May we gain strength and hope from the beauty which surrounds us. We shall then walk forward with courage, as did those first pioneer builders. With vision and determination they worked together to achieve this end. And yet they are lagging far behind in the program to reconvert their industrial and political machines to the pursuit of peace. Is it not a sad commentary on our civilization that the same people with the same characteristics and abilities who won the war, seem incapable of coping with the problems which have arisen as a result of that success? You, the members of the January Class of 1947, are in a sense unigue. You are the last January Class. You may mark the end of an era. And yet, like all the classes that have gone before, you are come to the end of your High School Days. You too are faced with reconversion. 6 As a member oi the student body of the U. S. Grant High School, you have learned with vision and determination to work together to achieve your objectives. You have repeatedly demonstrated this in your class, your club, and your team work. As you leave this great institution, may you take with you that which you have learned here. May you successfully apply it to the new problems that daily confront you. May your personal reconversion be short; may your future be long, pleasant, and prosperous. 7 V Assistant vice-principal, dean of girls—these are Miss Elizabeth McGaw’s official titles, but she is equally well known as friend and counselor of all. Combining experience and understanding, she has gained the respect and affection of all who have met her. As vice-principal, Mr. C. E. Scott has charge of school activities and'executive details as well as of boys' attendance and discipline. Well liked and respected, he performs his duty firmly and justly. Jr W By a 7-6 victory over the Hood River Blue Dragons, the Grant gridsters gave their fans a thrill-jammed spectacle of unyielding spirit, smart playing, and good football and annexed their second straight state football title and their third in four years. Every game on the Grant schedule was a thrilling battle during the 1946 season. Led by coach Joe Huston, the G-Men had pushed over the stubborn McMinnville crew in one of the season’s most exciting games to enter the state finals. During hie first year at Grant. Mentor Jos Huston's brilliant coaching led the Generals to the City end State Crown. At the beginning of the season, Coach Huston was greeted by only four veterans from last year’s campaign, but eventually a championship team was molded together. In the Portland circuit Grant’s big game came with Jefferson, however, the driving General crew outscored the Democrats by a 14 to 7 count. In other Portland Prep games the Blue and Gray tide rolled on, to reach the semi-finals undefeated. The rest is a legend by now, and the Grant gridmen are riding on the crest of a 20-game winning sthsak made over a 2-year period. JUNIOR FOOTBALL Under Johnny Lil Abner Lewis, the Grant Sergeants wound up their football season by holding down second place in the Portland Prep circuit for 1946. The Sergeants' record for the season consisted of 6 wins and 1 loss. The Roosevelt clash was the only blot, as the junior G-men came out on the short side of an 8-0 score. jl f.. TRACK Although the cross-country team did not have a completely successful season, several individual performances were of championship caliber. Consistently in the upper brackets was Dean Muckle, last year's sole letter earner who came in eleventh at the city meet. Don Corkum, a lanky lad, placed first against Jeff and usually was among the first Generals to finish. Lloyd Shippey won against Milwaukie and could be counted on to finish early. John Fisher got off to a late start but turned in a fine performance when he came in thirteenth among 120 in the state meet. You undoubtedly leave the halls of U. S. Grant with reluctance and mayhap trepidation. You may advance info the world with a backward glance toward happy hours spent here. This is quite natural, but ever remember that while success is built upon the experiences of the past, it comes oftenest to the person who with wisdom and foresight gazes into the future. As you step for the last time through the portals of this beloved school, it is our earnest hope and prayer that the lessons in living which you have experienced during your attendance here will be a firm foundation for your continued growth and prosperity. s v
