THE 1948 MEMOIRS marjean Gould Editor Richard McLaughlin Manager Published by the Senior Class Portland, Oregon Ulysses S. Grant High ULYSSES S. GRANT HIGH THE OPEN DOOR IS CLOSED The open door is closed. Yes, the open door to the office of Elizabeth Caldwell McGaw, where kindness, friendliness, love and cheerful advice reigned, has closed. After three years of more suffering than most individuals experience in a lifetime, Elizabeth McGaw, dean of girls at Grant high school, passed away on August 15, 1947. Shortly after Grant opened its doors, Elizabeth McGaw came as an English teacher, but it was not long before she was promoted to the rank of viceprincipal. In this position she devoted her life to the school and its students. She was a valued counselor and was admired, respected and loved by teachers and students alike for her warm and friendly personality and her keen wit. Many are the men and women of today who recall her with gratitude for the hours she devoted to their welfare. Dean McGaw lived a life of culture and refinement, for she loved the arts, the beautiful. It was not uncommon, after a stirring dramatic or musical presentation by the students, that the teacher responsible for the entertainment received a personal note of appreciation. However she was not unacquainted with grief. More than once she had comforted a lonely freshman, listened to the personal and domestic troubles of the unhappy and helped a delinquent girl in difficulty. During the last three years of her life Elizabeth McGaw endured great pain without complaint or ever revealing her plight to anyone. If anything, she seemed to attack her work more fiercely, scarcely ever missing a school day or neglecting her duties as a chaperone. When she finally resorted to the use of a cane, the dean poked fun at herself and blamed her condition on old age. The climax came on July 25, 1947, when, rising as usual to keep up her part in the daily routine of her home with her elderly parents, whose devotion to her and hers to them made their home an ideal one, she became faint with pain and in falling fractured her hip. She was immediately hospitalized and words of sympathy came pouring in from all over the country. Her last efforts were used to write “thank you” notes for gifts, and with her last breath she uttered, “Thank you for the roses” sent to her bedside by a senior class. So was written the last chapter in the life of Elizabeth Caldwell McGaw and the door was closed. Yes, the open door of Dean McGaw’s heart and soul was closed to her earthly companions. As the mortal door closed another was opening —a door a little higher up and a little harder for some people to reach, but not for Elizabeth McGaw whose spirit rose above all earthly things to stand before us a model of love, devotion and self-sacrifice. JACK LANDRUD Reprinted from Grantonian of September 12, 1947 ELIZABETH CALDWELL McGAW Office Staff: Ann Meyers, Helen Barley. June Otterson Senior Counselors: David Buchanan, Catherine Calouri ■jap :_ COLTON MEEK Principal You are about to leave this world that we call U. S. Grant for a far more complex one. Indeed natural, social, political, and economic sciences have become so inextricably mixed that the resultant civilization presents a most confusing pattern. Education for participation in this “Atomic World” is exacting. In order to succeed, one must be skillful, cooperative, creative, and energetic. One must have personal integrity and social wisdom. One must be adaptable. Innumerable positive qualities must be cultivated. Negative qualities may prove most destructive. You have devoted four years of your life to the acquisition of such an education. We the faculty of Grant High School have worked with you to the same end. Ever remember as you leave us that our best wishes accompany you. Your success is our success but it is far more—it is America’s success. . ANDERSON A. BAKER V. L. BARTELL R. BEATTY D. BUCHANAN C. G. Virginia Ames F A L L A N D S P R I N G WE, the students of Grant High School, having concluded that an active and democratic system of student government is the essence of a complete and progressive high school life, and realizing that true achievement is best attained through cooperation with each other, with the administration, and with all of our other associates, do hereby present this constitution as the supreme factor governing all of our activities. Since the faculty and the advisor are held directly responsible for the actions of this Student Body, it is expressly understood that in any functions of this government or in any questions that may arise pertaining to the interpretation of this constitution, the principal’s interpretation shall be final. We do hereby adopt this constitution with the firm belief and realization that high school students are quite capable of performing the functions of student government in a cooperative and democratic manner to the end that their school may be, both scholastically and socially, an institution of progress and achievement. TOM CHANDLER Treasurer, Student Body E X E C C U O T U I N V C E I L S GEORGE SCOVELL Athletic Representative ft Above, left to right: DICK McLAUGHLIN, Co-President of the newly-organized Boys’ League, STEVE CROLEY, Secretary, and