Scott, who retired last year after twenty-three years of service as Vice-Principal. To this year's freshman class, Mr. Scott is a stranger, but classes of past years will always remember his help and guidance. He came to Grant from the chemistry department of Iefferson and was a steadying force during all but two of Grant's formative years. His office, with its big gray couch, was the home-away-from-home for the male stu- dents of Grant. At almost any time of the day one or more of these males could be found sprawled on the couch suffering from illness or those two other diseases which strike down such great numbers of students, chronic lack of homework and teacher's complaint. He gave more autographs than most celebrities, and his red-inked signature was sought for checks, excuses and sometimes, with regret, for suspension slips. The deten- tion list on his desk was long but well-deserved. Not only was Mr. Scott a disciplinarian, but he was a gentleman who always set a good example of honor and character for the boys of Grant. Under the guidance of our new Vice-Principal, Grant will continue to be the fine school it always has been. But Mr. Scott's place in the hearts of the faculty and graduates of this highvischool will never be erased. QDIVIINIQTDQTION 5 .. ' J QJ GCE VICE-PRINCIPALS Mary N. Schroeder has been Dean of Girls at Grant High School for the last four years. Dur- ing this time she has given invaluable aid to the Girls' League, its officers and projects, and all its members. The screening of all candidates for school of- fices, commencement ushers and the rally squad, is left to her good judgment. She must assign girls' detention and make certain that it doesn't slip their minds. Residence cards and college applications for seniors are handled through her office. All activity cards are brought to her and sorted before being returned to the registration teachers. The school problems of the female student body members fall inevitably on her shoulders. For her competent help and guidance, she deserves the thanks of the student body. This year Grant High acquired a new Vice- Principal. He is Kenneth A. Erickson, an ex-Grant student of the class of '35, He has fallen into the Ways of high school life again and has his new duties Well under control. At almost any hour of the day, his office is occupied by one or more boys who have been advised by their teachers to go down and see Mr. Erickson. He is in charge of countersigning all student-body checks and must okay any others which are cashed. ln his hours not spent straightening out the problems of Grant boys or excusing them for illness, he is busy With the executive council, Mr. Meek, or the members of the Dad's Club. Mr. Erickson has had an immense job to fill at Grant and is proving himself more than capable. T Left io right: Mrs, Abel, Miss Barley, Mrs. Summers PRINCIPAL The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty One will leave an imprint in the annals of the U. S. Grant High School of outstanding leadership and accomp- lishment. lt is all too easy to follow along traditional paths, but you, as a class, chose to travel unchartered roads. You have given serious considera- tion to the problems that have confronted the school and have been Willing to make decisions and- act upon them. You have used good judgment. In every sense you have been a credit to yourself and an asset to your school. This being so, I know l speak not only for myself but also for all your friends in both the student body and the faculty When I say that We have enjoyed our association with you and are sorry to see you leave. Our thoughts and best Wishes Will follow Wherever you may go. Colton Meek EXECUTIVE LONE MEAE Vice-Prezidsrxi Fa GEO R GE SHAW? Sem: ice Reprefafenzntwe Spring GIRLS' LEAGUE The Girl's League at Grant was founded in l926 and has been active since then in uniting in friendship every girl attending this school. The organization discriminates against no one, and every girl is eligible for active participation in all their events. Among their activities this year were the Chrysanthemum Show, with Queen Sally l reigning, the Mortar Board, the selection of the tall and spring Honor Girls, Hello Day, Cotton Day, the annual Big and Little Sister party, and monthly faculty teas. Their motto of Love, Honor, and Friendship is demonstrated in their many activities which include all the girls at Grant. l BOYS' LEAGUE Organized in 1947, the Boys' League's main purpose is to promote friendship and interest among the boys at Grant. The annual League assembly presenting various talent: noon movies, into which some found unusual Ways to be admitted Without paying the nominal fee of five cents: assisting in the financing of pictures of the Executive Council: and awarding the annual Boys' League trophy to the boys' club having the highest grade point, are just a few of the many events spon- sored hy the group. GENERAL COUNCIL F all President, Iohn Mifflin Secretary, Bob Inman ik' Spring President, Dennis Sheets Secretary, Pat Neubert The General Council functions much the same as the House of Representatives in Con- gress, and is a necessary link between the students and the Executive Council. Each regis- tration room at Grant elects a delegate to this council, called a room representative, to serve for one school term. The council, with self- elected officers, conducts school business, While each room representative reports the decisions of the council to his registration room. The room representatives also serve as collectors of money for student body card and other drives, thus performing an important school service. And upon going closer and opening the door he would see ten people hard at work-some drawing layouts, some Writing copy, and others pasting up pictures to be sent to the printer. This is the Memoirs staff. The members ot the staff spent a full school year preparing the annual. In this task they received