extra point failed. The last touch- down was scored on a smash through center by Reneberg. The try for point failed leaving the final score at 26-14. The game was not lost, however, as the score was tied at 14-l4, but the Cavemen had three more first downs than the G-men, and so they were crowned the new state champs. It was apparent early in the game that Grant was going to try to gain victory by passing. The Generals scored first on a pass to Zoelch from Keller from eight yards out. Exley kicked the all-important extra point, At this time in the game a serious blow was dealt to Grant with Reneberg being taken out on an injury for the rest of the game. Grants Pass' charging was stopped by the Grant line and then, late in the quarter, Keller sprung a new play by tossing a long pass to Zoelch, who grabbed it and went all the way to a TD. However, and off- side penalty nullified this possible winning touchdown. Halfway through the second quarter Fred Rehmus recovered a Grants Pass fumble deep in their territory. Short runs by Zoelch, Baker, and Damis took the ball to the four. After a pitchout from Keller to Zoelch, Zoelch squeezed through to a score. Again Exley made the con- version. The game had been all Grant's in the first half, but the Cavemen came surging back and changed everything in the sec- ond half. Exley tried to kick out of a dangerous hole, but the punt was blocked. The ball moved back and forth deeg in Grant territory, but finally Grants ass pushed a TD across, Defur kicked their extra point. At the beginning of the last quarter Knight scored Grants Pass' final touchdown from three yards out, and De- fur again kicked the point. This tied up the score and with each team battling furiously, the game ended in this dead- lock. At the final gun both teams stood quietly and waited for the announcement of the winner. Finally the loudspeaker broke the silence with, Grant, 9 first downs, Grants Pass, 12 first downs. . i 7 , mv In lorry Iolol tlfff uni' if Fullbacl: greLntELlow: Doug Lusner, Bob jacoby, terry Dirks, Nonert Duncan, Dick Dominey, .Buzz Boehm, Traver Campbell, Al Sodero 0 renstrom. bocond Row: Mr. Westcott, Art Amato, Bob Iacobs, Bob Ellerby,Kent Mays, Dick Allen, Allan Kirchoii, Bob Lewis, Ted Logsdon Third Row: lim West, lim Hoyt, Colm Beaudain, Flon Kamna, Frank Zell, Ierry Bolien, lack Taylor, Bob Pheister. The city league was started in 1926, when Grant -won the new championship. However, the Generals have not been able to equal this feat since that time. The 1952 team gained some significance, though, as Ierry Exley, who was named to the second string All-City team, broke two Grant scoring records. He scored 219 points in 14 games to raise the individual scoring record from 181 points set by Dan Torrey in 16 games during the '46 season. The following poem by Don Hewitt won Second Place THE MAID Look beyond the ville and see the cliti, Where the plains rise and roll to the cliff. Still here! Silent, a girl kneels on the soft, green grass, listening-- Soit, vibrant, still, come voices saying- France, singing- France, 'Tis the mighty Michel-with burnished blade that she alone may see! As the bells ring-France, The Bells sing--France, over the countryside ot Lorraine. At last belief from Him-1 And an army: a strong, gallant army of soldiers. But follow a stronger, gallanter, singers oi simple songs army, of peasant iolk. Clad in silver, singing, shining, iron rides the girl. Carry my pure banner high - Carry my white banner high, high into the clouds. Sing straight, strong and simple songs, tor the pure white banner. The great, grand and glorious iight tor God has begun- Strike! We are God's Army-Victory shall be ours! Leap over' the trenched walls, through dense, stenched, blood colored smoke! Choking, stifling lungs with the thick, crimson taste ot blood - And the moat is a sanguinary bog! Blasting trumpets bellow black, evil- The routed tyrants cry, The Witch! - The Devil! - The ldolatress! And the victorious proclaim, The Child ot God! As bells of gold, toll and roll, chimes- The Maid ol Orleans! The Blue Stillness of Victory. All is blue-gray, cool,-dead. But in Reims-the green schemes for gold, hard and cold. White long hands, selling the pure and white. Once in silver, singing, shining, ringing- Now sad, forsaken, uncertain,-forgotten. Down deep .in dark dungeon, dank with must. Weep on hard, cold, cruel stones. Unmelted by a child's tears. Pile the iaggots high-It will be quicker. Bundles of wicked, twisted sticks. My fear is gone! !Will the pain vanish too?J Bare feet on hateful, hard, heartless wood. tShe knows the secret! Rip at the heart unjust, writhing flames! Tear at the sweet heart oi a child! Victory is hers-not yours! Oh soul take wings! Soul, who quenches the fierce sting with angel tears! Pause in your celestial flight to write your name in the tire, And the people's hearts! Jesus, Jesus! 1. The Dauphin Charles the VII. Compliments and Best Wishes From the Medical Staff Providence Hospital Warrington Furniture and Upholsterers Co. 4712 N. E.
