IVe dedicate ZJo tomorrow, we, the January class of 1945, dedicate this Memoirs—to the future, which we are building today—to the future, which belongs only to us, the youth, and to the hope that the time to come will bring lasting success for all. CLASS It may be said of your class, more than that of any class that has preceded you, that you are a product of the times. You have been called upon, in no uncertain way, to bridge the gap between school days” and Life. You have worked in the shops and the market place, you have bought bonds with your savings, you have given of your blood, you are serving your country on the battlefront. In a thousand different ways you have already entered into the work and struggle of this living world. Commencement, in your case, is a misnomer. Yet, we must not overlook the fact that you have done your work here as well. You have labored diligently in your classes, you have entered into sports, you have given the leadership so necessary in these trying times. In every way you have measured up to the best traditions of U. S. Grant High. Now, as you leave these halls forever, it is our sincere hope and prayer that those ideals and attitudes, those facts and figures, those loyalties and understandings which have constituted our contribution to you, may in the days to come give to you strength, courage, and wisdom. Colton Meek, Principal MISS McGAW The graciousness of Miss Elizabeth McGaw. Dean of Girls, is a true inspiration to her subordinates. Her devotion to the welfare of others is best displayed in her office where she presides as dispenser of advice, knowledge, and goodwill. Although she is most frequently identified by her work with the co-eds and the Girls' League, there is no Grant student who is not affected by Miss McGaw's activities. MR. SCOTT Mr. C. E. Scott, as vice-principal, fills one of the most difficult positions on the Grant faculty with energy, friendliness, and dignity. Aside from his duties as assistant to the principal, he guides the boys of Grant high school towards fine standards of conduct and scholarship. Mr. Scott ranks high among the numbers of public servants who place ideals above personal gain. Players like Walters, Davis, Stillwell, Neder, and Withers formed a nucleus for a powerful combination, which the brain behind the brawn, provided by Coach Jerry Lillie, convicted into baffling plays that kept the opposing teams seeing double all season long. The Generals in their well oiled T, piloted alternately by Gabriel and Hollabough, ran roughshod over all early opposition. Their first test came when the Bald Eagle and company traveled to Washington easily to defeat the Colonials, 13-2. Then in rapid fire order the mighty Blue and Gray tidal wave rolled over Jefferson 19-0, Franklin 26-13, Commerce 38-7, Benson 21-0, and Lincoln 21-0. From there on it looked as though the Grant eleven would have smooth sailing, with only the Roughriders of Roosevelt standing between the G-men and a repeat performance of last year’s city championship. It was here that Grant struck a snag. In a rough, hard fought game, the two teams battled it out amid the mud of the Multnomah stadium with the city championship hanging in the balance. Lady Luck frowned upon the Generals, and when the final whistle was blown, the score stood Roosevelt 6, Grant 0. Nevertheless, Grant finished in such a close second that only those six points separated them from a first place berth. With seven first and second string letter men returning and with a championship junior squad to draw from. Grant supporters are waiting for another chance in 1945. JUNIOR FOOTBALL Congratulations are in order for Grant high school's junior football team who walked away with its second straight city football title last fall. The entire student body is proud of them and their fine coach, Mr. James Torson, and grateful for upholding athletic standards of the school.