invaluable aid from their advisor, Mr. Houde, and from Miss Krichesky, last year's ad- visor. The Work of the Memoirs staff is to publish a yearbook which Will be attractive, interesting to every student, and, in general, a real book of mem- ories. ga W., .,..,.,o.. , ,W 4 'I , Lg :M f - A ' ff 4 A5 A -izz V 1 . , f g f z A3 , fs? We students and our parents look for- ward to its fine Christmas and Easter programs. This year, Victor Herbert's popular operetta, Sweethearts was given by the Choral Department in con- junction With the Instrumental and Drama Departments. This, their most important activity of the year, was worked on by all the members ol the Choral Department from Ianuary until its presentation in May. Each of the seven units oi this de- partment elects officers Who guide the class functions and make up the Inter- Choral Council. This year, for the first CHCRAL DEPARTMENT time, the Chanters consists entirely of Freshman boys. The Freshman girls have their own glee club, under the guidance of Mrs. Chaney. The Choral Departments activities do not end in school, though. The larger groups sing for many organiza- tions at Christmas time and make trips to various hospitals. The smaller en- sembles irom the Choir sing constantly for gatherings of all kinds. All of these activities are under the energetic direction of Mrs. Iean Vancil, Whose groups are Well known in Port- land for their excellent showmanship. She rules the roost in 232 with friend- liness and efficiency. Chanters Officers Senior Choir Officers S W I N G S I X T E E N Orchestra INSTRUMENTAL The fine instrumental music produced in our assemblies is possible through the concen- trated effort of many Grant students in cooper- ation with Mr. Edward McDowell, head ot the Instrumental Department. Through the year we students work up spirit with rally sonqs Orchestra Officers from the band, or relax as the orchestra plays the refined music ot Kern, Gershwin, Mozart and other lesser known composers. The dance band does much to make our dances success- ful. The traininq band is a vital, it little pub- licized, unit ot the lnstrumental Department, Orchestra Class Band DEPARTMENT for in it many band members get experience tor the more advanced organizations. And what would a Santa Claus parade, Rose Fes- tival, or any other parade be without the Grant Hi marching band! Fiesta and the Harvest Festival also provide opportunities for the Instrumental Department to shine. These groups certainly add to the musical enjoyment of all Grantonians, and who knows, Mr. McDowell may be raising a famous musi- cian of the future in our very midst. Dance Band Some of Mrs. Hamiltozfs students at K.B.P.S. The Drama Department consists of the speech and drama students ot Miss Churchill, and the speech students oi Mrs. Hamilton and Miss Krichesky. These speech pupils concentrate on pro- nunciation, vocaliulary and general speech improvement. They put their training to use in panels, debates, and formal and informal speeches. They also compete in speech contests, appear on K.B.P.S. and participate in assemblies. If there is any dramo in an assembly, we know Miss Churchill and her students have had a - Q .ffl alt Memoirs A ssembl y hand in the program. This year, there is an advanced acting class which takes charge of the production of many assemblies, Room 112B is frequently in a state of confusion before cr big program, with everything from cornstalks to wigs scattered over the floor and burgundy furni- ture. But out of the chaos the traditionally fine programs arise, to the great enioyment of those at Grant and at other places where the Dramateurs perform. With their capable hostess, Miss Churchill, Room 112B and the Grant Dramaieurs form an active workshop which is open to visitors. 7' -- A Blue Room Renovation Waifing to g0 011 Repeat after me ol OI' Green River We look forward to assemblies at Grant, cmd we have enjoyed many this year. These assemblies didn't just happen, but were the results of careful planning, and interest in the enlightenment and enjoyment of the student body. Sorensen Phil at work The club system at Grant has undergone a tremendous change during the last two years. Outside clubs, which were never before recognized by the school, are now an active part of the school club system, though they continue to meet outside of school time and in private homes. All clubs have been required to file complete information on their members, meetings, and activities, and must have advisors present at all meetings. It has been the full-time job of Phil Sorensen, social and recreational advisor, to effect these changes while holding the affection of the students. He has done a commendable job. The club system introduced by Mr. Sorensen divides all clubs into one of three classifications. These are social clubs, service clubs, and interest clubs. Each classification has its own council, and each council sends delegates to the club cabinet, which is presided over by the student body vice-president. For the fall of 1950 a Club of the Term was chosen from each classification, these being Del-ta Delta, Social Club: Tri-Y, Service Club: and G. I., Interest Club. STATE CHAMPIONS Grant 38-Astoria 0 The Generals, playing one of their best games, won easily over the Fishermen on muddy Gyro Field in Astoria. To the cry of can those fish Grant rolled to six touch- downs, two made by the second string. Because of bad pass- ing conditions, the running attack carried the load. The line played a terrific game, opening huge holes for the backs and stopping the Fishermen cold. Grant's touchdowns were scored by Shaw, Zoelch, Baker, and Keller. Baker and Keller each scored a pair. Many supporters traveled by bus and car to cheer the team on to victory. Grant 7-Eugene 6 This game was a thrilling one which was deadlocked at half-time O to U. In the third quarter Shaw intercepted a pass on the Eugene 43 and ran it back to the 29. Holt took