ULYSSES S. GRANT HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS THE 1949 MEMOIRS NANCY HALLAOAY Editor LOIS WILLIAMSON Business Manager PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENT BODY PORTLAND, OREGON djkW o t (jo ten rudk- dou A- SC - Grant High School — leader in the field of secondary education . . . symbol of high ideals . . . watchword of idvancement and progress — to you the class of 1949 dedicates this issue of the Memoirs. A quarter of a luate has left your doors, your lessons and your guidance were deeply imbedded ne path of loyalty and perseverance and not lose sight of your precepts. — ULYSSES S. GRANT HIGH SCHOOL Twenty Jive years ago 662 pupils and 23 teachers entered the doors of Grant High School. They were the pioneers. They and their successors established traditions of leadership and scholarship that have given Grant its enviable reputation; traditions which vou the Class of 1949 have been privileged to share. During the course of these twenty-five years we have been living in a rapidly-changing world. Time and space have become meaningless. Energy beyond our wildest dreams lias been uncovered in the atom and revolutionary isms are shaking society. On the other hand, some things seem changeless. From that first day, down through the succeeding years, the students of Grant have recognized and held firmly to the inherent values that are to be found in the development of fine character, good leadership, and excellent scholarship. You, during the period you have spent in this school, have done vour best to support the qualities and values for which the school stands. s you go forth into broader fields, may it be your good fortune to find that the ideals, the understandings, and appreciations which were your heritage as a student of Grant High School, may likewise be the foundation of your success in the changing world vou you are about to enter. Service Representative NICK MARINEAU Grantonian Editor LOUISE ANDERSON (J HANTONIAN The Grantonian is Grant’s ambassador to the outer world. Through it others learn of the activities and achievements of students and from that formulate their opinions of the school. Therefore the duty of the paper is to publish only that which it deems beneficial to the upholding of the school’s reputation. By reading the newspaper students learn of pertinent events about the school. Little known facts as well as occurrences of general appeal are uncovered. To add to the value of the publication the articles are planned to further strengthen the bonds existing between the faculty and student body. Finally The Grantonian strives to distribute a paper pleasing to all who read it. Co-operation by pupils and staff members alike is required to attain this goal. Ml aU£ C H 0 R A L SWING SIXTEEN Under the supervision of Mrs. Jean Vancil, the Choral department is closely bound together through the Choral Council, a new organization composed of the presidents of all the choral groups. The department’s presentation of its annual Spring Show is an event to which all look forward. Another outstanding affair is the Christmas program which has always proved to be an inspirational pageant. I) E P Many engagements fill the calendar of the Grant High Choir. In the past year the group was invited to sing at the Junior First Citizens Banquet, where General Mark Clark was the guest speaker. They also took part in “Land of the Empire Builders.” In addition the choir sings for the Barnes and Veterans Hospitals each term. This year the Boys’ Octet will sing at the coronation of the Rose Festival Queen. GRANT VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM The Grant football team ended its 1948 season in fifth place with two wins, two losses, and three ties. Only four veterans—Chuck Oettinger, Al Hansen, Jerry Shaw, and Joe Bonawitz —faced Coach Ted Ogdahl when the season opened in September. The remainder of the squad consisted mainlv of juniors and sophomores who w ill probably be a major threat in the 1949 prep league race. In his first year of coaching at Grant, Gerald Frei, assistant coach, built up one of the strongest lines in the city. It showed great power against Jefferson, Cleveland, Lincoln, and Benson. The football season opened when the Generals defeated Klamath Falls by a score of 13-12 in a pre-season thriller. In their first league games the G-men tied Franklin 7-7, beat the Cleveland Indians 39-0, and then were overcome bv the Jefferson Democrats by a score of 13-0. Benson tied the Generals I f-14 in a rough battle, and the Roosevelt Roughriders handed the Blue and Gray their second defeat 20-7. The Generals, however, came rolling back to upset Lincoln 41-14. A 14-14 deadlock with Washington’s Colonials finished the season. Duane Siebert led the Generals’ scoring with 30 points, and Steve Croley led the city in the extra point department with a record of 10 points. Chuck Oettinger gained recognition for the second consecutive year on the first string all-city team. Jerry Shaw and Al Hansen were given second string honors, and Dale Duff, Steve Croley, Dean Pochert, and Ed Jarmen received honorable mention. SECOND STRING VARSITY TEAM IN T-FORM ATI ON George Hobbs. George Shaw, Bryan Roberts ami Jack Olson, Joe Bonawitz, Don Braman, Stan Blank, Fred Paul, Bill Webster, Don Day, and Dewey Keller. FIRST STRING VARSITY TEAM IN T-FORMATION Dale I)ufT, Ed Jarman, A1 Hansen, and Duane Siebert. Steve Croley, Stan Blank, Chuck Oettinger, Bill Turner, Bill Webster, Jerry Shaw, and Dale Brown. Dale Duff carries the hall around right end for six points. JUNIOR FOOTBALL Guided by the fine coaching ability of Art Westcott, the Grant Sergeants completed their football season in second place behind the Roosevelt juniors. With a record of five wins, one loss, and one tie, the junior G-Men were a hard team to hold back. The Sergeants overwhelmed the Franklin and Cleveland teams and then fell into a 7-7 deadlock with Jefferson to start the season. A victory over Benson heightened their spirits, but in the next game the boys lost a thriller to Roosevelt 18-6. Lincoln and Washington fell easily before the powerful Sergeants as the season ended. Grant’s junior basketball five were really on their toes this season winning thirteen games and losing only one to become the undisputed champions in their division. Led by Coach Art Westcott, the junior hoopsters were impregnable as thev rolled over their foes with spirit and ability. High point man Jerrv Kxley, speedy Johnny Keller, and Dick Reinhart, Dick Davenport, Tom Hampton, Harrv Johnson and many more sparked the team with their inexhaustible energy. Even after losing Don Ilolt and Dick Bartell to the varsitv, the juniors fought on losing only to Cleveland in their last game. GRANT VARSITY BASKETBALL Finishing their 1948-49 basketball season in third place with eight wins and six loses, the Grant Generals were the surprise team of the year. With only one regular from last vear facing him when the season began, Vern Hutts, new coach for the Blue and Gray, set out to build a team full of fight and spirit. He depended upon the fast break and a starting five made up of Joe Bonawitz at center, veteran Steve Croiey and Dewey Keller in forward positions, and Wade Hampton and Nick Marineau at the guard posts. In the first round of play the Generals defeated Benson 43-40, rolled over Lincoln 41-35, ami trounced Washington 36-25. Franklin handed the G-Men their first defeat by a score of 44-38. Jefferson’s Democrats stopped the Blue and Gray with a 62-43 beating, and Roosevelt’s Teddies showed their ability by a 39-36 win. The last game in the first round brought the Generals’ hopes up again as they bounced back to defeat Cleveland 66-49. As the second round began Grant nosed out Benson by a one point margin and then fell before the Lincoln Cardinals by a 47-36 score. The Generals downed Washington and Franklin in successive games and then were trampled by the Jeff-Men 70-41 and by the league leading Teds 75-52. A 56-54 win over Cleveland’s Indians ended the season in good spirits. Steve Croiey was selected for the all-city five, and Coach Butts was named Coach of the Year. With Nick Marineau, Jim Torson, Don Holt. George Shaw, and Jim Ferrell all returning next year, the Generals should prove a major threat in the prep league race.