JACK LANDRUD, Co-President. For many years there has been no organization for boys at Grant which did not limit its membership. The Boys’ League, active again for the first time in 20 years, has corrected this inconsistency in Grant’s democratic school system. There is no finer way of making new friends, learning good sportsmanship and citizenship, and just having fun than through participation in the intramural sports events, dances, parties, and programs sponsored by the Boys’ League. Our task would never have been completed had we not had the guidance and assistance of several who heretofore have received little recognition for their work. The willing supervision of Miss Libbie Krichesky was an indispensable asset as was the fine penmanship of Virginia Bond. Our deepest gratitude to both of you for your cooperation. THE STAFF VIRGINIA BOND Above Creative Writing: A critical discussion bv the class will follow Jean Herald’s reading of her manuscript. Below Shakespeare: Louise Moeser and Mike Haggerty present the balcony scene from “Romeo and Juliet,” Grant style. Above Manual Training: Skill of hand and imagination of design are basic requirements for Industrial Arts classes. Below Typing: This industrious typing class takes a timed writing under the watchful eyes of Mrs. Ruby Mishler. Above German: The students in this German class listen intently to Miss Elsa Von’s explanations. Below Mathematics: This student demonstrates the construction of an angle before an observing group of Geometry classmates. Above Clothing: The girls in this clothing class design and execute many clever, interesting, and practical garments. Below Nursery Aid: Working with small children gives added interest and experience to these Nursery Aid students. The library, though moderate in size, provides all reference material and periodicals necessary for the students’ needs. Helpful aid in research is willingly given by librarians, Miss Dorothy Johnson and Mrs. Anne Blosser. A masquerade? No. This is just a speech arts class showing the variety of characterization and attire presented in Marie Churchill’s dramatic productions. Jack Rivenburgh adds a vivid gesture to his speech arts recitation giving a dramatic effect. How easy it is to hope, plan, and visualize the coming years with a clear gaze, when one is a freshman. To the Freshman Class of ’47 the thought of being a member of the Senior Class of ’51 may seem distant and vague now, but it must also be seen as a goal to work for. To the members of the Freshman Class we offer encouragement and best wishes for a happy and successful high school career. REG 108 Row 1: V. Freel, D. Reinhart, G. Bales, B. Weaver, B. Engelhardt, A. The season started at Klamath Falls in a 20 20 deadlock. The only mishaps of the grid session came in the first and last games of the City League when Jefferson and Washington, respectively, were the conquerors by scores of 18 6 and 14 6. Some Covertmen were outstanding enough to be mentioned in the All-City selections. Pat Duff and Chuck Oettinger made the first string berths. Duff’s election for the second year was unanimous. The present Girls’ League stands as full proof of the kindliness and usefulness of her idea. It is a shining symbol of the devotion that Miss McGaw felt towards the girls she directed so lovingly. One of the finest opportunities for student advancement offered by the Girls’ League is its scholarship. The custom of presenting this scholarship has been in existence since 1930. The award of $50 is granted to aid an outstanding girl from the senior class, and to further her education. It is an honor for which any girl can strive; it is another proof of the adequacy of the Girls’ League. There can be no more democratic organization that the Grant Girls’ League, and the girls have fun participating in its wide-range program. The dances, the friendship week, the parties, and the beautiful candle-light ceremony honoring the officers are sources of inspiration to everyone and the girls cherish the Girls’ League as they do the memory of the courageous woman who believed in it. r 1 - RIENDSHI WFFK ' L nLLi A r HONOR GIRLS L A r 1 ‘ ANDLELIGE CEREMON' r L A Taking over the position of dean of girls and assistant vice-principal upon the passing of Elizabeth McGaw, Miss Mary Parounagian, former Latin teacher and councilor at Grant, has displayed remarkable ability in her executive capacity and in carrying on the standards of kindness and understanding so characteristic of her predecessor. Throughout the spring term she has shown herself to be a competent leader, a sincere worker for the welfare of the school, and an understanding advisor. HONOR GIRLS Carolyn Krengle, Joyce Knoll, Nanette Silverthorn. Dolores Rich, Gail Chapler, Lois Ann Peck It is to be the policy of the Memoirs from this time forth to devote one page to the school club or organization which best exhibits a democratic spirit of friendliness, and helpfulness. Sharing of group responsibilities and privileges among all members. 3. Cooperation with groups in other schools. 4. Sponsoring a speaker aimed at improving human relations. 5. Active correspondence with persons in other countries. 6. “Care gift to Ireland. 7. Solicited for the March of Dimes.