a handoff and threw a letthanded pass to Torson who made a sensational catch on the 5 yard line. On the next play Holt went over, and Shaw scored the try for point by running the left end. Eugene came right back to score a touchdown of their own, but it went for naught as they missed the extra point. Grant 12-Marshfield 'I ln the grand finale of the football season Grant Won its fifth state championship fsecorid consecutivel, downing the Marshfield Pirates. The Generals were never in trouble during the first half, scoring two touchdowns and stopping every Pirate threat. The Marshfield squad looked like a different team in the second halt. They stopped the Generals' attack and produced a touchdown of their own early in the fourth quarter on a long pass. From here on the Grant team hung on to their lead as Marshfield tried desperately to score again. Exley intercepted a pass to spoil their last chance. in, Dick Davenport, Hal Hai Grant 12-Klamath Falls 0 Grant's running attack. sparked by Dick Reneherq, led the Generals to a 12-U victory over the Pelicans of Klam- ath Falls, September 15 to open the football season. Although the Pelicans drove deep into Grant's territory several times, they could not cross the stubbornly defended goal line. This victory was the twelfth straight for the Generals, who were undefeated last year, winning eleven and taking the state championship. Holt shows that one leg is enouqh while Shaw and Davenport look on. A valiant try but the ball eludes Holt. Iohn Keller, halfback: Ruben Menashe, tackle: Bill Schuppel, guard: lerry Exley, quarterback. An unidentified Grant player brings down Crocker, the Benson haliback after a short gain. Grant 45-Franklin 6 The Grant Generals and the Franklin Quakers got the prep grid jarnboree off to a flying start with a game that looked like it might turn into the season's first upset. Franklin drew first blood, scoring early in the first quarter but missed the try for point. Grant came right back to score a touchdown of its own, and lim Torson's kick made it 7 to 6. The qame was continued on Frank- lin's new field the next day, and Grant proceeded to run away with the game by scoring five touchdowns. Grcmt 12-Benson 7 Grant's powerful Generals came from behind in the dying moments of the fourth quarter to win over the fighting Mechanics of Benson. A Benson recovered a fumble on Grant's first play ot the game and soon had seven points that loomed larger and larger as the game went on. Holt scored Grant's first six points late in the second quarter. In the third quar- ter Benson held, and it looked like Grant might see its first defeat in four- teen games. A drive starting on the Benson 49 hit paydirt and gave Grant a five-point victory. Smokey Overton. A host of Grant players close in on Ron Scales. the Lincoln hack. Grant 12-Washington 6 Rain, mud and the Colonials added up to a tough obstacle in the way of Grant's iourth victory of the year. The Generals overcame these hazards, how- ever, and won their only home game oi the year. This game saw George Shaw, in his third year on the varsity, score his first touchdown. This first quarter score gave Grant a six point lead which they never relinquished. Grant's second score came when Ron Pheister blocked a Washington punt and Hal Hargreaves fell on it behind the goal line. Washington scored on a 54 yard pass play. R Shaw slips an the Cleveland men close in. Grant 20-Ieiierson 6 Grant with a well balanced attack won an easier than expected victory over the Demos. The General's line consistently out- charged the Jeff forwards and time aiter time broke through to throw oppos- ing runners for- a loss. Add to this the fine running of Holt, Iaspers, and Iones and the passing of Shaw and you have the margin oi difference. Dick Davenport was Shaw's chief target, catching one touchdown pass and setting up the other two touch- downs, one on a 40 yard runback ot an intercepted pass. Ieff's only touchdown came on a 28 yard end run. Grant 31-Lincoln 12 With a smashing win over the Cardi- nals Grant kept their victory string intact and remained in a first place tie with Roosevelt tor the city champion- ship. After a scoreless first quarter Grant went to work and scored twice in the second, once in the third and twice again in the fourth quarter. Linco1n's two scores came on 50 and 70 yard runs by Ron Scales, speedy fullback for the Cards. This made Lin- coln the first team in two years to score more than one touchdown against Grant. I-bday stretches high but cannot quite reach the ball which landed in the waiting hands of a Ielt end. Dick Davenport. end: Don Holt, halt- back: lim Jones, fullback: George Shaw, quarterback. Shaw qa'ins, yarduge against Marsh- field. Grant 32-Roosevelt 0 Grant won the city championship again this year while Roosevelt was runner up for the second year in a row. The game was played before a crowd of eight thousand at Multnomah Stadium. The Generals playing heads up ball won easily. Both the defense and of- fense were outstanding. Davenport scored twice with Keller, Brattain, and Iones also crossing the enemy's goal line. Twice the Grant line, considered by many the best in the state. stopped the vaunted Roosevelt running attack after it had gained first downs inside the Grant four yard line. Grant 7-Cleveland 0 The lowly Indians almost derailed the Generals aiming for their second consecutive city championship. The scene of the battle was Cleve- land's home field where the rain was coming down in torrents and ci strong wind was blowing. The game's only score came early in the second quarter when Grant gained a first down on the Cleveland 22 yard line because ot pass interference. Four plays later Jones slithered into the end zone for the touchdown. After this neither team was able to score although Grant penetrated to the Indian's three yard line at one point, Exley makes a diving interception of a pass in the dying moments of the Roosevelt gums.
